As much as I respect and admire Caroline, and would be pleased to see her appointed, I absolutely agree with Elaine. We’re talking about a Senate seat, not a birthright.
Excuse me?? to any of you saying that Ms. Kennedy isn’t “qualified” for Senate work. If you lived here in New York City, as I do, you’d know of the unbelievable amount off work that Caroline Kennedy has done regarding education and on behalf of human rights. I FAR prefer the type who just get in there and get the work done (as she does) and don’t concern themselves with getting press coverage for everything they accomplish. The “bravada” politicians are ruining our country…a quiet, thoughtful person who actually gets things accomplished is a true rarity….as a New Yorker, I would gladly support Caroline Kennedy to represent our state in the Senate.
Susan, It is not unusual to see children follow their parents into the profession, albeit medicine, law, farming or building contracting. We have a rich history of sons and daughters of politicians following them into the family profession as well. If we don’t mention the others, why should it be called a birthright just because she is a Kennedy?

Diana, I don’t think I’m using the right words to state my opinion. By “birthright,” I’m referring to the opinions of those who, out of great reverence for the woman and her family, think Caroline is “entitled” to an appointment. At least, that’s what I’ve been reading from a lot of posters here. I simply don’t think a Senator should be appointed — Caroline or anyone else. I’d rather see it put to some sort of public vote. Another election would be costly and lengthy, I realize. But a senatorial appointment lacks public input, and that bothers me.
Truth, I would personally be delighted to see her in that position, but I don’t live in New York state and so it’s really not for me to say.
It would be a little unusual, as Caroline has had no prior legislative experience. But then, Hillary had no prior legislative experience, either. Some of the “Clinton” people are against Caroline, because she came out for Obama. I think Caroline is capable, and extremely intelligent, and I think she would be strong enough, although she doesn’t seem that “aggressive” - to some that may be a concern. But I like her just fine. I’d be happy to see her in that position.
Exactly my thoughts. She has been in the political arena from a academic perspective her entire career. And she has just as much legislative experience as Hillary Clinton did when she was elected.
Hi Lorraine,
Nice to see you, and read your thoughts.
Hope things are going well for you and your family, and that you all have a very pleasant holiday.
Best,
It seems that no one knows that Caroline Kennedy worked for Ted Kennedy in his Senate Office for over a year. I think that is pretty good legislative experience. Then she wrote a couple books on Constitutional law. Then she did a great deal of work to rescue the public schools in New York. The only experience she lacks is in running for office herself; we all know she has participated in numerous other campaigns of others.
You know, I have been reading about the Caroline ‘pros and cons’, all over the web, the past couple of days….and then I thought about my efforts of late, (since I lost practically everything in the stock market) to find employment, in attempt to understand what is, perhaps, ‘rationales’ that may be moot, in the long run.
I remember an interview last month, for a professional position that I wanted.
My resume was ‘outstanding’ they told me, when I was called for the interview—but when I got there, there were three people interviewing me—-one of whom would be the woman I would be reporting to. This woman pointed out in the interview, that although I had ‘paid experience’ in the field, and in the same sort of work, that I was being interviewed for—-I did not hold a DEGREE in that field…and therefore, was not REALLY qualified.
The woman who made that statement, is close to retirement—maybe a year or so. I am sure when she began her work, the ‘rules’ were different than they are today, as they should be. Shift happens!
What I found interesting regarding those who voted for change, is that here we have an opportunity to walk the talk, with Caroline Kennedy—and yet, we are insisting that she follow the rules that were defined years ago, before the call for change! The insistence that she is not ‘qualified’ because she did not climb the steps, in the proper order, is the same as someone telling me that although I may have performed every function of a particular job description, and although I have been responsible for positions ABOVE the one I was applying for—because my 3 degrees and all the certifications are not INTHEFIELD….you get my point.
The media loves to ‘remind’ people that Obama ran for office on the ‘change’ message, yet is putting a lot of the old Clinton folks in his cabinet, and are criticizing him for doing so, by asking the ‘HOW is that Change?’ question. Yet when someone who is NOT from the Clinton camp, and who ‘owes’ nothing to anyone, and has a diverse basket of qualifications, one of which is integrity———why is that a bad thing?
Patty, I agree with your assessment completely and feel that Caroline Kennedy is more qualified than most. And, unlike most, she has no ulterior motives other than to serve and help promote change which the majority should feel is necessary. With all that she has given back, I think she has earned his opportunity which on many occassions is given to the former senators family members, etc, then, she can run in two years and the people of NY can decide.
Through the years I’ve seen wives appointed, Sonny Bono’s wife, I’ve seen children, assistants and others. I’ve never seen their qualifications discussed other than whether they are loyal to the Party of the former office holder. They are often a place holder until the next election and some times they run themselves and do very well.
From what I’ve read recently she is a loyal Democrat and has worked hard in public service in the state and city of New York. Give her a shot.
Beverly, I thought the same thing. She is a lot more qualified than Sonny Bono’s wife or Sonny, for that matter. This would not be the first time family trees have served in national government. I don’t see what the big deal is with this one.
