KB - I commend your office for going green. However my previous law office charged so much for each photocpoy I believe it was a profit makeer for them. Plus the courts have tight controls over how documents can be submitted- maybe that would be a good place to put some pressure on them, too. I also wish home printers had a 2-sided button to press as standard to save paper (especially when printing out the long legal briefs and drafts for proof reading.)
We have to recycle and convert as much as we can into clean energy. Here in AZ we have more posted ‘Unhealthy Air’ days every year. Anyone with breathing problems is advised to stay inside. Now that really doesn’t make sense because unless you live in a hermetically sealed bubble…inside air and outside air are pretty much the same save for an air filter on your airconditioning unit. We go through this every year and as our population increases our air quality decreases. Do any of you remember the cult movie ‘Soilent (sp) Green?’ Everyone walked around wearing protective masks because the air was toxic, and the elderly were converted into dehydrated cookies that looked a lot like MRE’s. They were handed out every now and then as a protein supplement for the younger people. So much for the movie, but for something that came out in the late ‘60’s it sure speaks to the problems we are facing today. We all have to make an effort to recycle and choose green alternatives when we can. Otherwise, we’ll end up as green rye crisp and wearing protective masks. I’m stepping down off the soap box…who’s gonna take my place?
c a, my father was asthmatic and hooked on breathing. that’s why he decided to move to tombstone, arizona. mom says the air out there is getting worse and worse. she told me about a four inch rain: the raindrop pock marks on the ground were four inches apart. i guess you do have quite a few elders out there.
One of the first things I think we should do is ban all take out containers, coffee , cups, takeout , doggie bags and see how much less garbage we have. We now bring our canvas bags to the grocery stores, lets pack our own containers, too. At least make the containers more earth friendly.
I have one solution for the garbage bags left all over and piled up on the streets. It will cost but, it will work. The City should buy semi large medal garbage containers with the heavy lids. The garbage will be contained in bins, and nothing can get in, including the rats. I heard that this is what they do in Europe, and they do not have a rat problem.
As far as getting rid of it? Re-use everything you can. Recycle. Companies also need to be a part of the solution, and not part of the problem by package everything into bio-degradable substances.
Where I lived before, we had recycling pick-up at the curb for newspapers (paper); plastics; glass; aluminum; grass clippings and of course, our regular trash. That isn’t an option here, so I do my recycling at the nearest recycling center, which isn’t that close or convenient (gas expense). I’m told the city considers it too expensive to offer recycling pick-up. The yard clippings were turned into mulch which people could pick up at the dump. Some cities convert their trash into energy and I think all of that makes good sense. I use canvas bags for shopping when I can remember to take them out of the car, but almost everything is in packaging of some kind that isn’t recyclable like the styrofoam and plastic wrap. Now there would be some job opportunities to come up with alternative methods and in implementing them by clever entrepreneurs. Ladies, we need a spell checker on this site. I know I have spelling errors here.
Yes! Great topic and a place we might can begin to make a difference and really change the world.
If you are not familiar with it, may I suggest you check out Freecycle. It is an amazing zip code based website where people give things away. Their rules are simple; everything on the site must be free. What an incredible way to recycle things and get them in the hands of those who need them all for NO money. This is truly a win-win situation. http://www.freecycle.org/
Overpackaging frustrates the daylights out of me. Not only do we have excess plastic on everything, but pill bottles are three times the size necessary and stuffed with cotton. Surely a boy came up with that concept. I long for a company to stand up and show that less is truly more when it comes to packaging.
I take bags into the grocery store and buy in bulk as much as possible, but most stores will not allow containers brought from home. One day…
It won’t be too long til the plastic packaging monster is tamed (I hope). Since plastic is a petroleum product and the price of oil is out of this world, surely *someone* will get wise enough to put a stop to it.
Think before we make trash, recycle, recycle, recycle and then burn the rest for electricity! Love that idea!!!
The full blood black lab that is sitting at my feet came from Freecycle. The young couple that had her couldn’t take care of her health issues, and we got her just before she was to be put down. Makes me smile to have her to love, and she is certainly grateful.
Lily, What a great idea! I had never tried to reuse my own Rx bottles at my pharmacy. I’ll have to call them and find out. I have 9 monthly prescriptions and that adds up to a lot of plastic bottles. What a great idea! I do donate unused medication to my Dr who will distribute them to needy patients. thank you
