Hey ladies does anyone have any new ideas about conservation?

I think one of the best things we can all do is not go through the drive thru at any of the fast food or coffee places. Not only does it waste fuel, it puts all kinds of junk in our environemnt.

Go green rain barrels. Collect the rain water from your gutters to water your plants or wash your car. The rain barrels vary greatly in size, so there are many that will fit every need. They can be painted, too, so they’ll blend in with your landscape. This is just one of many sites to visit out there with how they work and how to easily make them: http://www.duluthstreams.org/stormwater/toolkit/rainbarrels.html or try this one: http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/Content/DEP/Rainscapes/barrels.htm

Well I am happy to say that I do them all. Have been washing and reusing plastic bags since a kid. My mom made us do it because once the house was overflowing with foster kids we conserved. I saw a foster sister from years ago and we were laughing about some of the things we were taught, and long before Sheryl Crow talked about conserving toilet paper, we were already doing that. I would say back in the 60’s. Composting as well, still do. There were so many kids and she had to keep costs down, and less visits from the plumber.

Ha! Never tried leaves, but growing up on a farm and having out houses, I remember having old Montgomery Wards catalogs, newspaper and phone books for tearing pages out of and using in lieu of toilet paper, which we sometimes had and bags of lime with a scoop for sprinkling down the hole. Scary place to go for a kid, always checking for spiders, wasps or other varmints. So greatful for indoor plumbing when we finally had it installed.

My grandma told me about using “Monkey Wards” catalogs as TP back in the day. It seems to me that a family would run out of pages before the next catalog would arrive …

Oh, that tickles me….no pun…I haven’t run across anybody who said Monkey Wards in a zillion years…..

Yes, I got that from my grandparents and my Depression Era parents. Pretty funny, I agree. The store no longer exists, am I right?

Yep…that would be the usual suspects…..Doubt that it exists…..have question, will google……I posted here on page two a link from Florence King…about pack rats/hoarding….and it was hard to get it typed in right because I don’t know how to cut and paste….yet……you might find it amusing in light of the comment about Depression era frugality…….Did your mom squirrel away two tablespoon leftovers in the fridge never to be seen again?

My dad’s the tightwad/squirreler. His refrigerator is a collection of tiny bits of food in plastic bags, which he never touches again. He keeps every lame promotional freebie giveaway (baseball hats, t-shirts, tote bags… all with logos and cheesy illustrations) that come his way, regardless if he has use for it. Always tries to pawn it off on me like it’s some gift. The other day, he tried to present me with a 20 year old blanket (he “no longer uses”) that had holes in it. I keep telling him, no thank you, no thank you, no thank you, we have plenty of blankets. He has plenty of money in the bank, no debt, his house and car are paid for, and yet he never gives gifts for birthdays and Christmas and always asks his neighbors to drive him to the airport instead of getting a taxi or shuttle. I keep reminding myself that he’s a product of his childhood, but that excuse wore thin many years ago. I mean, the guy’s been living a very comfortable life for the last 65 years. I keep reminding myself that there are more important things to focus on … (can you tell that it bugs the beejeezus out of me?) :-/

RE: Bugs the Beejeezus…..Yes. Yes I can see that! And that little guy is cute….. :-/ …… it must mean “yipes”…. Just for the hell of it, go to page two and scroll to my response to CA Rose about hoarding….it’s pretty funny as are the other linked articles under “misanthrope’s corner”….. I don’t think the traits manifest in your dad are necessarily generational….My forty something daughter-in-law, a bit of an heiress, has the heart and soul of a niddly little old hausfrau…..When she starts in on how much everything costs and how it’s getting worse…and…and….I can imagine and “hear” the click of that tiny coin purse clutched to her bosom….She didn’t get to be an heiress by being frugal…Her idea of frugality is cutting everybody’s brie en croute rations….I refer to her, out of earshot, as a “white glove welfare recipient” The issues of entitlement being so similar………….oops…can you tell….?…. :-/ !!

lol! It’s wierdly comforting to learn that this unwarranted frugality is a universal, cross-generational thing. And then there are the folks who are in debt up to their eyebrows and housepoor, but who buy ski boats and flatscreens and LV bags and gawdknowswhatelse because they can’t help themselves/deserve to treat themselves. What a world. Did you hear about the poor soul who got trampled to death at WalMart on Friday? And how upset the maurauding Walmart shoppers were because the manager closed the store and kicked them out due to the tragedy? What in the name of gawd would WalMart be selling that would cause people to trample another human being to get some?(“Save money. Live better.”) I’m sorry, but those people should be put to sleep, or at the very least, not allowed to breed. :-{
