I loved You Bet Your Life, because it was hosted by Groucho Marx. No matter what was going on, Groucho could always get a laugh out of me. And the game itself was a clever combination of chance and skill.
Other than that I like the games where you learn something, College Bowl, Jeopardy, Family Feud, Iron Chef.
I love the Japanese version of Iron Chef …. we did our own version here at my house like many family’s did!
We don’t get real TV anymore but I sure do/did love watching Iron Chef! GOODONE, EB!
For the record M won hands down on the Marshmallow Challenge! His recipe was marshmallows and Apple Jacks. ;)
When us grown ups ate his concoction we all felt like it was 1974 all over again …. there we were like a bunch of kids on Saturday morning glued to the boob tube watching School House Rock and Conjunction Junction.
Oh, you found me out, this is the reason I CRAVETOBEGRAMMARGIRL! :)
Hi Ki b
Iron Chef is a show on the Food Network which pits established, successful chefs against chef luminaries (Mario Batali, Bobby Flay, Cat Cora and others) in a unrehearsed one hour cook-off featuring a surprise main ingredient as the theme. If you’re into food at all, this show might be worth exploring.
PDP…with a great deal of poetic license.
Although it is a contest (battle?) of sorts, the only prize is bragging rights. Nevertheless, it is fun to watch.
Hi there Chef–––good to see you back here flipping the old burgers. Yes, I have watched that show and thought it nerve wracking as well as very entertaining. To be under that much pressure to produce something of edible excellence under the wire is a feat to behold. Chefs, to me,are a marvel. Charlie Rose featured that Korean chef from New York that’s all the buzz––can’t recall his name––did you happen to see it?
Thanks, Phyllis. Things have been too cantankerous here for me to get into recently, but can’t resist adding my two cents on anything culinary.
If you are referring to the asian chef on Iron Chef his name is Masaharu Morimoto. However, I believe the chef highlighted by Charlie Rose was David Chang, a much touted NY restauranteur.
Good to see you back Chef Zee. People come and people go, it’s always nice to see a familiar name.
Yes, there have been some cantankerous debating going on…………..
I wish everyone would abide by my Father’s house rule (when I was growing up)
Be passionate about your subject matter but don’t attack your opposing commenter. I love to exchange views but I’m uncomfortable when it resorts to name calling. Not that I don’t have a few choice words to mutter to myself when things get rough. I just remain Civil and don’t write them down.
Anyway……….welcome back!
Because it is very much a game. There is a surprise ingredient that all the chefs have to work into their meals. They have a time constraint. There are rules. There are winners and losers. More interesting to me than the Price is Right.
Thank you, Lily and Josie.
As long as the topic doesn’t require boxing gloves (which don’t fit well over my oven mitts) I’m in.
My motto, “Make dinner not war” keeps me from partaking in the frequent cat fights over many issues on WOWOWOW.
There are those of you I think are great however, so I stay tuned and hope for the chance to converse.
LOL Chef! Can you tell that you are missed! I think that should be a bumper sticker… Make Dinner Not War.
I’d probably get my car keyed for that one too.
Have never seen any of the shows listed in the poll.
But when we were little kids got to watch “College Bowl” [The Varsity Sport of the Mind] with our parents after bath and in PJs.
Got so into it would read Newsweek and Time (or as my mother referred to it “That Republican Rag.” Dad’s magazine) during the week cramming for the show. Also read the encyclopedia…because whenever got anything right would turn around and look at my Dad in ‘his’ chair (a wing chair with his dog sitting by it and his silver mug of tea on the side table)
His eyes would sparkle behind his glasses, and he’d smile with his pipe clinched between his teeth that made his dimples really deep. He was always very proud when we got something right so we all loved to try.
Amazing that first grader could know enough to answer a good percentage of questions. And that wasn’t a bit cowed by the idea that it was for college kids. But that was the grace of having a real president, JFK, who challenged us to do our best and had us all totally inspired to do go full out at everything.
We were in the President’s Council of Youth Fitness at school. Tried to get Dad to take us on 50-mile hikes (he did get all the neighborhood into touch football) and when he was going to watch Gunsmoke when Jackie’s WH tour Mom and I said no way.
Can’t think of College Bowl without thinking of Dad and JFK and Jackie….it was an era that was all of a piece.
Here’s Jackie’s famous Valentine’s Day 1962 WH Tour:
