You are going to Ireland? I bet you’ll do just fine with the transition as you are bright & sharp, but very hard as you said to be far from your kids. Cell phones and computer monitor with a camera — Oh, Happy Technology! I wish you the Best. Soon?

Well my 2 oldest are 26 and just turning 21, so I figure I can come back here to spend a month or 2 in the summers and we’ll get them over to Ireland as well. And as they get more settled in their own lives and careers it will be easier for them and me to spend time together too. It will be difficult but at the same time, so many adult children move to different states and with travel and communication what it is these days, moving to another country isn’t much different than to another state. We are thinking we will move in about a year.

We too were paying close to $15,000 a year for Blue Cross/Blue Shield for three of us through a company we retired with. The company recently changed medical carriers and my husband at this very moment is back “on the road” to earn enough hours of work to qualify for the new coverage and help pay for it. No longer retired-must pay for health insurance. I have read that huge percentage of medical costs are due “paperwork” for all the medical carriers. Stream-lining our system could be a means to lessening the costs.

Frannie Em - I agree with you. Here in New Jersey, Democrats have colluded with large insurance companies to keep smaller companies out, reducing competition. My alumni insurance is very affordable and would have covered my entire family, but NJ and NY do NOT allow it to be sold in their states. The corrupt government has “crowded out” the competition making insurance very expensive. Instead we have the state, welfare health care for our children: It is chaotic, unaccountable, and hands down the worst insurance I’ve ever had to deal with - and I used to process insurance for a living. There is no question that the people hired to administer these programs are from the bottom half of the bell curve. They had to be working somewhere. They’re in the government NJ health care system - that’s where. In the meantime the Canadian system is in complete meltdown, and their leaders are working towards a system more like the US. Name one thing that the government does better than any other company - The US government is not the best at anything.

Bella, I know, but something has to be done. Each party sees the answer differently. We cannot go on like this. If I had saved the money for insurance over the last 5 years, I would have almost $60,000 in savings for it, but since I have a precondition and if that problem came up again. $60,000 would barely cover it. We would be sunk so I have to keep the expensive insurance. I am coming on 7 years now and then I might be able to change my company. I don’t know if I could get it any cheaper. Many doctors have dropped their plans because they weren’t getting paid much. The plans were reimbursing them less than medicare. Go figure. We are the screwiest thinking country. There always seems to be a new way to do something that just puts it to the American people.

Wowowow, since you are asking, our insurance is a PPO with Blue Cross of California, which has now changed itself into Anthem. Probably to charge more for nothing.

I have been in healthcare hell for the past 10 years.

We buy our own insurance. I pay about $7,000 per year with a co-pay for each visit and procedure. Catastrophic limit of $2500 beyond the premium per year. I agree with Frannie that a government-run health care program is a bad idea. The American people would be gambling with their health care dollars by allowing Congress to have access and/or oversight of the dollars collected for the program. Congress would soon be “borrowing” from the Fund…..just as they have from the Social Security Trust Fund.

I agree with Bonnie. They have already clearly established that Congress cannot be trusted to keep their hands off Social Security Trust money. Its sitting full of government IOUs.

Right now I get it through my employer but in just one year, I will need to quit my job to do my clinical rotation to finish my degree. For 15 months I will be a full time student. I don’t know what I’ll do for health insurance and it is one of the concerns that keeps me awake at night. It is a frightening situation.

w G, Can’t you get health insurance as a student? My husband went back to college for his Masters in Architecture, although his original degrees were in aerospace and engineering, partly because he wanted the challenge of a new field (retired from serving as department head and fully-tenured professor at a State Univeristy-burned out) and largely for the student health insurance. Just as he got the degree, he turned 65, so he is now in Medicare and Social Security. Foxy guy, right? I on the other hand, have to buy it myself, from the proceeds of an extremely small and struggling small company. He felt while we were still married that I should exercise responsibility and pride of ownership and pay for my own, out of my company. Now health insurance is something I am wondering how much longer I can afford, too, and may either have to go without, or go on state funding. I understand and empathize with your fear. Please look into what benefits are available to students during your clinical rotation.

Prior to qualifying for Medicare, I purchased my own health insurance. Because of my age, it was a plan that provided minimum coverage for maximum cost. Co-pays and deductibles on everything. Being a relatively healthy person, the insurance company turned a profit on me.

My employer “provides” health insurance and it’s a pretty good program but only in that it’s available which translates to, we have group insurance so, presumably, the rates are better but it still costs me a giant chunk. When I see what it costs montly for my co-workers with children and spouses, I thank God again that I am single! I don’t know how American families are managing given the current economic climate in this country. I really don’t.

My husband was a federal government employee. I have Medicare and the Federal Employee Program Blue Cross/Blue Shield. The Medicare premiums are deducted from my ( own ) Social Security payments monthly and the Blue Cross premiums are deducted from my spousal Survivor Benefit retirement payment monthly. I am a retired widow.

For myself and my daughter I pay each paycheck, so twice a month, for medical I pay $121.00 so that is $242.00 a month and from what we have heard our new health care is going to be more expensive out of pocket and the rates will higher…so not sure if we will be switching to my fiance’s insurance or not but his open enrollment isnt until May so I would have to cover her and I until May when he can add us…It sucks b/c this year I have had some health issues and Thank GOD for co-pays but with this new coverage that is going out the window.
