Just a few words here from someone who is from Middle America, is middle class, educated and has had the opportunity to live in various parts of the country. First of all, who is Joe or Josephine Six Pack? If you are referring to the Midwest or to the middle class, you are in error. People in this country aren’t that easily pigeon-holed. I resent simplistic labels that show complete ignorance of the facts.
Another thing I wish would be taken into consideration is that there are many non-parents out here who pay taxes and vote and have many of the same fears and concerns as parents. It’s tiresome to be glossed over as though one doesn’t count unless one has children. I don’t have any issue with those who do have children, but, frankly, I don’t see how being a hockey mom has anything to do with one’s fitness for public office. While many serving in public office are parents, I don’t think that’s the primary qualification. The references during the debate (Biden)/soliloquy (Palin) to fearful parents while ignoring those who aren’t parents is just plain rude and insulting. We’re all citizens, all voters, all Americans.
As for the comments about Gov. Palin, if she can’t handle it, she should stay out of the fray. Everyone running for high office makes himself/herself a target for criticism, like it or not. Stating one’s opinion that Gov. Palin is inadequate to the task doesn’t mean I’m resentful of her or anyone else, nor does it mean I feel inadequate myself. It also doesn’t mean I’m bashing her. I’m stating my opinion that she is a poor choice and would be absolutely the worst possible choice for any high office but especially for one so crucial as the vice-presidency. I feel she would be a very poor representative of the U.S. on the world stage. If you feel that’s bashing, well, you’re entitled. But I have to wonder if you have a really good grasp of the issues. Her folksy ways, while obnoxious, are not the point. She has no substantial qualifications for the office she’s pursuing. I would prefer that Obama had a few more years in his current office but, in spite of that, I think he’s the best choice we have. He’s better educated, has more substantial experience, has the wisdom to team with those whose experience complements his and has maintained his curiosity about the world around him, always learning more. He has also run a cleaner campaign than McCain, so far, in my state. I’ve lost a lot of respect for McCain. He started by running on the issues and staying out of the muck. Between his choice of running mate and the lowering of his standards in many of his campaign ads, I just plain lost respect for him.
One last point - exactly what do you mean by “elitist?” I really don’t quite understand what you mean. Is it anyone with education? With a differing opinion? Of a different political persuasion? What makes Hollywood “elitist?” Or New York? Or any other place? I would really appreciate a definition.
hey Beth
so looking good—being active in life—having 5 children—a good marriage—-several college degrees——taking care of a disabled child (she could have aborted cause she knew before the baby was born)——working yourself up to city counsel——mayor—-govenor of your state is an embarasment? This makes her unintelligent? HOW? most of us wish we could accomplish 1/10 of what she has with her life!
Every woman in power has had to deal with these types of insults—but ”woman against woman???”Sorry that makes you the ”little woman” not her
She has balls and is fighting right now for mc cain and her party.
How anyone can say that is beyond me—this is NOT a weak woman by any means.Thats what scare people-her strength.
As far as Mc Cains wife being wealthy—what is your point? The kennedys-bush-clinton-obama—they are all millionaires/where have you been hiding?
She can’t fight and is stupid???Balin made 14 mistakes recalling how obama and mc cain voted on issues in the debate?
Being good looking is not an accomplishment, nor is being active in life. As far as I know, she has one college degree that took her quite a while and several schools to complete. There are many women in this country taking care of disabled or special needs children and, while I admire their hard work and perseverance, that doesn’t make anyone qualified for high national office, nor does having a good marriage have anything to with one’s qualifications for anything. Many women have had to face the hard choice to abort or not but that doesn’t make them ready to run for national office. I don’t begrudge her the accomplishments she’s made on a local level in positions that have no where near the challenges and complexities of the position she’s running for, even though there has been some discussion on how she attained those positions and what she has done since gaining them. What causes me to question her intelligence is the fact that she has repeatedly demonstrated that she has absolutely no basic understanding of the world outside of Alaska, its complexities, subtleties, problems, dangers. She doesn’t know what Hamas is, she doesn’t know what “Achilles heel” means (something I learned in fourth or fifth grade), she appears to be incapable of responding to a direct question with a well thought out answer. She looked like a puppet, mouthing someone else’s words during the debate. I really don’t think she has any clue in creation what she’s could be getting into. I also don’t want someone who’s fighting for McCain and her party. I want someone who will fight for all Americans and represent us with gravitas and wisdom, two characteristics that Palin not only lacks but probably doesn’t understand. Her strength frightens no one. Her ignorance and tunnel vision do that in spades.
If Biden (I believe Balin is a character in one of Tolkien’s books) made mistakes on how Obama and McCain voted on issues, please specify which issues and provide links or something so we can all check for ourselves.

A little refresher course………………
SARAHPALIN’S EXPERIENCE:
Don’t dismiss the fact that Sarah Palin is Commander of the Alaska National Guard— consider this.
Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It’s on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units.
As governor of Alaska , Palin is briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counter-terrorism. Her exposure to classified material may rival even Biden’s and certainly by far exceeds Obama’s.
She’s also the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security’s counter-terrorism plans.
Palin is privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to the entire country’s defense. Given Alaska ‘s proximity to Russia, she may also have security clearances we don’t even know about.
According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used to keeping secrets.
She can be entrusted with our national security, because she already is.
She does not have enough executive experience?
A simple analysis of the relative experience levels of Sarah Palin compared to either Democrat candidate puts this to rest. For over the past decade, Sarah Palin has been involved in executive decision making at increasing levels of elected positions of public trust. Obama has no executive experience, Biden has no executive experience. During that time, Palin left off running an actual private business in Alaska, a commercial fishing business, and was elected to her city council and then, in quick order, to be Mayor of her home town. She did so well there that she was ultimately elected to be Governor of the State of Alaska , managing 17,000 personnel and a 9-billion dollar budget. Obama and Biden have absolutely no comparable experience at all, neither of them.
As Governor, Sarah has helped devise and push through a project for the largest natural gas line in the history of the US …taking on entrenched politicians (on both sides of the aisle), lobby groups, and large corporations in the process. Her involvement with, and her understanding of, the Energy issue is unmatched by either Democrat candidate.
She represents, in fact, and in her own actions, what so many others (including Obama and the entrenched Biden) only talk about, and then go on with business as usual.
Obama, in his own actions and positions as a State Senator (voted merely ‘present’ so many time in the State Senate, but voted ‘no’ defending the Born Alive Abortion Protection Act there), in his own actions and positions as a US Senator (spent only 144 days on the job before beginning his campaign for the Presidency, but in those short days was recognized as the Senator with the furthest left record), and particularly in his own willful associations of long standing with hateful, racist individuals like Jeremiah Wright - and with the likes of Bill Ayers, the unrepentant, arrogant, and militantly anti-American political connection where Obama kicked off his own political career, who bombed the US Pentagon, the US Capitol, and NY City Police Headquarters, and then claimed in an interview published on 9/11 that his only regret was that he had not done enough. With such actions and such associations.Obama has proven that his change is precisely the type we do not want or need in Washington.
And this came from where? She still has shown no ability to function competently at national level. If she has all this defense experience, why has it not been played up by the McCain campaign? That suggests her experience in this area is insubstantial. Being briefed on something doesn’t mean she understands it. She stated, clearly and unambiguously, that she felt Alaska’s proximity to Russia and Canada qualified as foreign affairs experience. By that standard, I have better foreign experience because I’ve actually visited some other countries. If she’s supposedly so sharp, why does she keep making such stupid remarks in interviews and why does she talk in circles to the point she’s unintelligible? If she’s so smart, why has the McCain campaign kept her close and tried to control the media’s access to her and invested so much effort in coaching her? Could it be because she’s out of her depth? She has been the governor of a state with a population less than that of San Francisco and it’s possible that she has abused her power egregiously. Her political career started on the Wasilla city council with about 1000 people voting. (Her first term, she garnered 530 votes to her opponent’s 310, less than my high school’s race for student body president.) I question the quality of her executive experience.
Sorry but your rebuttal sounds too much like politically slanted hogwash. Obama’s association with Ayers has been vetted and the conclusion is that there was no close relationship, nor has Obama ever expressed any sympathy or agreement with Ayers actions and beliefs. They did not and do not “pal” around. As far as his pastor is concerned, there’s no evidence that Obama agrees or ever has agreed with Wright. While I would personally prefer to see more experience in Washington, Obama has over 20 years in various aspects of public service as well as a distinguished career in law. His experience is roughly similar to Lincoln’s and I believe he has the character and the critical traits needed for the presidency.
We can dismiss the fact that she is commander in chief of the Alaska National Guard - she never gave one order to them so that is meaningless. She has no control over the missle system, thank heavens. She managed to leave a small town with a very large debt and with very high taxes, neither of which they had before she took over. This maybe be a the type of change you want in Washington, It is not anything that I want.
Sorry to disappoint you all but………….Sarah clearly won! But thats OK! She will go on to prove that she really is a formitdable candidate. We must all keep in mind that we vote for the top of the ticket…………not for Sarah per say!!
You know , of course, that Obama has no authentic qualifations nor accomplisments for the position of the CEO of a large company, let alone the President of the United States of America. That he is the Democratic Nominee is shocking!!
It’s appalling to know that this man who has slandered the US Military who are fighting in Iraq, now wants to become the Commander In Chief of our Military! He has NO Experience,NO qualifications and No character. But he does have poor judgement and he speaks with forked tongue when he says”our
troops were raiding villages and killing civilians”!!
His running mate, Joe Biden, himself said that Obama was not qualified to be President. He also said that he would be honered to be on the same ticket with JOHNMCCAIN. Whats up with that?????
Obama has zero experience……….plus his greedy little fingers are covered in money from this whole Frannie Mae, Freddie Mac Fiasco. Take the time to Google ACORN, Google Community Reinvestment Account, Google William Ayers! I guess thats enough said for now!!
And while you’re “Googling”, you might also want to Google “Keating Five”, “Jobless Rate in 2008”, National Debt, Disappearing Middle Class, McCain’s Lobbyist Campaign Chief and How McCain’s Policies Match George Bush’s. Forget about Palin; she is a non-issue, and I mean that in every sense of the word. Her dim-bulb has already faded.
Yes, ACORN—check into that one alone. Only in the second Bailout Bomb did they remove Sen Obama’s former client nonprofit from the gravy train. The Annenberg Challenge also was aimed at radicalizing kids to march to the pols’ dummer—and Sen Obama was one of the pols. This man is in the Daley machine, Axelrod is a Daley man. We have been over this stuff so many times…so, so many times on this list. You don’t have to look into it, you don’t have to believe it…some of us are getting sick of typing it, though. You love Sen Biden so much—he plagiarized some speeches a while back, he is beholden to the credit card companies—are they a friend of the working man, as these people like to put it—admitting, in my opinion, that they don’t work!??
One of the PBS stations in my area had the biography of Huey Long on today — a Ken Burns Production, so you know it was good. Couldn’t help but recognize the similarities between 1935 and 2008. Long’s purpose, dream, tactics, personality, polarizing effect… the whole thing sounded as if could have come out of current politics. Amazing.
I agree—Sen Obama can get demogogue-y with his seals, pillars, logos, gearwear, slogans, man crushes, women crushes, slobbinerg press, and bellowing crowds. When all the dust settles, I wonder where he came from, how he got that 2004 speech in the first place, who is behind him or what countries, I don’t know. As I have said all along, there is something wrong there. I know that in itself is vague…but it really bugs me. If we find out too late, inauguration day will be Day I of the Opposition for me.
did you watch the debates???? right after they were over they had a list of all the mistakes—they live for that —it was Biden who had 14—-I guess I would check any national news web site sould point them out to you…..
