10 Things You May Not Know About Janet Napolitano

By The Staff at wowOwow

There’s been loads of talk that President-elect Obama is poised to pick Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as his secretary of Homeland Security, so we thought we’d do a bit of digging and find out more about this dynamic politician.

As we told you yesterday, Napolitano got her start helping Anita Hill pursue sexual harassment charges against Clarence Thomas, but there’s lots more to know about this 50-year-old. For example, she’s about to turn 51 — her birthday’s next week!

Here are ten other tidbits about the woman who may help secure our homeland.

1. Yes, being a governor takes poise and composure, but Napolitano’s known for her sense of humor. In fact, the governor is constantly cracking herself up with Monty Python quotes.

2. Like millions of other women, Napolitano surived a bout with breast cancer, and had a mastectomy in 2000, just three weeks before she addressed the 2000 Democratic National Convention.

3. In addition to letting off steam with jokes, Gov. Naplitano relaxes on long hikes and by river rafting. Her hobby has taken her all over the world, including to Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and the Himalayas.

4. Napolitano’s got the home-state love — she’s a die-hard fan of Arizona’s Diamondbacks baseball team.

5. The good governor shared a home with three men while studying law at the University of Virginia. The pals apparently love to play bridge.

6. As a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America, Napolitano no doubt lives by the group’s motto — "Be prepared" — which would come in handy if she heads Homeland Security.

7. Napolitano doesn’t just play politics — she plays the guitar. Well, she took lessons as a kid, at least, but we’re sure she kept some of the skills.

8. She loves junk food — something to which we can definitely relate.

9. Of all the places in the world, Napolitano would most like to see the Nile and Egypt’s ruins. She’s also interested in traveling to Jordan and Ephesus, an ancient city in Turkey.

10. And, finally, a fact we found intriguing: While in the Himalayas, Napolitano and some friends were trekking around Kashmir, where the governor encountered a wild dog, which bit her, thus sending her on a quest for a rabies shot. She finally found one after asking a rug merchant for assistance.

She sounds fun. And am i wrong on this or is she not openly gay? I think she is because I have super conservative relatives in Arizona who talk about it… of course she also might not be gay and they may just be stereotyping her for some reason…

The Rumors: “Napolitano, who has never been married or had children, has long been the subject of a whisper campaign about her sexuality, including some dirty campaign tricks in 2002 when ‘vote gay’ fliers were posted next to her campaign signs. She is not gay, she has said, ‘just a straight, single workaholic.’ ” —- The Arizona Republic, Sept 24, 2006

oh for cryin out loud… that figures… my relatives in AZ are very very conservative catholics and they don’t like dems. I thought she was openly gay as much as they talked about her being gay.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janet_Napolitano I heard an example of her sense of humor last night on All Things Considered. Said she could be governor, but the hardest job of all would be president of the Condo Association. I was impressed with the resume they gave in the introduction. She is very well prepared for this job. Did you all see her conversation with Charlie Rose last October? He was at table with her and, of all people, Sarah Palin. What a contrast! http://www.charlierose.com/view/interview/8736

Diana: Thank you so much for that link. Just finished watching–––funny thing––I remember the program and I remember Janet, but had no memory of Palin. Now I know why.

Her interview with Palin showed the difference between a governor who knows the issues and a governor who only knows one issue and had to bring all questions back to that one issue. Had Charlie not been gushing all over her, and had he done his homework on that Bridge to Nowhere, that could have been a more interesting interview with Palin. I loved the way Janet came across in that interview and I loved her education policies—nothing like the dictatorial elements of Michelle Rhee blaming the teachers and the union. She has a hard choice to make because if she leaves her office, the Republicans will once again control that state.

First off, anybody who quotes Monty Python is good with me. And that Charlie Rose interview was great. She had a point of view on all of the questions and good answers for most of them. When it came to Palin’s turn she answered by turning it back over to Napolitano or changing it back to her love of oil. I think she would do a great job but I am sure Arizona would miss her.

The governor of AZ is definitely one to watch. I am impressed with her.

I don’t know much about her yet, but I’m interested based on news reports I’ve heard about her and the few times I have seen her interviewed. Her sexual orientation doesn’t matter to me-that’s her business. I hope she can clean up some of the corruption in TSA. She certainly can’t do worse than Nosferatu whom she’s replacing.

11. She is in no way related to my favorite singer-songwriter-quintessential-artist-goddess, Johnette Napolitano.

I like her. She is really smart and capable. Although your introduction was fun, I guess I will have to do my homework to find out more about what she has done for the state of AZ. My sister lives there and is heavily involved working with the Veterans of the state. I understand she has a wonderful reputation regarding improving education, but I would like to know what her policy on the border is, and what is happening with drug traffickers on her border. Currently, there is a drug war in Mexico that has killed over 4000 men women and children in the last year as the drug dealers vie for power and also due to transporting them to the drug users in the United States. If we want to stop these deaths, maybe people would want to stop their drug usage and help end corruption in Mexico. Where does she stand on any of that? I know that the border is a federal problem, but it is a problem that has affected her state.

I do remember the Charlie Rose interview and I knew there would be greater things in store for Janet Napolitano. What an educated, funny articulate woman as well as a loss for AZ!

Janet Napolitano is serving her 2nd term as the Democrat governor of a red state,,which says a lot about how well she has served the state. She has been very vocal in expressing her opinions about border and immigration issues. She should be an excellent head of Homeland Security because of this very fact. The only problem for Arizona, if she leaves, is the fact that the Secretary of State, Jan Brewer, a Republican, would become the governor. She is very partisan and there is fear that she will drastically change the face of Arizona government and move it to the right, undoing much of the positive changes of the past 6 years.

I am so glad we will finally have someone sane and caring enough to handle real emergencies in our country. I hope one of the first things she does is change the danged name! Gawd, it reminds me of Hitler! Homeland, schmomeland! What is wrong with just having National Security Agency, instead of both? I do not know enough to state, however, it would seem to me to be redundant agencies. What really is the difference between National Security and Homeland Security? Except the slant in the names, of course.
