Fascinating list.

Hey My Alias, didn’t this list change? Also, didn’t the title change?

Did it? I didn’t notice Serena. Maybe it’s based on a statistical formula (like an Excel worksheet) that keeps updating as more users click onto the site.

Ahh. So for wOw to be a success it needs “readers” not “posters.” Suggested by you counting only the readers … very interesting. Also, by the topics in this list, it might be thought that wOw readers and posters are quite different types. Doubly interesting.

You know, I am very surprised NOT to see Miss Jane’s July 4th piece in this list. I know it had to fall into the “most read” category because it generated such wonderful discussions. Curious. Perhaps you are right rocky rocky.

Hi Serena. Any theories about why this — “Most Read” — thread disappeared from the front page? The ones that are here and then within hours are removed always intrigue me …

Hey rocky rocky. Yes, I do have a theory. Thanks for asking. I was thinking this—I have my own blog site (www.wiremonkeys.wordpress.com) and I can see the number of “hits” (or “views”) on my site, the hits on a particular page, or even the number of hits on a particular article or link. Now. All that these “hits” mean is that someone clicked a link somewhere to get to that point and the site registers a hit. However, even if I have 100 hits on one of my articles, I cannot say that 100 people actually READ the article. There is NO way of knowing whether or not someone has read anything on my site (as far as I know). Now. I think you can make a better assessment of how many actual READERS you have IF you look at the number of posts. More than likely, if someone posts, that probably means they also read whatever it is they are posting to. “Reader’s Digest” version: I can click every link on the wOw web site and still not have read a damn thing.

Oh, and I meant to say … my final point is this (which I’m sure you’ve already figured out): Having an article title such as “2008’s Most-Read wOw Stories” is both misleading and invalid.

Hmm. Okay. That makes sense—most hits, not most readers. That’s still an interesting statistic … Thanks, Serena.

Hey, rocky rocky, Wasn’t this post titled “2008’s Most-Read wOw Stories”? Not photo essays? As I copied it in one of my posts.

That’s strange. I believe you’re correct, Serena. I don’t remember seeing “Photo Essays” at all, and it’s something that would have gotten my attention. Though even my home page now uses this new title … ????

Ladeeees: Web 101. A note about photo essays. They’re the number one “content type” on websites as measured by traffic and page views (there must be a thousand photo essays on Martha!). They attract hundreds of thousands of brand new readers, and they add some good old fashioned fun to the site so we have a happy balance of stories that keeps everyone happy…both our beloved serious, politically-minded commenters as well as our beloved “please, just entertain me or show me something pretty - new - interesting” readers… Class dismissed~ *joking!* -Your trusty web slave, er, I mean Editor-in-Chief, Deborah

Excuse me Deborah, but it appears that someone has changed the title. It did read “2008’s Most-Read wOw Stories”—NOT photo essays.

Also, this list has been changed. These are not the stories that were originally here.

And one more comment—the original article for this “most read” blog was taken off the home page yesterday (29 December 2008). Now it has reappeared—complete with a new title and new photos instead of articles. I don’t appreciate the misrepresentation here.
