51-Year-Old Model Inès de la Fressange Returns to Runway

Fifty-one-year-old former model Inès de la Fressange returned to the runway this week in Paris, stealing the show at the Gaultier Spring/Summer 2009 haute couture collection.

Fressange made a name for herself in the 1980s when she became the first model to sign an exclusive contract with couture fashion house Chanel. The French beauty remained Karl Lagerfeld’s muse until a falling out in 1989. Post-runway, Fressange has remade herself as a businesswoman, designer and consultant for Jean-Paul Gaultier. This week, however, she stepped out from behind the scenes, bringing her joie de vivre to the fashion set during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.

Models “are not just 14-year-olds,” said Mr. Gaultier. “There are no [age] barriers to beauty.” We couldn’t agree more, and we applaud the design legend for proving this fact to the masses. Though Gaultier hasn’t always done right in our book (embroidered satin hoodie with embroidered tiger, anyone?), this time we’re wowed by his taste, style and class … and the collection wasn’t bad either!

Is this the start of Inès’s full-time runway return? It’s unlikely. “For me it was like a Sunday,” said Fressange. “This is not my job anymore.” Le sigh.

I know Sister mc. Beyond 50 is also pretty amazing on most women who haven’t abused their body or succumbed to a major illness. It’s a blessing to be an old woman- I’ve witness some embrace an emotional and spiritual renaissance. They have inspired me to not fear being old, but to anticipate a heightening of the senses and a calmness of purpose.

Inès de la Fressange is a beauty. The pic chosen for this article appears to be decades old which, if it is, is a shame because she is still quite a stunning woman.

Now let’s see. We are supposed to swoon with gratitude because some designer (who has never actually ‘known’ any woman in a Biblical sense) has deigned to allow a 51 year old woman to wear his clothing on a runway. Well, he’s right on one count: models are not all 14 years old. But most women try to hurry past 14 and get on with adult lives, with non-anorexic bodies and very complete minds. I prefer that, thank you. Sign me: Outgrew beauty and Grew Into Brains

How refreshing! To see clothes on very elongated tiny tots has always seemes silly to me…

This has nothing to do with swooning with gratitude for some male designer. It’s about celebrating the smile, grace and beauty of a woman who “remade herself as a businesswoman, designer and consultant for Jean-Paul Gaultier” and also decided to walk the runway. She is simply stunning, and that smile…wow!
