'60 Minutes': Foreign Oil and America (Video)

Lesley Stahl

This Sunday’s double-length segment on "60 Minutes" follows me to Saudi Arabia where I meet with the oil minister. You probably have two questions: First, did I have to wear a burqua? And second, are the Saudis trying to keep Americans addicted to fossil fuels? Watch this Sunday’s "60 Minutes" on CBS to find out.

Also on Sunday’s "60 Minutes," Morley Safer profiles art maven Julian Schnabel.

Thank you, Lesley. Incidentally, your interview last Sunday was excellent. I waved to you. ;-) You were remarkable thorough for your viewers yet full of admiration and compassion, and it certainly came through on that segment.

PS: I cared for the young Prince in Boston in the early 60s, and later his brothers (medically) — a most patient and understanding family. Later, at a Council on World Affairs luncheon in Texas I was part of the welcome table for the ambassador and he well-remembered that venture “with the sons… ” Fun. I hope the Saudis still hold us in high regard as they once did. (The burqua, or chador, isn’t all that bad - and it certainly keeps peering eyes away - plus women can shop unidentified [for the most part].)

Lesley, I’ll take a front row seat on Sunday. Such an important topic for all of us and our cousins around the globe. I know that I’ll harvest some important nuggets from your report. The Morley Safer piece will likely also prove to be interesting and enlightening - I’ll watch with anticipation as Morley parses out some of the human from the colossus. E

Lesley — Caught only the last few minutes of the your interview. Enough to be quite surprised at the contrast between the “compound” and the rest of the country, as well as at the sanguine attitude about how long they believe the U.S. and others will continue to depend on oil for gasoline. Did he say 20-30-40 more years? Who knows. Considering that our representatives mean to “loan” our big three auto manufacturers our tax money to continue to make the same old gas guzzlers, that prediction may be just too devastatingly true.
