'60 Minutes': Rex Lewis-Clack Is a Piano Prodigy … and Severely Mentally Disabled

Lesley Stahl

Watch the video below for a sneak peek at my upcoming Sunday report where I revisit with Rex Lewis-Clack, the young boy who, in spite of severe mental disabilities, can listen to a song once – once – and play it on the piano perfectly.

In a world in which Rex struggles constantly, music seems his only connection to normalcy. But how far can the music really take him?

"60 Minutes" airs on CBS Sunday at 7 PM ET/PT.

Thank You Lesley. What a gift of spirit this young man is. Congrads on how well 60 Minutes has been doing in the rating game! Also to 60 Minutes for the Obama interview. Looking forward to the program.

I love this story … can we talk to my little boy “M” … he can do math in his head … I mean four and five rows of numbers … add or subtract, divide or multiply … you got to see this boy … he is so smart …. he will tell you about artists and playwrites and … well, he is a savant … we are poor and I don’t know where he knows all this stuff but he does … he just does. I happen to know you ahve been doing these types of stories for many years now … is this a new angle on an old type of story? Will there be a new thread in this story? Just sayin’ or just askin’ … you must know the number of savants is through the roof on account of autism … these kids are genius kids … and I am a proud mother of a SAVANT! THE END

This was a remarkable program and thank you for the update on Rex. It is wonderful to see the progression of this savant boy as he has grown, in spite of the dismal promise of no development. He has gone much further than normal children who have no real interest in learning in a day of computers, text messaging - more. It will be interesting to see how he further develops past adolescence, and kudos to those who give their time working with these children. Leslie, I hope you further follow him, as he is such an exceptional person.

Dear Lesley, Many thanks for bringing us Rex during this Thanksgiving week. My own autistic son is 35 years old now and I always appreciate a reminder of what a joy he has been in our lives. We need to appreciate what it is and not what we want it to be. It brought tears to my eyes to watch the two of you play the piano at the end. It was hard to decide who had enjoyed it more - you or Rex……This was just what I needed to start my Thanksgiving week.

Hello! She follows these kids …. OMG … how innocent you are all are … she has done several stories about kids like this … it makes good copy. How about all the other savants in the world? … hmmmm, ? Yeah, I know; Karin, don’t be such a buz kill and whatnot! This kid is living well! … don’t cry for him … he gets all kinds of air play .. what about the ones that don’t? What about the autisic kids that go without a dad or grandma and what not? WE LIVE IN AN AUTISM WORLD … 1 in every 150 boys will have autism LOOK AROUND YOUR OWN HOOD … ten to one you got a SAVANT that ain’t got an AGENT TO BOOK GIGS FOR HIM … Do you know that autism kids are the real SAVANTS in a very ugly world and no one gives a hoot … the insurance companies deny treatments and everyday people shoot a mother ugly looks when a the boy has a “meltdown” in the checkout line at the store?! PPPIIISSHHH! Hey man, good for Rex, he ain’t goin’ without medical treatment or food. Les has done more than one story on this kid (we call this story BANK) … OH, PULL ON YOUR HEART SRTINGS just in time to make you all feel better for Thanksgiving Day … VERY PROUD OF YA’ …

60 minutes bleeds stories like this … EXAMPLE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqLzoiVzEY8 and then there this one … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmgbbFxQglg Watch the entire TEASE … you will see what I am talkin’ about … And then there is this …. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkDMaJ-wZmQ 60 minutes pimped this wonderful man out several years ago … I’m thinkin’ Bradley … not sure?! OK … then this one … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_GUPcg25QI&feature=related Yeah, I know, these stories make people like you all so thankful for thanksgiving …. YOU CAN BET LESLIE KNOWS HOW TO BLEED IN TIME FOR HOLIDAYS … Yeah, I’m bitter on account I got a savant kid … he is so friggin’ smart … the teachers at the public school want to put in a room with not verbal kids not with real kids and the moms at the store check out line, the look at me like I am scum and dirty and got some unruly dirty kid … and the insurance companies they deney treatmemts, my family tells me that I have HIV and i need to put my kid a state home or something … and his dad passed away from heart attact he was a good man working two jobs for the Carmelites and Villa St. Benedict and Benitictine University out of LISLE, IL. RIGHT, so we have beautiful little “M” with great savant like capabilities and no dad, sick mom and grandparents who think I should give him up to a state home … THE THING IS, you all got savants and autistic kids in your own “hoods” that go hungry and dont have agents and whatnot bleedin’ for ‘em. Do you want to CHANGE THE WORLD? …. good? Glad to hear it man. My advice to you is stop bleeding for a minute in a 60 minute hour and contact any autism group in your own home town. OK?! THE END! I might have CHANGED THE WORLD without all the Joni fanfare and big name bleeding … no offense Joni, sorry chickie. A girls got to what a girls got to do. As for my “M”, no, there is no pretty agents and grandparents, no just me … yep, just me … god help him. THE END

The poster, k d above your comment, Karin, also has an autistic son. Would it not help to connect with other parents who are in the same boat as you? Perhaps you have done this. I’m sorry to hear you are still having such a difficult time––it must be so hard. Just wanted to thank you, Leslie, for a well done piece which I watched last night. He’s quite a little cutie, isn’t he? The two of you playing piano was wonderful! What was interesting to me was the lack of emotional feelings in these children––and whether that could somehow be rewired––if that’s the correct terminology.
