'60 Minutes': When a Soldier Returns to War and Is Told She Lost Her Job (Video)

Lesley Stahl

Watch the video below for a sneak peek at my upcoming Sunday report where I interview a female Army Reserve nurse who returned from her two-year deployment and was shocked by what she was told by her employer.

"Your job is no more," her employer said. "You were gone for too long."

Don’t miss hearing her story, as well as learning about the regulations in place to protect soldiers once they return home.

"60 Minutes" airs on CBS Sunday at 7 PM ET/PT.

UNbelievable! My former husband was told the same thing on his return from his second tour in Nam……and there was nothing we could do about it, as the company claimed lower profits, and that they were in the process of doing lay-offs….but the VETERANS ADMINISTRATION?! At a time when our soliders most NEED the medical attention? Whoever is making these decisions shout be hung by their fingernails!

I don’t understand. If there is a law, they just break it? And then, is it up to the vet to take the employer to court? Will they be represented by an attorney from the military?

Hi Patty, This have been going on for a long time, it just did not happen. Althought here in Texas, When My Ex returned from Nam, he recieved his old job back, at a lower pay. When our sons reached the age to go into service, (the Gulf war) when they returnned they did not get their jobs back, I had two sons in the gulf war at the same time. The people that put their lives, in harms way do not get the respect, that the WWI or WW2 have. It seem to me that America think that is the only war that has been. They have never given the Nam, war heros the respect they should have been given, I’m not sure if the Veterans Administtration really care, unless someone show me different, I will continue to feel this way.

For some reason, perhaps my age is showing, I thought our military’s jobs had to be kept for them. I realize that has not been the case since “Nam”. Where I live, we have 2 vets who have returned and they cannot find a job, in a city that has virtually no unemployment problem. One signed up for a training program at a tech center, on a former air base, because he had to have some income to support his family (3 children, and spouse), plus both of their families are trying to help - they can’t even afford a place to live on their own. One has said that he suspects employers fear their being ill, or will miss work because of injuries, etc. As the “Church Lady” (SNL) used to say … It surprises me that in our “corporate culture” and the mentality floating around supporting war that this could possibly be allowed, especially in Tejas!

Thanks Leslie, we need more media exposure of these corporate rats.

WOW…My husband was lucky when he returned from Iraq, his company still had his job, yet he didnt get paid from that company when he was deployed, but there are some companies who still pay a portion of even 100% of their pay on top of their military pay & they hold a job, may not be the same one, but a job for when they return…I always thought companies had to hold a job for Military… I know my when my Boss spent 13 months in Iraq when he left he told us that our company, BofA, did not have to keep the same job but did have to offer him A job…Luckly his Boss held his job for him… That is really sad our Military Men/Woman are not treated better…

What is going to happen to all of the national guard, reservist, and regular military when Obama pull all of the troops out of Iraq within a year… they will either get thier jobs back, or like this nurse (nurses are in short supply!!!) are told that their position is filled, do they have sue? What about all of the people who are doing those jobs? are they out on the street- one way or another look for unemployment (homeless vets) and all of the awful things that happened after Vietnam to happen again —- we just never learn.

Welcome to the world of the military. It’s a shame this country talks supporting our troops. That’s all it is talk.

That has got to be illegal—the lady needs a lawyer.

Jo-the-Soldier” Obama could “use” her just like McCain’s using … must I repeat that stupid moniker? McCain’s policies with regard to the treatment of veterans is pretty dismal. Here’s an icon for the dems. And don’t tell me McCain wouldn’t use her himself if it lined up with his talking points.

So much for supportng the troops. Any one who dares speak out about the war is accused of not supporting the troops. Yet these same business people pull this sort of thing. Such hypocrits.

Watching the show tonight, I was glad to see that the nurse was able to get her job back. I do see where there would be problem holding some jobs like the chief of police that was shown. I can understand that a town can not be without a someone in that position for 2 years. And then how do you take it away from someone who has been doing it. It was strange - my husband and I were discussing it and he said well there is just one way to handle it and - at the same time - He said - the draft I said - end the war Just a little different way of looking at things
