AIG Spending Bailout Cash on PR?

Despite all evidence to the contrary, American International Group really does care about its public image.
The insurance giant, which recently received its fourth round of taxpayer bailout cash, has at least four public-relations firms on its payroll, breakingviews.com reports.
The firms include Kekst and Company, Sard Verbinnen & Co., Hill & Knowlton and Burson-Marsteller. The company also has its own in-house PR team. Specific services and costs were not disclosed.
Of course, it’s common for large corporations to retain PR firms in order to manage complex lines of communications with regulators, legislators and journalists, especially at a time of crisis. What’s less clear is how a group of high-profile spinsters allowed AIG’s top brass to look so bad.
Just weeks after crying poor to Congress and receiving its first $85 billion bailout, AIG executives blew $440,000 on a week-long corporate retreat at the upscale St. Regis Resort in Monarch Beach, CA. The company has since been scolded for another lavish junket in Phoenix, among other perks.
This week, AIG posted a $61.7 billion loss for the fourth quarter of 2008, the largest ever by a U.S. company. CEO Edward Liddy has blamed the company’s woes on former AIG boss Maurice "Hank" Greenberg. In response, Greenberg, who rejected a multimillion-dollar bonus last year but remains AIG’s biggest shareholder, is now suing his former employer for securities fraud.
Taxpayers, take heart — your money’s in good hands.

Steph: If he doesn’t give the members of congress money for their little pet projects he will have no support even from his own party.
Obama has clearly got to learn how the game is played, if that’s at all possible. I don’t envy him.
About the House’s $410 billion 2009 omnibus appropriations bill, Evan Bayh (D. from Indiana) says, The Senate should reject this bill. If we do not, President Barack Obama should veto it.
This was in an op-ed piece he wrote for the WSJ.
Check this out caj p, it’s a hoot:

Mel: …working on a bill to allow the President to scrap certain parts of a bill.
Excellent. But, he has to be fair about what gets vetoed. For every piece of Republican pork of a certain value, a Democratic one of equal value needs to be pulled. If he starts favoring his own party too much, it will be noticed. In reality, he should veto every piece of pork in the budget. Both he and McCain ran on the promise of No Earmarks. Only McCain is following through.
I hope Feingold and McCain are successful in passing their bill.
Lee H …All those bozos in congress were all pretty good folk at the beginning of their "womb to tomb" careers. After they got to "the big power city" and got a taste of greed —there was no turning back.
Just remember your own particular "bozo" from your area when it comes time to go to the polls. I know I plan to!
Talked to our banker today as my bank is a receipient of some…the TARP funds are not a giveaway 5% interest and if not paid back in 5 years the interest rate goes to 9%.
The good news….they renewed my line of credit. Rather than a secured asset loan it is a character loan!!! Hallajuha!!
Now it is imperative we recover from this mess…or we all lose!
No one wishes failure of this country….If we survice it is due to the will of the American people not Obama’s plan since none of that money will hit the streets for years if we recover he will pat himself on the back.
