Angela Merkel Calls Pope to Mend Fences Over Holocaust-Denying Bishop

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Pope Benedict XVI may have kissed and made up – figuratively speaking, of course.

Merkel and Benedict have been in a very public row after Benedict lifted the excommunication of British Bishop Richard Williamson, a Holocaust denier. That move didn’t go over well in Merkel’s Germany, and the Chancellor called on the Vatican to clarify its position on the Holocaust. The Vatican later did an about-face and ordered Williamson to recant his comments before returning to the Church.

Despite the public spat, Merkel and Benedict seem to have made up. They spoke on the phone over the weekend, upon Merkel’s request, and later issued a joint statement saying they had mended their fences. Merkel initiated the "good and constructive conversation" and it was characterized by "common deep concern about the perpetual warning of the Shoah for humanity." "Shoah" is a Hebrew word for the Holocaust.

Williamson is one of four bishops from the ultraconservative Society of St. Pius X whose excommunication was lifted by the Vatican last month. He apologized to Benedict for having stirred up trouble, but has not taken back his comments. He thinks only 200,000 to 300,000 Jews were killed during World War II – not the estimated six million, many of whom were gassed to death. The German weekly Der Spiegel reported that he has rejected a suggestion that he might visit the former Auschwitz death camp.

Considering how people view churches and religion he may have to watch his words and repeat his make up until this has lifted. I wonder why he feels there were less Jews killed than there actually were?

Why? Rabid anti-semitism comes to mind.

Yes I’m afraid your right. I was just hoping for a logical reason.

I agree Merrell, this man is an embarrassment to he human race. He’s just been fired from his seminary post in Argentina. The less young minds he encounters with his BS the better.

I think you got your wish. He can give all the lip service he wants, but that won’t change his thinking. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/feb/09/holocaust-bishop-richard-wil…

Exactly Di. He’s entrenched in his willful disregard of history.

On behalf of all Roman Catholics, dears, thank you for your insult to our spiritual leader. Any invective for Islam, Jews or Buddhists, just to spread things around a bit? The Pope DID require that the bishop recant his comments, and Chancellor Merkel DID describe their meeting as characterized by “common deep concern about the perpetual warning of the Shoah for humanity.” Does your faith not make any allowances for forgiveness of sins, my dears?

Does your faith not make any allowances for forgiveness…” Of course it does but for a singular lack of faith. And I never make allowances for stupidity, mine or anyone else’s.

is there any allowance in your faith to hold people responsible for their own wrong doings? Or because they are in charge their “humanity” should be forgiven no matter who is harmed in the process?

As a Roman Catholic, I did scratch my head a little when he first announced this guy coming back - I was happy the German Chancellor made the effort to step in (I’d like to know more about her actually) and talk to him and I am glad the Pope asked for this guy to recant. - I think this Pope, and this only my impression, unlike other Popes he is much more hands-on than his predecessor - before, the Pope was a big picture kind of guy, saving the world kind of thing, leaving the day to day work to others (and see how well they did) - where this Pope is much more into the daily operations at the Holy See because that’s what he did before becoming the Pope (which can also make you disconnected from your fold - anyone that’s been to the Basilica knows this - I mean, why would you ever leave?) - the problem with that is that he doesn’t have the Cardinal screening of issues, people, events and such that the Pope usually gets some benefit from so he is finding his way and he’s got a lot going on and I hope he travels more to see the Church in practice - it’ll be fine, the Church won’t fall apart in a day

As a former catholic, I’ll take John the 23rd any day over this new one—he’s too conservative for my tastes.

yes, in all honesty, John the 23rd really rocked - when they were choosing this latest Pope, i prayed they would choose a South or Central American just to shake things up - but alas, it’s not up to me…
