Angelina Jolie Breast-Feeding on Cover of W Magazine (Photo)

W Magazine

Gone are the days when women hide their breast pumps …

In a photograph cited as tasteful and appealing, the megastar of Clint Eastwood’s film "Changeling" is posing on the cover of the November issue of W magazineapparently breast-feeding one of her newborn twins. Angelina Jolie, 33, gave birth to twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline in July with her partner Brad Pitt. The cover displays a black-and-white photograph of Jolie relaxed and smiling in a sleeveless shirt. Her left breast is exposed and partially covered by a hand so tiny that it could only belong to that of a baby. The cover headline promises exclusive "private photos" of the A-list couple. The November issue hits newsstands nationwide October 21.

The world’s oldest breast-feeding support organization is applauding Jolie for being photographed while seemingly nursing — for it may help to break down stereotypes.

"I think we do need more role models like Angelina Jolie willing to be photographed and say, ‘Hey look, it can be done, it oughta’ be done,’" said the spokesperwoman for La Leche League International, Jane Crouse, to the Associated Press.

I am trying so hard not to like the Pitt/Jolie duo. For the most part it is a gag-me-thing, but she scored with me this time! So, is that upper lip of hers for real….please!

Breast feeding is the most natural act and has been around forever. Why do we EVER have to be offended by that? For heaven’ s sake . I do not understand why it is even an issue in a magazine. Are we that prudish?? Are we in the Victorian age? Someone said that they are offended by a public showing of breast. My heavens, look at any magazine and the new fashions, look at red carpet happenings. The boobs are falling out everywhere, they are no longer a mystery , neither are they real for the most part. If I was a prude I would be offended by that display. However breast feeding is natural, if you were lucky then your mother gave you her milk.

Well, urination, defecation and copulation are also the most natural acts and have been around forever. Do you feel those activities should also be done publicly? Just because “boobs” are falling out all over the red carpet doesn’t mean it’s acceptable or less offensive to many. If a woman can show her breast publicly, shouldn’t a man be able to show his penis publicly? After all, it’s perfectly natural and been around forever. When my mother gave me her milk, she did so discreetly and privately.

I hate to remind you Sylvia that urination etc…as you mentioned are considered normal in many parts of the world. We , just want everything nice and neat and behind closed doors.

I didn’t say it was not normal but it isn’t acceptable in our culture to do it publicly.

Um, what culture is that? Breastfeeding is acceptable but the prudes beg to differ. It’s something they need to get over…

I was responding the the remark just before regarding urination, not breast feeding. As far as I know, public urination is still unacceptable in this culture.

Gee whillikers, folks. A picture of a young mother breast-feeding her infant(s). So, what else is new? I just think if you are going to feed in public, just discreetly cover the breast, and don’t make a production of it…. In the mountains of Appalachia, they never did stop nursing in public.

What amuses me is when people say “you should go nurse that baby in the bathroom” Well, how would YOU like to eat your lunch in the bathroom?

Until recently I felt mother’s should be able to breastfeed in public discreetly. However, my husband and I were lunching downtown in an upbeat cafe when a young family sat beside us. Just as our lunch was served the mother whipped out an apron put the infant under it and proceeded to breastfeed. I’m not sure why but I found it distasteful and it made me uncomfortable. I don’t think of myself as prudish and I don’ think she should have necessarily gone to the restroom but perhaps an indiscreet table away from the general dining guests. I applaud mothers who breastfeed, I did not. I can’t imagine a more complete bonding experience, but I just found it distasteful while I was eating.

I wonder if Angelina Jolie is just flat out TIRED of being photographed. If I were her I’d be so averse to cameras i’d probably have convulsions every time i saw one!

Breastfeeding is absolutely a most wonderful and natural form of a mother feeding and bonding with the child, But, Sylvia, is also 100% correct in her assertation of the situation. I too agree with Slyvia, as I also believe it is a personal thing that a woman does for her child and should not become a public spectacle as it does involve the use of a bodily part, that would otherwise, under the laws of this country be deemed, not appropiate for exposure. Slyvia never stated that women should not breastfeed in public, rather she stated that decorum and discression should be used. I also do not have a problem with any woman breastfeeding in public as this can be done by drapping something over you, in order to conceal the fact that your breast is exposed, and has nothing to do with the fact that a woman is breastfeeding her child. I do not particularly care to see a womans breast exposed for the namesake of feeding her child, she has my blessing to feed the child, I just do not need to see her breast exposed, all the while she is doing so.
