Judge, Please Pity Raffaello Follieri; He Became 'Intoxicated' by the Lavish Lifestyle

Anne Hathaway’s ex seems to seek pity from the judge with this latest defense.
Raffaello Follieri — who weaseled investors out of millions by saying he could buy them cheap land owned by the Catholic Church because he was friends with the Vatican — is defending his actions. In a statement written by his lawyer, Flora Edwards, Follieri became "intoxicated" by the lavish lifestyle of being an A-lister and, consequently, to keep up with the Joneses, made a "colossal error in judgement," the Associated Press reported.
Past reports spoke of Follieri and Hathaway living a glamorous lifestyle — with a $37,000-a-month Manhattan pad, expensive antiques, jewelry, artwork and vacations.
Follieri’s lawyer also asked for leniency in sentencing because his client’s mother’s health is deteriorating, according to the AP.
Follieri, 30, is scheduled for sentencing October 23. Last month, he pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. He is facing up to five years and three months in jail for wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.
