From Roseanne's 'Nazi' Israel to Gas-Happy Protesters, Arab-Israeli Conflict Sparks Strong Sentiment

Pro-Palestinian protester in Florida shouts 'go back to the oven'

From the crass comedienne Roseanne Barr blasting Israel as a "Nazi state" to pro-Palestinian protesters in Florida screaming to "go back to the oven" – is the Arab-Israeli conflict sparking strong emotions that are crossing a line between expressing legitimate disapproval of Israel’s war tactics and deep-routed anti-Semitism?

Today, the New York Post points out the recent anti-Israel rants from Barr, who is Jewish. The Post writes:

Roseanne Barr is on the side of the Palestinians in the conflict in the Gaza Strip. "Israel is a NAZI state," she blogged with capital letters on her website. And on her January 6 talk show on radio station KCAA-AM in San Bernardino, CA, she blasted conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg’s "right-wing Israel uber alles crap." Roseanne, who is Jewish, also denounced "warmongering American rabbis … who are enriching themselves on weapon sales." She said that pro-Israel Christian evangelicals believe, "The faster every Jew in Israel dies, the faster the evangelicals mistakenly believe that their idea of Jesus will return." At one point she proclaimed, "I hate everybody, I hope the whole world blows itself up!" She ended her show with her own peace plan: "Israel has enough money to pay each and every Palestinian to not shoot at them." But 33 seconds later she had moved on, saying, "I gotta lose some weight, my hips ache."

Saying "I hope the whole world blows itself up!" and then "I gotta lose some weight" in the same segment just shows how she shouldn’t be taken seriously. The latest statistics also sparked more rage in Barr, who blogged that more Israelis should die to be punished for their crime. You can tell she means business because she’s used all capital letters:

THE TORAH TOLD US AN EYE FOR AN EYE, BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE GETTING KILLED FOR STEALING BREAD. THE TORAH TOLD US THAT THE PUNISHMENT MUST FIT THE CRIME OR IT IS IMMORAL!! AN EYE FOR AN EYE WOULD MEAN TEN DEAD PALESTINIANS, NOT 688. JEWS SPEAK OUT AGAINST ISRAELI AGGRESSION AND OCCUPATION AND WAR MONGERINGTHIS IS HOW WE CAN SAVE ISRAEL!!!!

If you think Barr’s remarks are inflammatory, take a look at what some Floridian protesters had to say last week: the Jews should "go back to the oven."

Fox reports:

Separated by battle lines and a stream of rush-hour traffic outside a federal courthouse last week, at least 200 pro-Palestinian demonstrators faced off against a smaller crowd of Israel supporters. Most of the chants were run-of-the-mill; men and women waving Palestinian flags called Israel’s invasion of Gaza a "crime," while the pro-Israel group carried signs calling the Hamas-run territory a "terror state." But as the protest continued and crowds grew, one woman in a hijab began to shout curses and slurs that shocked Jewish activists in the city, which has a sizable Jewish population. "Go back to the oven," she shouted, calling for the counter-protesters to die in the manner that the Nazis used to exterminate Jews during the Holocaust. "You need a big oven, that’s what you need," she yelled.

Fox News asked their readers if they think the protestors crossed a line. When protesters are screaming for the extermination of the Jews in the same manner as used by the Nazis during the Holocaust — it’s safe to say yes, it’s anti-Semitic.

According to the most recent statistics, the Israeli military operation in Gaza has killed at least 680 people and wounded more than 3,000 since its launch, Palestinian medical sources said Wednesday. And tragically, nearly a third of the deaths — 30 percent — are women and children, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, citing statistics released Tuesday by the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The number of innocent victims is alarming, yes, but let’s all take a deep breath and think about things logically. We all hope for peace in the Middle East and our prayers are with the fallen. But let’s all not forget our history.

There is nothing productive in this kind of talk. I suppose the truth in it is that it shows how angry and frustrated people are, because let’s face it children are being killed in their homes and schools and that, rightly, brings out the passionate voices. But these sort of inflammatory statements won’t help the situation especially when they are coming from American comediennes. We must watch our words better.

You know…people say things because they are upset about a situation. Any person who has been in a fight with their spouse knows this… Instead of attacking the perosn who is frustrated and shouting, why not stand back and ask WHY they are shouting, emoting, and so passionate about their anger? There just might be an answer that goes beyond words… I am not defending Roseanne Barr, nor am I defending the Palestinians, nor Hamas, nor will anyone defend my position and my thinking, on everything I say or believe. But when I step back and detach from the emotion in her words, It is very obvious that ‘something’ , is frustrating a lot of people. Could it be that innocent people, children, women, are being killed? Just because they were born into a certain society? ‘Innocents’ in the very basic meaning of the word? And why, just because they were born, should they be mere ‘collateral damage’ to make a point? In my lifetime, I have known 3 people who were victims of the Nazi’s….fear is the deepest and motivating emotion that is embedded in their every day awareness, when it comes to world politics…My Polish friend, panicked when the German Wall went down. We were sitting in a French Bakery when it happened. She remembered her aunt, who had been tortured, and was afraid that with the wall down, Germany would become strong again, and torture Polish people, again….irrational? perhaps, you might say…but true for her at that time……how could I have control of any assurance that it would never happen again? Yet, had I told her she had no right to her fear, I could have made things worse for her psyche. Address the fear….not the words……maybe something can change.

The problem with the words, is that they allow the media, and Israel, to deflect attention away from the real issue at hand.

Ok I am in no way saying this is right or wrong…but are we for sure that Hamas is not killing their own and blaming Israel? I mean Hamas are Terrorists or Terrorist run so anything is possible? Why are we so quick to believe everything we read? Again I am not saying that what Israel is doing is right by bombing schools b/c they did admit to that but again the 30% may not all be from Israel? DeB, again we agree on something…these words are not needed to settle this. I truly can’t believe someone would say “we need a big oven”…

You mean all those Israeli bombs are missing people and Hamas is killing their own? That doesn’t sound likely.

Hardy, you need to do some reading—these casualties are well-documented by on the ground observers like Dr Mads Gilbert I referred to below. Israel is doing the attacking with horrendous weapons.

This is according to Dr Mads Gilbert of a Norwegian triage medical team currently in Gaza: Israel is using White Phosphorus weapons which essentially burn to the bone and they are using DIME weapons, Dense Inert Metal Explosives, which tear a person to shreds and if you survive may even cause cancer. These are in direct contravention of the Geneva Convention of which Israel is a signatory. UN schools have been targeted and children killed. This is a war of attrition on the Gazan people, not just Hamas. TheGazans are in Gaza because of the 1947-49 war of attrition waged by Israel against Palestinian Arabs in which hundreds of thousands lost their homes and livelihoods, homes that had been in their families for generations. Israel has interdicted Gaza for over 2 years barely allowing food and fuel supplies to enter. Israel needs to stop its incursion now. It also needs to target Hamas fighters not the civilian population which it is doing. Half starved children were found in a house in house with adult dead and Israeli soldiers attempted to stop ambulance crews from entering to get these kids. The ambulance crews went ahead and got these children out. This is unconscionable behaviour by the Israelis by any name.

At the time of the partition yes the jews only numbered about 600k and the Arabs twice that number—but who had the weapons, Merrell—the Israelis. And he who has the fire power can damn well do what he wants and that is exactly what the jews did between 47-49. Also there are revisionist historians, Israeli BTW, who have written about the ‘myths’ of the war for independence of Israel: Bennie Morris is one that come to mind—He’s written articles in the MY Times and has also books out on the subject. The Arabs now in the Gaza strip and in the refugee camps in Lebanon are exactly the descendants of those Palestinian arabs who were forcibly evicted from their homes by the Israelis in 48. Israel is as culpable as the Arab states in keeping these people in those camps and using them as cannon fodder and political tools for Syria’s and Iran’s and Israel’s own ends. I have no truck with Hamas—they’re a major part of the Muslim Brotherhood whom I think we can safely say are major terrorist players. What concerns me is the amount and type of weapons that Israel is currently using, supplied by us. Thus we are de facto major players and suppliers in the on-going 100 yrs war. As long as we continue to supply Israel, this war is going to continue ad infinitum.

Frank, I agree the weapons Israel is using is just WRONG…Most dont deserve that…What I suggested above was just that a suggestion. It didnt come from lack of reading or listening to what “experts” are saying. Hamas attacked Israel and Israel is fighting back and them some…War or fighting is not fair and one side feels it has to win at all costs and use whatever force available. Do I think its right, HECK no, nothing like this ever is right. So would you say it is ok for Hamas to attack Israel and just b/c Israel has bigger and better bombs they shouldnt use them? I know its wrong to bomb schools and I never said that killing children is right…Lord when I hear of schools being bombed I think about my daughter and firends children in school and I just can’t imagine what those parents are going through. Its wrong to hurt Innocent Children who should not have to answer for their parents wrongs. This whole thing is just awful.

By the way—Roseanne saying that just makes a total ass of herself.

The legality of using these US supplied weapons needs to be called into question too: The war on Gaza violates U.S. law. The Human Rights and Security Assistance Act mandates that the United States cease all military aid to Israel, which has engaged in a consistent pattern of gross violations of internationally recognized human rights. The Arms Export Control Act prohibits U.S. weapons from being used for any purpose other than inside the borders of a country for self-defense. Targeting schools, police stations and television broadcast centers is not self-defense.

The US needs to get in there and do our best to put a stop to this… not that our hands don’t have blood on them too, but enough is enough.

And now the UN is suspending humanitarian aid shipments to Gaza because of Israel’s targeting of UN aid workers and structures such as schools: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/08/AR200901 This just goes from bad to worse. What the hell does Israel think it’s doing by allowing this to happen? They already are risking the censure of the world for their bellicose policies, and now this happening.
