Aussie Politician Wins 'Sexist of the Year' Award
It’s official — Australian mayor John Malony has been named his nation’s sexist of the year.
Malony outraged women this summer when he requested that "ugly ducklings" move to his mining town of Mount Isa to replenish the area’s female population. "With five blokes to every girl, may I suggest that beauty-disadvantaged women should proceed to Mount Isa," said the mayor in August. He also later said that overweight women could benefit from living amid Mount Ira’s males: "There’s a great incentive because there’s that much attention focused on them and they become interested in looking better — and in no time they just shed [the weight]."
Meredith Burgmann, who organized the annual sexist-centric Ernie awards, had this to say about dishonoring Malony: "I think the message is ever vigilant, ever watchful, keeping people, keeping blokes on their toes and making sure that we name and shame them." Malony obviously feels no shame — he dismissed the "sexism" stamp with this gem of a defense: "The protesters are blaming me for their looks." Sexist of the year? This guy deserves a lifetime achievement award!
