Obama Names Alyssa Mastromonaco Director of Scheduling and Advance

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

President-elect Barack Obama continues to construct his White House and today filled yet another key position — with a woman!

Political bloggers for The New York Times and ABC reported today that Alyssa Mastromonaco, who has worked for Obama since 2005 and was key in selecting Joe Biden as the vice-presidential running mate, will be his director of scheduling and advance. Though he doesn’t mention Mastromonaco by name, Mr. Obama released the following statement:

I am honored to have this hardworking and trusted adviser join my administration as we work to tackle serious challenges and bring the change that we need to Washington. This talented and dynamic individual brings diverse skills to the White House, and is ready to work hard in service to the American people at this defining moment in history.

Prior to working for Obama’s campaign, Mastromonaco worked for John Kerry’s presidential campaign. Obviously this gig worked out a bit better.

So what does the “director of scheduling and advance” do? And why is the word “advance” hanging out there with nothing to do at all?

Hi, Elle Kaye. I dug around a little but could only find a job description for Director of Scheduling and Advance for the PA governor. Sounds like an executive secretary position to me — except for that word again (“advance”). Here it is: http://www.dgs.state.pa.us/dgs/lib/dgs/pa_manual/section4/office_of_sche… The Office of Scheduling and Advance has three primary responsibilities. First, the Office works closely with the Governor to develop and implement the Governor’s daily schedule. This includes coordinating all meetings, events, briefings, office time, photo opportunities, and daily travel arrangements. The director is responsible for prioritizing the long-term schedule in accordance with the Governor’s agenda. Secondly, the Office manages the hundreds of invitations that arrive each week. The requests are reviewed, logged, and responded to in a timely manner. Lastly, the Office is responsible for advancing and staffing each event to ensure that all logistical arrangements are appropriately handled.

Thanks for your help, r r! I went back to the basics (dictionary) and discovered a definition I didn’t know of. Evidently, in an informal usage, “advance” (used singularly) refers to someone doing advance publicity for an event. Lifetime learners, that’s what we are! And an advance she shall be! Whatever the terminology, I congratulate her and wish her luck.
