Barack Obama Selects Senator Joseph Biden As Running Mate

http://biden.senate.gov

Experienced in foreign affairs, affable and well-regarded on both sides of the aisle, U.S. Senator Joe Biden of Delaware has been selected as Barack Obama’s running mate, capping a months’ long search that crested in a fever pitch in these, the last few days before the Democratic convention.

Biden is one of the few Senators with a national profile, having served in the Senate since 1972. He is the Chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He has served on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and is its former Chairman.

It is widely thought that Biden’s long service on the Foreign Relations Committee made him a particularly attractive candidate for the Vice President slot, providing a counter balance to Obama’s own limited background in international affairs.

Congratulations, Senator Biden. I wish you and Senator Obama great success. However, will you do me a favor? A few days ago I signed up to receive an email to be among the first to know the name of Senator Obama’s running mate. Your name was announced by CNN over 2 hours ago. I’m still waiting for my email. Here’s the deal: If you’re going to maximize use of technology, be sure your campaign workers keep your word. Otherwise, it’s just dust in the wind. Come Nov 4th I don’t want my vote to turn into dust. Mahalo!

Biden… so much for CHANGE

Biden is a big change. Courage-He didn’t ‘go along to get along’ with the inside pack and vote for an illegal war. Yet he is one of two in Congress that has a child in Iraq. His youngest son is on his way. At the same time he has been a hard and excellent critic of GWB’s total lack of a cogent policy going into his illegal, very costly Halliburton war, and his disaster after disaster in prosecuting it where the only winners have been the war profiteers. He’s not a Centerist. He’s a true progressive who can work both sides of the aisle without going limp on his values. He’s a self-made man. In Congress at 29, and wanted to quit six months later when his wife and daughter were killed, but he was asked by Kennedy and others to give it 6 months, so he stuck to his committment and commuted back and forth every day from DE to DC. He has actual Family Values that he lives rather than spout them as PR while doing something dif in private. Competent-Articulate, witty, intelligent, fair but a fighter. He brings tremendous skill and 35 years of pragmatic history in International Relations, Constitutional Law, Foreign Policy. All the things that have been missing from the US for 8 years. That’s the face of America I want the world to see…as Dan Rather said of the JFK/Jackie. The history he brings balances the ticket which is what a VP is supposed to do.

Frenchie Wine Okay, you have made some solid sale points. I will have to think about it and research it some more. Yes, he has a lot going on, but also kind of a windbag. Let’s see how he handles himself.

Frannie, He knows he can be a gas bag. Am sure he’ll trim his sails. He’s quick with the quip, I like that, too. I was concerned that Obama might blow the choice, I wasn’t for Biden….but the more I looked, the more I liked him and it makes a tremendous sense. But am not making a sale, just stating my opinion. Others will do as they wish. Hope the weather is nice in So Cal and you’re enjoying the weekend. Spoke with my mother yesterday, she was out there visiting my sister and they all went to Marina Del Rey, Santa Monica etc. And my brother’s youngest son who is such a great pianist (has CDs out and is in his last year of college wants to be a writer) came down with his girlfriend who they all liked. I took sailing at UCLA and the boathouse is at MDR. Anytime I hear that name think of capsize drills in that oily freezing cold water in Dec-Jan. Can still feel it! Have a great weekend I hope. Also hope we hear from Lady Gator that she and her family and property are OK.

Frenchy, I know you are not trying to make a sale, it is just your descriptive writing style in full swing. I like it. Hey, when does your book come out? What type of music does your nephew play? I taught children’s swimming (volunteer basis through the schools) and had to take those water safety drills - not capsize, but all the rest in Ventura, yes, cold but not so oily. You were brave. Haven’t seen the Lady Gator anywhere. On the news there are just people in rafts down there avoiding the gators. Not fun. Hope she is okay, and her home is okay. Hot weekend but okay. Have fun up there, hope the weather is nice for you too.

Frannie M. - Marjorie — Winery - My Alias Thank you for being concerned about me. We are alive! It’s been 3 days of HELL!! The muck is everywhere. Our house survived — not so for two beautiful old oak trees in our yard. They are gone forever. There were approx 700 trees lost during Fay’s visit. Thursday, we dispensed with operation at our office — no power — same for Friday. So we sat in the dark, dank and dreary and, with NO airconditioning. Pretty miserable. They say here — “if you don’t have water in your house or a pail sitting in your house collecting water and you have power — you are lucky”. Our power finallly came on Saturday PM. In the meantime, we have spprox 8 inches of pine needles, scum, mud and some kind of creatures dead on our driveway. We are fortunate in that we had no alligators. However, we did have fish swimming around in a pond (made from the 20 inches of rain) in our backyard. My husband took his fishing rod out to see if he could catch dinner. LOL We live on the intercoastal waterway — the water started to come up and we thought we would have to leave. However, we made do with the sand bags we had filled. Kept the water at bay. Not so for several of our neighbors. We spent the better part of yesterday just helping them clean up their house. We really were very fortunate. I could kiss the roofer who replaced the roof on our house a couple of years ago. We have seen snakes - and spiders (never knew spiders could be that big) — We weathered the storm — don’t want to do it again for a long while. And, if anything bigger (storms) come this way — we are going to leave. Now, what is the question here. What do I think of Biden? Rather slick — too much teeth — lots of hair — sorta like “cream cheese” to me. That he was a big Hillary backer makes me pause and wonder if this is a slap at Hillary. I just remember him in his previous bids for the White House. I remember in 1988 he was totally humiliated in defeat when he was caught ‘cribbing’ from other political speeches. “Borrowed” a passage from British politician Neil Kinnock. Also, at one point, he embellished his law school credits to a voter in New Hampshire in 2007 - when he took parts of a speech by R. F. Kennedy without giving credit to same. He’s running with Obama who says he won’t take money from lobbyists — however, Biden’s son, Hunter is a partner at a Washington lobbying firm. I find that a little disconcerning. But, this is Obama’s choice — they will both have to live with it. And, since neither of the two are my choice — well, there you have it. I could say more but not at this time. I’ve read through all the comments from some 700 hits and, I must say, there is certainly a lot of tacky, tacky here. I find it strange that some of the nasty comments made don’t seem to bother me — when you’ve been through what we’ve been through down here — it just doesn’t seem important. So, I will leave the office now to go home and shovel the muck — I just don’t have the stomach to shovel it here. Much love to you guys. And God Bless you for caring!!!

I have heard Biden laugh at himself over being so verbose. But, I admire him because there is never any doubt as to where he stands on any subject. He has a young daughter, so he, like Obama, is looking at the future, and he worries about our losing our cutting edge in this world. But, I think Biden demostrated his moral values and high character, when, after his wife and little girl were killed, he would commute from Deleware to DC every day and he raised his two little boys. I just think that the fact he talks too much sometimes is not a good reason to reject the chance to vote for him.

McCain is in his seventies and has 7 houses. Obama is in 40s and only has 1 house so far. Is this how the Obama campaign is gonna roll? I even heard Biden pitching that line again on the radio today. Sad.

Why is it sad? I think Winery talked about this subject on about the 1st or 2nd page of this section. She put it very well.

It’s a petty personal attack. Junior high school material. Nothing presidential or elevated about an ad like that. Presidential candidates acting like Mean Girls. “he has 7 houses. he married rich. we don’t like him and neither should you.” This is exactly what I disliked about Obama’s campaign. Constantly petty.

I would suggest that you study the history of American political campaigns. This is small stuff compared to some of the antics and smears that went on in the 19th century. As far as political smears, Lee Atwater invented the modern republican campaign, and Karl Rove is his heir. John McCain is the one who forgot how many properties he owns, and he is the one that mentioned the $5million. And, it’s not lying when someone says that he has about 7 kitchen tables. The campaign is still very early and I have seen some pretty rough stuff coming out of the republican play book, and by the time it’s over, you will see some out there that will turn your hair blue. That’s the way Rove operates. It’s about time that this nation remembers that the only way it works correctly is to work together and remember that we were founded and we moved forward, even back when the Constitution was written, with everyone being civil and compromising and working for The Common Good. We have been at each other’s throats too long, and if nothing else, Obama has devoted his political career in trying to find common ground between all of us. And Biden has too and is one of the last remaining Statesmen in the halls of Congress. So, instead of focusing on the ads, I believe we all need to see where we have shared values, opinions and feelings and come together and try to work out the many problems that are plaguing our country. All of us, republicans and democrats, love our children, and want the best possible life for them. And, I sincerely believe that we want to see our world cleaner and safer and more peaceful. And, it’s not going to happen with this constant sniping about the ads and what somebody looks like and how fast or slow they talk. Peace.

Pi, What’s sad is a presidential contender/US Senator who is worth (with his wife) $100M, has 7+ homes, pays his household staff nearly $300K a year, admits he knows next to nothing about economics and yet upbraids Americans who are losing their homes in the worst foreclosure crisis this nation has seen—suggesting they are slackers, should have budgeted better and should get second jobs. That is NOT the problem. The problem IS the GOP policies that got rid of FDR’s 1932 Glass Stegall Banking Act, and reasonable financial regulations, that prevented the speculation that caused the 1929 stock market crash and the Great Depression. Since 2000, unregulated derivatives esculated from $9T to $700T when the world economy is $50T…very dangerous. The pooling of billions of subprime derivatives is what caused all of the foreclosures, and the devaluation of house equities across the country. If you wish to defend a very wealthy man who does not need to worry about his children living in a houseless camp. A man so irresponsible to blame victims of the predatory ‘financial tactics’ that the GOP should be regulating for the people, instead of benefitting from their banker/pay masters sharks. Then by all means—-go ahead. It isn’t petty politics to be concerned about getting back a government of, by and for the people instead of supporting the rich politicans that haven’t got a clue. And McCain does not have a clue. I do not want a D student who knows nothing about economics and kicks the people who are losing their homes when he has too many to count. Here’s what’s happening to thousands of people who’ve lost homes, jobs, medical insurance, can’t buy food or gas and McCain has the never to blame THEM for the GOP so called policies. IE steal from the middle class and the infrastructure and education etc to give to the rich? Creating vast gulfs of inequity and a super rich class, another gilded age. http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t19/wellbred/20080216_121355_ONA01Ten… ABC News: Tent cities growing as a result of foreclosure crisis: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/2007…

Winery Life, Thanks for the research for my comment that somehow printed after yours. I have yet to figure out how to actually sneak into a thread in the spot I want. Well said about McCain, and ditto. CA
