Barbra Streisand Talks Politics

Barbra Streisand has been in show business for decades, and again, she’s weighing in on politics, as well.

The singer-actress-director agreed to an e-mail Q&A with Politico.com, in which she talked about shifting support from Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama for president, what sort of policies our next president should pursue, and Hollywood celebrities speaking out on political affairs. “The Prince of Tides” star said she has in fact met and spoken personally with Obama, and she would “absolutely consider” performing for him and the Democratic Party, if asked. She also said she is closely following the U.S. Senate races in this year’s election.

Here are some of the questions and answers, not all of which are posted here in their entirety. Follow the links above to read more.

Q.) You strongly supported Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic nomination. Was switching to Sen. Barack Obama difficult?

A.)…Supporting Sen. Obama for President was an immediate decision for me after Sen. Clinton ended her bid for the Democratic nomination. …It was a historical race, with Hillary breaking through that glass ceiling for all women and Barack inspiring young kids that they can overcome their circumstances to reach greatness.

Q.) What do you say to Hillary’s fans that might be moving to vote for McCain — a figure that’s been estimated to be as high as 15 percent of her supporters?

A.)…There is too much at stake right now to elect another George W. Bush to the White House. And John McCain is just that.

Q.) Which Clinton policies do you think Obama should embrace, and what role would you like to see her have in his administration, should he be elected?

A.) I would like to see him embrace her universal healthcare policy. But it is ultimately up to the two of them to decide whether she will be more effective as a leader in the Senate or if she should work in the Administration. She has years of experience in public service and her work serving the needs of children and poor and working class Americans is incredibly admirable.

Q.) A lot of folks object to "Hollywood celebrities" participating in political discourse. Aside from pure disagreement over certain issues, why do you think there’s such a backlash when you or other well-known performers speak your mind?

A.) …I see myself first and foremost as a citizen of this country. And I am outspoken about the issues I care about like healthcare, global warming, the war in Iraq, energy independence, education, poverty and so on.

Q.) How do you think the election will play itself out over the next four months? Do you think the subject of race will continue to be a factor?

A.)…I want to believe that our country can see beyond race as a factor in voting for a Presidential candidate…that instead, a candidate’s intellect, vision, political values and policies override any consideration of his skin color. But on some level, it would be naive to think that race will not be a factor.

Q.) There’s been a lot of discussion about Israel during this race so far. Should this issue have a major place in this year’s election?

A.) Issues of foreign policy have a place in every election for President. As a woman, a Jew, and a strong supporter of Israel, I am confident Sen. Obama is committed to Israel’s safety and security.

You can look at Obama’s website for his policies and his plans for the economy. These issues you bring up are important and I would think you would seriously and extensively be researching the differences between Obamas’ proposals and McCain’s, because they will affect your life so profoundly. The fact that McCain will makes Bush’ tax cuts to the wealthy permanent, while Obama will reverse President Bush’s income tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, while giving a tax credit of up to $500 for low- and middle-income workers is a good place to begin.
Obama proposes eliminating income taxes for seniors earning less than $50,000 a year and tripling the earned-income tax credit — to $555 — for full-time minimum wage workers. Obama also proposes a mortgage tax credit for homeowners who don’t itemize deductions. He is calling for an additional $50 billion in economic stimulus due to recent job losses, including expanded unemployment benefits and foreclosure relief.

Barbra Steisand—a wonderful singer with wonderful talents. If this were a website for criticism, I would note that her tremendous talents are offset by her huge ego (look again at her remake of “A Star Is Born” if you can, without gagging). But her artistry is not the point. Neither is her right, as an artist or as citizen, to speak about politics. What is the issue is why are Ms. Streisand’s views about politics the subject of a Conversation on WowoWow???? Because she is a celebrity — no other reason. She has no more policitical “cred” than the rest of us. I was insulted to see this posting on this site: do the Women who run this Website think that I look to B.S. or any other celebrity — by virtue of her celebrity — for political insight? For the record: I don’t care about Ms. Steisand’s opinion nearly as much as I care about the opinions of those who respond to this website. She is a pop-singer — a great one, but at the end of the day, she puts on her panty hose one leg at a time!

Barbara Streisand has a lot of political “cred.” She’s been a major donor since she started making major money, and she has educated herself on the issues, met with the candidates, done her research and knows so much more than the majority about what is going on politically because of her efforts. It is entirely appropriate that she appear here. Her celebrity is aside from her political savvy.

Ok first to James…I have friends who were in Iraq, my Fiance’ one of them…and being an MP he use to guard this huge vault that was full of GOLD, yes GOLD Bars…And the WMD story let me tell you something…Friends again who are and were in Iraq and Kuwait use to stand at the border and watch the Iraq soldiers make WMD’s, they would stop and wave to them with big smiles on their faces…Until your over there or know someone who is over there, don’t believe the Media. My Fiance’ use to get so upset b/c the Media never tells whats really going on over there…Guess your a Bush hater, not that I like him all that well myself, and again I dont support the Iraq War but we gave them 3 months before we invaded to get all the WMD’s out. Just b/c Obama voted a certain way in the past does not mean he will have any clout with the real people who run our country to change anything for us middle class that work hard for what we have. My Fiance’ is a Cop and I work for one of the biggest banks in the World and with one child we struggle…The insurance and oil companies run our world and all Politicians.

C O, I have heard that the WMD is oil. He who owns the oil, controls the world. Who has more oil than Iraq?

So, CO, are you saying the US is stealing gold from Iraq? It’s plunder? What right would we have to gold bars we found in Iraq?

Barbra is a wonderful singer and a beautiful person. When she opens her mouth I expect to hear beautiful melodious tones and she does not disappoint me. Each American has the right, as long as you have not done something to violate and void that right, to vote as they choose. We also have the right of free speech. Barbra passionately believes in those things she speaks of. She should continue to do that. If she wants to talk about her support of Obama, we should not judge her nor criticize her. Each person on here can freely express their choice and that happens everyday. Just as a side note……co…I hope that your fiance didn’t disclose that little guarding gold tidbit to you and now that you posted it, it results in being a top secret leak. The armed services frown upon military or former military releasing any type of information like guarding gold and where it was and other military information. Peace and Goodwill….doll

Doll Lady—“Each American has the right, as long as you have not done something to violate and void that right, to vote as they choose. We also have the right of free speech.”—How true!—That’s what I admire about you. You would never say anything rude, or vulgar, or disgusting or personally attack someone just because you disagree with them in politics. (Maybe it’s the residual Republican coming out in you! LOL) Everyone should follow your sterling example.

It wasn’t top secret but thanks for making sure nothing was leaked…When I say WMD I mean WMD. I have letters from a friend who served who stated he was guarding the border and the Iraq soldiers were making Agent Orange and other WMD’s and would stop and wave to them…I can’t say that I am sorry to see Sadam out b/c the massive graves that he left behind with over 100 of thousands of dead bodies, men, women, & children, is still burned in my Fiance’s eyes…He said that was the hardest part of being over there…seeing all that death for nothing. Oil is what rules our Country and it will eventually destroy our World no matter who is President of the US or any other Country. What does the US produce anymore? Hardly anything…all our jobs are going over seas, people are loosing their homes, no one can afford to buy a home anymore…I just don’t see what either Presidental Candidate can do for us at this time? We have dug our hole…I don’t see whats wrong with Barbara S. voicing her opinions b/c that is what our Troops have died for, FREEDOM! If you dont like what she has to say, dont listen. That is what FREEDOM is all about…

C O- Speaking of oil, I was disturbed by an ad I just saw. It was a McCain ad claiming that Obama is the reason for our high petrol prices. I find that kind of campaigning really distasteful but more than that, it’s an out right lie. I am an independent and am still making up my mind on the candidates. The last two bits McCain did on Obama (satire video and this ad) have made me think quite lowly of him. We can look to no other than our current POTUS for the trouble our country is in right now.

Arty…I dont like any of the commercials I see from either one of the,McCain or Obama…I have never like the Political Commercials…I try to read as much as I can by going to each Canidates website. In the last election I voted Bush b/c I didnt like Kerry…Lord what a joke he was…Not too happy about McCain or Obama so not sure which way I am voting this year. Like so many others I may see who the VP’s are and go from there. I have said this in the past and will say it again. I am scared if Obama wins our KKK (which does still exist) will take him out or some little punk thinking he is the White Race (whatever that may be) will take him out b/c of his skin color…Lord I PRAY everday that doesnt happen if Obama wins…I also pray that if McCain is elected he doesnt go nuts or something so I truly feel this election will come down to who the VP’s are. If Obama wants my vote, Edwards as VP…McCain should pick Edward also! I think our Country needs a big kick in the butt…we take way too much for granted & that is why other Countries hate us sooo much! They don’t care who our President is or will be. They just don’t like us and what we stand for, Freedom but they all want to live like us. I can’t wait for the debates to see how they go…If McCain talks slow he is considered old and loosing his memory but if Obama talks slow he is considered educated and thinking about his responses…Its amazing to me how critical we all are…who are we to judge anyone?

C O- I agree about the commercials. However, recently on this site Obama was criticized for speaking slowly in response to an interview. It was one of Liz’s contributions. That’s why I can’t wait to see the debates. Isn’t it strange that we have to worry about Obama being killed for running for POTUS. It is a real fear for real awful reasons. If I were a republican I wouldn’t have that worry, even after the terrible things that this administration has done to our country. Liberals don’t seem to have the same reputation for killing what they don’t like. As an independent I’m sick of it all but I do want to see change.

Some of what I’ve read on this thread today is a testament to immaturity. Echoes of Bill O’Reilly’s unending, obnoxious rants. When people reduce themselves to calling other writers “idiots” they have nothing of value to say. Intelligent discourse is for adults - name-calling is a children’s game. As for Barbra Streisand’s political viewpoints, I say she’s well within her rights to express herself whenever and wherever she wants. We writers do the same…right here…and just as strongly, if not more so. I’ve always thought Streisand was very bright, even when I’ve disagreed with her positions. Her outspokenness has alienated some of the public and she’s taken a good deal of flack for being forthright. Bully for her! She’s one woman who’s not cow-towing to anyone.

Well Maurine, I find it interesting that suddenly everyone is sensitive to name-calling. I have been called much worse than an “idiot” on this site and I didn’t hear anyone complain about it. Where was the outrage then? What can I say, I succumbed to frustration—maybe not my best moment, but it hardly warrants all these sanctimonious comments.

Eleanor- This is the second time on this website (that I’m aware of) when you’ve labeled someone “an idiot.” That sort of insulting language only undermines any other intent of your post. I understand the frustration…we all feel strongly about our positions… but language is powerful, and since we have only words on a screen here, the ones we choose represent who we are. If we were face-to-face, sitting at a table, outdoors, with a cup of coffee on a warm summer’s day, we’d still be able to have a spirited conversation; I’m reasonably certain the word “idiot” would never come up.
