Barbi Benton Has High Hopes for Sale of Aspen Mansion

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Barbi Benton must not have heard about the sagging real-estate market.

Like many other Americans, the former Playboy playmate and her husband are looking to unload their house. But, unlike most, they’re asking for a whopping $25 million. The house, a set of interconnected "pods" designed by Bart Price, sits on 40 acres of prime Aspen land and clocks in at 25,000 square feet.

It’s actually quite a fetching structure — see it here — but it’s uncertain whether Benton and her hubby, developer George Gradow, will get their real-estate wish. The most expensive home ever sold in Aspen went for  $19.7 million back in 1997, when the economy was arguably more sound. Still, it doesn’t hurt a girl to try!

Interesting layout, love the water surrounding the property. But good luck barbi, even the millionaires are having a time of it these days.

The “Haves” still have enough to pay this for property and no doubt it will sell quickly.

Read the article “Profiles in Panic” in the January Vanity Fair, and you will discover than many houses even less pricey than this are sitting unsold, plus other tales of woe among the mega rich. As an aside, there is also a great article on Tina Fey, who is on the cover.

They will need to find someone wiling to overpay by at least $15M, with an affinity for a dated-Jetson like structure lacking any charm or recognizable architectural vernacular, other than as it relates to hubby’s profession as a developer of mobile home parks….hence the ‘pod’ idea supersized. Saudi Prince? [except they go for Dubai] Russian Mob king-pin? [they seem concentrated in So of France] Barbi’s Bel Air abode is for sale too at $17M. Her husband was released from prison after serving 17 months or so for tax fraud…so guess it’s time to pay the fines. Of the Top Ten worst R.E. markets in the US, 8 are in Southern California…I think #1 is LA…so good luck with their Bel Air place….esp when there are truly charming places in Bel Air for a quarter of the price…and when their home there resembles a Las Vegas 1960s hotel, so that narrows the buying field further one would think. In Pebble Beach where the most expensive home on the market now is $35M, and a home built for one of the Beach Boys is for sale for $7.8M….the high-end market is still fairly strong. The ‘Beach Boy’ house is under ‘Listings” then “Pebble Beach ocean view” and listed as Flavin Ln. [or something like that] http://www.mikecanning.com/ Barbi’s Aspen house isn’t going to sell….there are lots of great homes for sale under market and if wait awhile they will all be even far lower.

PS: Actually, there are a number of houses in the Snowmass area of Aspen for sale for $24M+ but none of them have 40 acres…..maybe Ms. Benton should sub-divide and sell parcels…if its buildable land.

Ms. Reporter…. Sorry to tell you bad news…But Ms Benton and Mr. Gradow are doing just fine…The house in Aspen is NOT for sale.It was on the market over 10 yrs ago for 25 mil but is not and has not been since. The article that came from FORBES that states the house is for sale was written YEARS ago..IF it was it would be more like 50 mil…..or atleast they may consider selling at that price. you were correct in the fact that there are few properties in Starwood with 40 acres..that alone is worth a bundle. And one more note..The Architect of the house was Bart Prince..the cantilevers were his design..Nothing to do with mobile home parks…forgive me if that was not you that stated that in this blog. I understand that alot of people would like to kick the wealthy when things are looking bad for them……

My daughter works for a big real estate company here in Houston and she says it is the high end properties that are still selling in our area but there is high end and there is over the top.

It’s not particularly attractive. Maybe 20 years ago, but it doesn’t have any appeal in today’s era. I just can’t see anyone wanting to spend 25 million for that mansion. Maybe they would for the property to rebuild?

Here in Florida some markets have dropped 80-90% of their bubble peak 3 years ago. But other markets seem to be holding up well. I heard a guy sold a house in Palm Beach for $40 million that he recently paid 10 million for so who can figure. Though Aspen has held up well in other market declines I think this time the bubble’s finally busting there. The pricing is just so ridiculous that reality is going to hit at some point. I’d rather be buying oceanfront property in Florida for $100 a foot than pay $1500-$2000 a foot for some old property in Aspen.
