'Beauty Pageant' Police Officer Deanna Mory Fired

Deanna Mory would be wise not to ask the Chula Vista, CA, police department for a recommendation. Why? Well, first and foremost, they just gave 24-year-old Mory the boot after her former fiancé accused her of stealing the $17,000 diamond engagement ring she originally returned after the breakup.

Chula Vista spokesperson Bernard Gonzales declined to get into specifics on Mory’s sacking, but did confirm that she and the department have "separated," an exceedingly polite euphemism.

This isn’t the first time Mory’s gone up against police brass. The stunning beauty filed a lawsuit in January of 2006 after officials forbade her from participating in national beauty pageants. According to Mory, the firing’s simply an act of retaliation, but Mory refuses to let the brouhaha get her down. She said, “It’s been difficult, but somebody told me a long time ago: ‘Just remember you’re not the one losing sleep at night, because you didn’t do anything wrong." Mory’s attorney, Greg Petersen, couldn’t be reached for comment, but he believes the firing’s unjustified because, as the San Francisco Chronicle reports, "the city has no right to litigate who owns an engagement ring in a failed engagement." They’re currently appealing the firing and a hearing will likely begin in March.

Despite being told not to enter beauty pageants, Mory went ahead and won three titles, including Miss California United States 2008. She’s currently working as a security guard.

Oh yes, it is a well known fact that if you break off an engagement the ring belongs to the giver of it. She returned it and then stole it back..Yep that steeling. and I do not believe she should be on any Police force, with her behavior problems.

Um ok…He is accusing her of stealing it back…that does not mean she actually stole it back, is there proof? In the US aren’t we innocent until proven guilty?

I dont understand why its a shame for her to be beauty padgents b/c she is a cop? What difference does it make? I mean she can still be a cop right?

What am I missing?

It would depend on the reasoning for breaking off the engagement as to what her rights would be with regards to keeping said engagement ring. If she intended to marry someone and obviously, that was the intent. If she came home and found her fiance’ cheating on her, she would then not only be entitled to dissolve the engagement, she would also be entitled to keep the ring. If he is the one who broke off the engagement, she would then still be entitled to keeping the ring as again, her intention in accepting the ring was for the very purpose of following through with a wedding. If she was the one to call it off, she is not intitled to keep the ring and would have an legal obligation to return the ring to her ex fiance’ if he should request it returned. This story does not define the particulars so one could quite possibly assume that perhaps the ex fiance’ was also a police officer at this same precient? And as far as the officals forbiding her to participate in beauty pagents, I do not know what legalities the police dept would have to warrant such a protest against her for participating in a beauty pagent as there does not seem to be anything with in these well renowned pagents that would bring shame or disgrace on the dept. I mean her wearing a bathing suit as part of the competition could be no worse that the calendar pin ups the police depts/fire house employees often have displayed with in their lockers ect…At the end of the day, this woman is innocent untill proven guilty therefore, if she was terminated unjustly, then sue the socks off of them and for more than wrongful termination.

Very well put. The ex fiance is in the military and was allegedly cheating on her. Hence the broken engagement. Ex fiance went on to become engaged with yet another woman within several months of the breakup and cheated on that woman as well. Hence yet another failed engagement and that woman kept the ring too. The ex fiance demanded a police report be taken and it was. It was sent to the district attorney’s office and they rejected the case. Go figure. It’s clearly a civil matter. If he wanted to get the ring back he should have taken her to small claims court. Unfortunately, some people are extremely vindictive and push matters as far as they can. Rumor has it that he plans on filing a police report on the 2nd woman that kept yet a 2nd engagement ring. I wonder if I can meet this guy and get a pretty diamond to keep????

LOL Shawndra, I knew there was more than meets the eye on this one. It was pretty evident in the way the story was put together. A true jigsaw puzzle, just a had a few of the details missing. Thanks! :)

Different states have different laws about how the engagement ring is handled in case of a break up. In some it must be returned no matter what, in others it is according to who does the breaking up. I don’t know which way the laws go in California.

As for the beauty pageants, as long as she is not missing work to attend them I don’t see how they can stop her from participating any more than they could stop another person on the force from entering a fishing competition.

They were looking for a reason for firing her…innocent until proven guilty.

I never realized there were existing laws about the proper ownership of an engagement ring after a broken engagement. What a concept. Who gets the dog would probably be a more difficult decision for those who shared a sincerely passionate, compassionate relationship.

This sounds like one of those things we don’t have enough information about to choose sides on. For example.. she was told not to participate in beauty pageants and she did anyway. Even IF there was no policy precluding her from doing so (which we don’t know if there was or not) the fact that she said screw you to her department’s wishes and therefore her superiors wishes says that at the very very least the young woman had no clue as to how to manage office politics effectively. and like it or not…. when you work for other people.. office politics are important.

I agree with Ky…this incident just provided them with a convenient excuse to show this woman the door…I mean she has filed a suit against them in the past, and they were clearly unhappy about her pageant participation—which they could do nothing about!
