Ivana Trump: 'I'd Rather Be a Nanny Than a Nursemaid'

By Ivana Trump

Editor’s Note: Ivana Trump is a former model and competitive skier. In 1977, she married Donald Trump and they worked together on various Trump Organization projects until their highly publicized divorce in 1991. Since then, Ivana has written two novels and a self-help book, and has developed a jewelry line, a clothing line and a line of beauty products. In April of 2008, Ivana wed aspiring singer Rossano Rubicondi.

For all of us, at times it seems as if the world has come to an end. In reality, it has. But it is how we turn that end into a beginning that really shows us — and those we love — who we really are.

My much-publicized divorce from "The Donald," those many years ago now, is still one of the defining times of my life and the lives of my three children. It was the first celebrity global divorce and I can assure you — it was as tough as it looked and sounded. There were truths and there were lies, and for most people it was tough to separate.

But, we all got through it and we all got over it and, as so many people tell me now when they see me, how absolutely great my children are. They’ve turned into wonderful young people. They’re bright, funny, professionally dedicated and easy to be with and be around. I’m very proud of that and of them. They didn’t grow up in an ivory tower, and I know they were terribly hurt at a very young age. But life itself will always give back to us if we’re willing to meet it on good terms.

Click here for photos of Ivana, her husband Rossano and her family at her April wedding.

Now my life is filled with new beginnings. Beginnings I could only hope for on some dark days through the years.

I have a wonderful new husband who brings new meaning and laughter into my life. I famously said a long time ago, "I’d rather be a nanny than a nursemaid." Rossano and I are now that couple, though I don’t have to babysit him. He attacks life with a joie de vivre and a pleasure that inspire me. We love skiing, both on snow and water. We love dancing and learning new things. We love to travel together, experiencing new places and people and food and wine! Now he’s on the road to a new singing career, and it looks very promising. He sang three songs at our recent wedding and some talent agents in the audience got him to make a CD. He definitely knows how to croon a tune and, as an Italian, he knows how to deliver it romantically. Our marriage is a wonderful new beginning and something I always hoped for.

My second major new beginning is one all about life and the future. My wonderful oldest son, Donald J. Trump Jr., and his very beautiful wife, Vanessa, presented me with my first grandchild a year ago. Now, of course, I am ambivalent about the name grandmother or grandma or glam-ma, whatever word you use. But the joy of seeing the next generation of young Trumps is a joy and a pleasure. With three children, I can only imagine how many more grandchildren I’ll have to enjoy in the future. Many I hope.

All of this is said to inspire my reader with renewed hope. If I could survive and now totally thrive on the overwhelming publicity microscope we endured so many years ago, then you can get through your heartache, depression, sadness and tears, and look to a hopeful future.

In life, there are no guarantees. Meeting a wonderful man is pure happenstance; meeting someone you can care for is a miracle. But miracles do happen. I can prove it.

When you can, pick yourself up and become your own best friend and booster. If a spa day can help heal your mind and let you put your best game face on — go do it! Get back into life and you’ll get back into love. It’s all about loving yourself and those around you. The need to feel alive is overwhelming; now is the time for YOUR new beginning.

You go girl! Finally—-stories about older women having relationships with younger men. I am eight years older than my husband. I think we need more stories about this topic

Ivana Trump sounds happy. Wonderful. I’m thrilled for her. (Strange; most of these ‘older women-younger men’ marriages seem to be among the wealthy.) However … my reality is that I lack money and ‘celebrity’ status, and even if I did, having raised five sons age 38 to 21 (each of whom I think are near perfect), I certainly don’t want to raise another one. I prefer a man no less than five years my junior. Actually, I don’t know anyone who has had success in a relationship with a man FAR younger than themselves. And, for those men in my age bracket, there are definitely more women my age (60+), than there are eligible men. The stats are even worse among African American women. Oh! And the few men I’ve dated … Well, I’m ‘A LOT’ more content with a good book! As for the Ivana Trumps … “To each his own.”

What’s age got to do with it?? Age is a state of mind and I don’t ever want to ‘grow up’ and quit having fun. But, surviving “The Donald” is another piece of cheese on another cracker!! And, speaking of cheeses, maybe ripe is the word. Yeah, I think this guy is ripe for the “rip off” but what have I got to do with it……………

Ms. C Congrats on your marriage! I agree. We need to her more stories like yours. I have a sister who (re)married a man who is 8 years younger than she. It’s a rocky marriage, and I’m hoping things will work out for her. While I applaud any relationship that works, I think there is a big difference between marrying someone 8 years younger and marrying someone 20+ years younger. For me, it just wouldn’t work.

I say, good for her. Why shouldn’t she be happy? I wish the same for me, I actually do like men younger than myself. Wish I would meet a nice one, instead of the con artist I did meet.

Rode an elevator with Trump once. His hair is iffy—I hate it when men try to fake it. I don’t know him personally, but I think Ivana was very brave to divorce him and much better off now. All the best to her.

I told my 12 years younger husband that I have been married to over 25 years just last night that it was miraculous that with all the people in the world I could have found someone who was so right for me in every way. He compliments me and keeps me grounded. I love him so.

When I was a teenager, I got a fortune cookie with a message I have never forgotten: BETTER TO BE AN OLD MAN’S MISTRESS THAN A YOUNG MAN’S SLAVE. To this day, I am always so relieved when I see that there are in fact many other alternatives!

Ivana looks amazing. I’m going to have to get her book for my friend who not only is being evicted from her house next week due to a sheriffs sale due to predatory lending and an impending foreclosure. Then today she was served with papers from her sociopathic ex-husband who is working with the neighbor across the street to get her out of the house, because, get this, the neighbor has told her repeatedly that she wants the home for her sister. When my friend put an add in the newspaper for a renter, the same neighbor, a woman, confronted her in her driveway and told her she was reporting her to the township for having a renter, if she were to go ahead and get one. I’ve just been on the phone with the state banking investigators who are calling me back.

I’ve always been impressed with the Trump kids. A few years back I watched a documentary made by the Johnson and Johnson heir. He made a beautiful thoughtful little film about what it was like to be born into generational wealth. to grow up knowing that you really don’t ever have to earn a living. He had a lot of his peers in the film and Ivanka Trump was one of them. She was one of the most impressive of the group. very mature and insightful. Just felt like a truly solid kid. Every time I’ve seen one of those kids interviewed I’ve thought “wow.. how did THAT happen”? lol. Not a fan of the Donalds and never paid any attention to Ivana. But they sure did raise some cool young people.

Good for her…………. I’m a little shocked at how young he looks……….., about the age of her children. Good for her…………why should all the old rich men have all the young women. That’s why most young girls like the old men…………money!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope for Ivana’s sake her husband really loves her and not using her to make his career. After putting up with the Donald she deserves some happiness. (although she really got well paid for her time served) I know that money isn’t everything, but it sure brings more opportunities your way. With money, you can travel………….Go to glamorous places and meet glamorous people. Have opportunities that the average person would never have available to them. I just don’t think that very wealthy people have the ability to understand that other people don’t have their privileges. My god, I’m sounding so cynical and that’s not the way I am at all….. I wish her and her new husband happiness. We all deserve happiness.
