Will Bette Midler's 'Showgirl Must Go On' Tour Go On if Tickets Don't Sell?

Will The Showgirl Go On?

Bette Midler via bettemidler.com

Bette Midler isn’t singing in the new year. A source told PerezHilton.com (the site owned by the king of Internet gossip, Perez Hilton) that Midler’s Las Vegas tour is opening to smaller crowds than anticipated.

"Between December 30th and January 4th, Midler performed five shows and only sold out one," a source told the website. "That’s embarrassing! All those shows should have been sold out. It was the holidays!" Hilton blames the economy, and we agree. In times like these, it seems something’s gotta give!

Midler’s Las Vegas extravaganza premiered last year at Caesars Palace, and according to Midler took off with "rave reviews and sold-out houses. "I couldn’t be more excited!" she wrote on her website. But then she adds, "If you haven’t been to Vegas to see me, hop a plane or steal a car but get your ass out here." Midler’s performance, called the "Showgirl Must Go On," needs people so the Showgirl can go on. Click here to support The Divine Miss M.

Oh no. I certainly hope the arts are not going to suffer too badly through this crisis. Hilton is a buffoon in boarder clothes. Its not embarrassing for Bette. Its circumstantial that her ticket sales are off.

How much are the tickets?

Ms. Dee, I just looked them up…they’re pricey, but include dinner and one drink (surely not enough!). Tickets range from $94 through $272. And, she has several sold out dates in January.

Well so much for my theory that in tough economics times the one constant is always, sex, alcohol and theater. If Las Vegas is seeing a drop off (a place that encompasses all three) than surely the rest of the country must be seeing it as well.

Belinda, I email a friend in Nevada regularly. She tells me that the casinos in the small border town where I lived for a while, that used to be crowded all the time, are now close to empty and one closed right before Christmas. Put 350 people out of work at the worst time, only kept the hotel open. It seems people are even giving up on the hopes of that one big win.

Bette Midler is beyond entertainment, beyond humor and even beyond music. She is a whirlwind of fun! As she moves across the stage, her audience moves with her. When she laughs, you are almost falling out of your seat with whopping big belly laughs. She does not dance - she simply moves with those mincing tiny steps and you cannot help by giggle. Bette talks with her audience and everyone is entranced and charmed. She can be as raunchy as a strip club barker or as tender with a song as an Irish tenor. Bette Midler is pure enjoyment. I wish her success with the show, but I really hope some network is televising a performance so that we who cannot get to Las Vegas will have the pleasure of seeing her perform again.

Hey…just dreaming here…but wouldn’t it be fun if we could organize a Wowers night in Vegas…and all go to see her? (See my response to Ms. Dee above for ticket prices.) She is a one-of-a-kind gift to humanity. Fun to think about.

So far, 8 Broadway shows are scheduled to close this month. I agree with Bonnie Oliver, why have all or nothing. If we can’t get there to Vegas or Broadway, why not bring the shows to our geographic locations. Here’s how the deal could work. Just like the Metropolitan Opera presents performances at local movie theatres, why not bring a filmed live (which is always preferable to ‘filmed dead’) performance of these spectacular shows to theaters.? I know there are roadshows of the Broadway plays and musicals, but I think the economy will definitely affect ‘putting these shows on the road’. I’m talking about one performance in major cities, maybe two performances. I’m officially copyrighting this idea here, but what potential. I’ve seen DVD performances, but big screen would b so much better; not as great as ‘in person’ but better. I’d love to see Bette Midler. I would have loved to have seen Liza at the Palace. I would love for the state of Texas to allow me to have my social security pension as well as my teaching pension BUT none of that is happening. ‘Castles in the air’, maybe. Peace and grace

EKA, last Saturday night we went to a Patti LaBelle concert. She’s slowed down a bit but she sure hasn’t lost her voice. All these well -known entertainers are appearing at a gambling casino on an Indian reservation just 45 minutes away from us. Tony Bennett was going to be there the following night. We didn’t go to that one. This casino is nothing special, certainly not on a par with Vegas. Anywho, I hope you do get to Vegas to see Bette. Peace and grace
