Beverly Eckert, 9/11 Widow, Killed in Flight 3407 Buffalo Crash

Both Beverly Eckert and her husband’s deaths were tragically linked to a plane crash. One of the 49 crash victims on Continental Flight 3407 — the commuter plane that crashed into a suburban home — was the widow of a September 11 terror attack victim. Eckert was reportedly traveling to Buffalo for a weekend celebrating what would have been her late husband’s 58th birthday. After Eckert lost her husband, Sean Rooney, her high school sweetheart, who perished in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, she became the co-chairwoman of Voices of September 11, an advocacy group comprised of the family members of those killed. As co-chair, she pushed for a formal commission to investigate intelligence failures and for a proper memorial to the victims.

We would like to think that Eckert is now reunited with her husband and celebrating his birthday together.

Colgan Air Continental Connection Flight 3407 Last night at nearly 10:30 pm tragedy struck our industry as Continental Connection flight 3407, operated by Colgan Air, was involved in an accident just outside Buffalo. The flight, originated in Newark, was flown on a Dash 8 Q400 aircraft that’s been in operation less than a year since April of 2008. The accident led to the death of all four crewmembers, an off-duty Colgan Air Captain, 44 passengers and one individual on the ground. The NTSB is already on the scene investigating the accident and early this morning the agency recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder which will greatly assist in the investigation. We recognize and honor the crew of flight 3407. Flight Attendants Matilda Quintero and Donna Prisco both joined Colgan on May 28, 2008. Captain Marvin Renslow had flown at Colgan since September 9, 2005, First Officer Rebecca Shaw since January 16, 2008 and off-duty Captain Joseph Zuffoletto had been with Colgan since September 19, 2005.

I just think the conincidence is amazing! I am so glad, however, that she is with her sweetheart for Valentine’s Day again. Mushy, but true :)

Oh my. Her poor family. They must be in shreds. And all the others … A spate of planes that “just fell from the sky.” I wonder what’s going on. Are the new wind and weather patterns to blame?
