Biden on 'Ellen' to Talk About Gay Marriage, Not Wanting to Be VP (Video)

Ellen DeGeneres had an important guest on her show yesterday – Sen. Joe Biden, the man who very well may be the next vice president of the United States.

The Democrat from Delaware, who is Sen. Barack Obama’s running mate, appeared on “Ellen” to talk about the economy, the White House race and how he never wanted to be vice president.

He appeared after Hollywood heartthrob Colin Farrell, whom he jokingly lamented for being so young and good-looking.

“I’ve played the old guy role anyway this whole campaign, now I gotta come after him?!” Biden asks. “I’d like to be appreciated for his reasons.”

DeGeneres also asked Biden to explain how he feels about likely going to the White House as Obama’s No. 2 after he repeatedly said he never wanted that job.

“I didn’t want to be vice president – it’s nothing I ever auditioned for. Vice presidents don’t do a whole lot,” he said, to audience laughter. “I told Barack I’d do anything he wanted to help him get elected president. I never expected that he’d take me up on that literally. But look, this is an incredible opportunity.

“I asked what he most wanted in a vice president; he said he wanted somebody who’d be a confidant who’d give his independent judgment and all the important decisions, I’d be in the room. He’s president but I’d get an opportunity to make my case. This is an opportunity to be a part of history with a guy who I think will be a great, great president.”

Biden also said he thinks the negative campaigning by John McCain — a man he has known for more than 30 years — is “out of character … It really hurts the American people. It distract them,” Biden said.

Biden was also asked if he wanted more than one vice-presidential debate against Sarah Palin, McCain’s running mate.

“I don’t think presidents get voted for or against in large part because of who the vice president is. I do think though, that vice presidents have a role … [when the president is elected] what value added are they going to be in terms of getting their agenda passed and whether or not they can represent the president well.”

“I’m totally comfortable playing that role for Barack Obama.”

DeGeneres recently made a public service announcement opposing California’s Proposition 8, which would ban gay marriage in that states. DeGeneres married actress Portia de Rossi in August. Biden said if he lived in California, he’d vote "no" on the proposition. He called it "regressive" and "unfair.”

“Barack and I both opposed a similar attempt nationally … I’d vote ‘no,’” he said.

Biden previously has said he supports partnership rights for gays and lesbians although he is opposed to same-sex marriage.

You can watch the entire Biden interview with DeGeneres here. Below is a portion of the interview.

Ok now I am really concerned…If Obama knew that Biden never wanted to be VP why did he ask him? Of course he would never turn it down b/c then it would be the end of his Political career so he had to accept…That is another CON on my list of Pros and Cons for Obama…That really concerns me that he would choose a man who never wants the job…so if something were to happen to Obama we will have a man who doesnt want to be President…WOW that shows a lot to me about Obama or did he just go w/ his party again instead of standing his ground and picking someone, like Hillary, who really wanted the job and trust me I am NOT and never WILL BE a Hillary supporter but at least she wanted the job…Hip Hip Horry Obama, NOT

hello? He always said he was not seeking to be VP - it was not in his sights. Joe Biden ran for President. He accepted the position out of loyalty to the country, to the party, family and so on, and so on. Biden is one of the MOST trusted people in Washington DC. He has always been up front and honest. To his detriment sometimes, because he is so outspoken, as well. If anyone really loves a ‘down home’ kinda guy you just gotta love Joe Biden. Sometimes I disagree with him, but, I don’t ever recall disliking him.

Ro I dont dislike Biden…I think he is pretty funny and like watching him but it does concern me that Obama would choose someone who has said several times they dont want to be VP…Ok so he ran for President, big deal…He doesnt want to be VP…that to me says he will not take it seriously…Obama should have picked someone who wanted the job, that would make me value him more as a politician, if that is even possible…to value a politician,Rep or Dem…

When did she ever say she wanted to be Veep? When did we/you/anybody/ Hillary say she wanted to be veep? I want her to be there for all of us…but not as veep…….She’s got bigger fish to fry…for all of us….. Pick a bigger job…any job……. Had she been chosen, I would have been comfortable with her “next in line” spot…. I am not OK with Ms. Palin being in that position…..

I believe Biden meant he was not aggressivley seeking a VP role- who would? Especially the historic prerception of the VP’s role; hidden and seldom heard. If you run for president, you want to BE president. But I believe his role as VP with Obama will be more collaborative than past VP roles. Biden will be visible and/or his input will be visible. He sees this as an opportunity to bring the role of teaming into the White House, not just unilateral decision making. I believe his role will be respected by Obama.

let’s be real here folks - no need for concern… nobody says “when I grow up, I wanna be Vice-President! it’s always been a pointed role to help the ticket, to help get things through the Senate and to fill in for the President so it’s typically someone who either didn’t make it through past primaries or someone that is being groomed by the party to be President where’s Doris Kearns Goodwin when I need her?
