Media-Loving Blago: Oprah Would Have Been Good Senator (Video)

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Not only is Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich trying to compare his experience to those of Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi during his impeachment trial, but he also says he considered picking daytime talk-show queen Oprah Winfrey for the open Senate seat.

Yes, you heard us right. We said Oprah.

Blagojevich – who is being charged with trying to sell Barack Obama’s open Senate seat — told ABC’s "Good Morning America" that the idea of nominating Oprah to the seat was an interesting one and was brought to him by a friend. "She seemed to be someone who would help Barack Obama in a significant way …" Blago said. "She was obviously someone with a much broader bully pulpit than other senators."

It’s not clear whether Blago ever actually talked to Oprah about the job. For all we know, it could be just another media ploy by a scandal-scarred politician. In the end, Blagojevich appointed former Illinois attorney general Roland Burris to the vacant seat.

Blago’s media blitz – he also appeared on CNN’s "Larry King Show," among others – came just hours before his impeachment trial was set to get under way in Illinois. The governor, however, won’t be there. The Illinois House already voted 117-1 to impeach Blago, with none other than his own sister-in-law casting the lone "no" vote. He said "the fix is in" for him. So, does he fear prison? "I know what the truth is," says Blago, who maintains his innocence and insists the feds "took snippets of conversations completely out of context." He also told NBC News that the impeachment proceedings resemble little more than a kangaroo court. His fight, he claims, represents a much more important battle.  "I’m standing for a much bigger principle," he said. "I’m telling them, ‘If you want to throw me out of office then I’d be willing to sacrifice myself for the principle that everyone is entitled to a fair trial in America.’"

Good luck, Blago. We hope you’re lining up some job interviews elsewhere …

Here’s video of Blago’s interview on "Good Morning America":

Frank, not only is he a narcissist, but I suspect he is bi-polar and needs his medication. Certainly, when you watch him(yuck!), he appears delusional.

I don’t think Oprah would have been a good choice if indeed he was serious as with this guy who really knows??? I don’t necessarily think just because she is a very successful woman especially with her talk show that automatically makes her a good choice for a Senate seat. I feel sometimes we get a little silly and think actors/radio/TV hosts etc are just what we need to fill these important roles, not that they aren’t smart but we give them far too much credit for being able to fill these positions and do the job that is required of them. Just because they sit in front of a camera and act/present programs does not make them fully converse in certain high profile positions. Look at Fred Thompson trying to run for President for example…come on now that man had no charm and not too bright either and the persona of a lump of wood. So celebrities are not always a good choice in my book.

I can’t believe she would be interested anyhow. She does so much more where she is than what she could do as one of many that it would be a step down for Oprah. I don’t watch her show but have great appreciation for her charitable personality.

As a downstate Illinoisian, I loved it when he squirmed on GMA. I put my feet on the coffee table, popped a beer, choked a couple times laughing and loved every minute of it. HHe does remind me of a cowboy he’s always using as a comparison. His hair is similar to a 10 gallon hat and after this week he’s going to run like a scared rabbit who is being chased. He didn’t have to wait for anyone to hang him, he did it himself. Now preparing to see Whoopie and the view ladies make the cowboy come out of his saddle and lose his cool. I’m going to have another beer or maybe a shot of whiskey just like I was in a Chitown saloon in the cowboy days. Ok Blago, make sure we see your narcissistic personality disorder! HA HA HA

I, too, watched him squirm as Diane Sawyer kept asking the same questions over and over and, of course, he never answered. I don’t know how this man was ever elected by the people of Illinois. And his bringing up Oprah’s name, well, it showed an enormous push to put an African American in the slot. Illinois needs the best person suited for the position regardless of race. This is a control freak. This is a person who believes that people who don’t see it his way are idiots. One cannot save a good reputation when one doesn’t have one. Now, all eyes on his book which will more than likely be aimed at all of the people who, in his opinion, turned their back on him. He complained today about people taking his comments out of context…let’s see how he will do the same thing. Sad situation. Hard to watch a person who has a superiority complex. They just don’t get it.

Thanks for the recap deber B…..I didn’t catch him on the View…but was curious how did the “make-over” look on him???

Libra Lady, it was difficult to listen to him because he is a classic “sociopath.” Orchestrating his “plea spree” nails him as a sociopath. I’ve been thinking about the book he will write. It will go back starting from the day he first heard about Barack Obama. There will be some truth and there will be some fiction. However, somewhere in there we will finally get some semblance of a background on Obama.

Well, I won’t buy the book because I don’t want to add money to his pocket…but I will check it out at the library….if it doesn’t get banned…if you know what I mean!!!!

Blago has got to go. There is something not quite right about this guy. He is so sure of his innocence; geez ! He is Ghandi, he is a cowboy, he is someone else, I forget. Is he scitso (I know I spelled that wrong, sorry)? Yes, he has a problem with controlling things. He has a problem with just saying “I did something wrong”. But no, he has to make up stories. He wants us to baby him. He should not be a Governor or even a Mayor. Get him out of there. He says he cannot get a fair trial in Illinois …. honey, he cannot go anywhere else and have it any better. I am from New Jersey and I would say for certain get him out of there AND go to jail for a period, like one week, I do not think he could handle more than 12 hours in jail anyway.

Blago should just cut his losses and shut up. He should have bowed out gracefully immediately following the arrest and handed the Senate appointment over to Pat Quinn. He should have said he is not admitting wrong doing but he is resigning for the good of the people of Illinois and then focused on any indictment that may come his way. This would have done more for his image with the people of Illinois, kept things more local and would have avoided what has become a nationwide media circus with him being the star clown.
