Blago's Pick, Burris, Denied in Senate. Now What? (Video)

Drama, drama, drama! The opening day of the 114th Congress was anything but boring today, as Roland Burris was denied entry to the Senate amid a media circus.

Burris, the pick of embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to fill Barack Obama’s Senate seat, showed up at the Capitol Tuesday, planning to be sworn in with the rest of the senators.

Senate Democrats had warned that if Burris showed up to be sworn in without the signature of the Illinois secretary of state, he would be turned away. And that’s exactly what happened.

"My credentials were not in order, I will not be accepted, I will not be seated," Burris, 71, told reporters.

The former Illinois attorney general said he was "not seeking to have any type of confrontation" over taking the seat. But Burris also said he was considering a federal lawsuit to force Senate Democrats to seat him, making good on his lawyer’s promise earlier this week.

Barring Burris from the Senate is "against the law of this land," his lawyer, Timothy W. Wright, told reporters.

"We were not allowed to be placed in the record books," Wright said. "We were not allowed to proceed to the floor; all of which we think is improperly done and against the law of the land."

The whole scene became such a zoo that security officers at one point had to clear a path for Vice President-elect Joe Biden, who was headed inside.

Burris, who would be the Senate’s only black member, is supposed to meet with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, and others tomorrow, to negotiate how, exactly, he can get into the chamber, if at all. He has consistently said he should not be held responsible for any of Blagojevich’s alleged activities in trying to sell the Senate seat to the highest bidder.

The man’s got hope, though. As of today, he’s still calling himself "the junior senator from Illinois."

Here’s video of Burris’s brief press conference today:

He should sue. Since when is the law not the law? A governor selected him lawfully. And that’s that. What’s the big deal? To distance themselves from Blagojevich? The guy who is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law? Shame on the Dems for this wasteful absurd distracting drama.

This was an act against the constitution and highly illegal by Reid and the boys. Burris has a major legal case here and needs to pursue it. AS for Blago—the dude’s crazy like a fox. Gotta admire the gall of the man, or be astonished by it—whatever works for you lolol

I think part of the problem is that our IL Sec. of State, Jesse White, did not sign off on the Burris appointment so the paperwork is not in order. Not sure if this is just a technicality that they’re exploiting, or if it makes the appointment null. Blagojevich is a jerk, and Burris is allowing his ego to get in the way of what is best for Illinois. He probably believes HE is best for Illinois, but the fact is, this has become a circus and it isn’t good for Illinois OR the Democrats in Congress. I feel sorry for Durbin… he went from having a Senator he could work with in harmony to this circus act.

Ms. Dee
Did Illinois’ Secretary of State refuse to sign, or was this some sort of oversight? Crazy. Catch me up.

Burris has a bad reputation for trying to send an innocent man to death row. Google it. burris cruz case. IMO the only reason Blago selected him was to thump his chest like an ape as an “in your face Obama” move. Burris doesn’t belong in the senate. I’m glad he was denied.

This isn’t really Blagojevich thumbing his nose at Obama, at this point it has very little to do with Obama, this is Blagojevich thumbing his nose at Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn and both the Republicans AND Democrats in the Illinois Legislature who have been demanding he either resign or they will impeach him. This is much more about state government than it is about federal.

Just imagine…the Burris video will be shown all around the world? Shall we all weep together and join hands?

I’m with Dee on this. It sounds like a technicality based on the Sec. of State of Illinois’s refusal to sign off on the necessary paperwork. If WOW could explain that little missed piece of info we’d have more clarity. I totally missed the reason for this in the press too. Sounds to me there’s no case at all for him to be denied. I do see both sides of this. Blago is actually not “guilty”…… yet. So he has the right to do his job—which is to appoint Obama’s replacement. But everyone who can hear actually heard the tapes at least out of context that imply his guilt. I find this shocking and horrid, because even a murderer deserves the due process of law. Believe me, I am only annoyed with the process of this situation, I am not defending Blago because when I look at his cheeky Greg Brady hair and hear his curt, sassy tone and see his beady little evil eyes, I see a huge asshole. Did I say that out loud? :) It takes a special kind of guy to help Blago forward his illusion of correctness. I question this Burris guy because he appears to be in Blago’s side. Not cool. Wonder what Blago has on him?

IL Sec. of State, Jesse White, refused to sign the paper because he is against the appointment. In fact, everyone in the IL State Legislature along with the Lt. Governor are against this appointment, except I think Bobby Rush.

I am sure that the Obama haters are licking their chops. Will we ever have unity?. Neo-Cons have different agendas that they believe to be noble. Power to big business. To hell with the people.

I just wish Burris would back off. He doesn’t seem to either get it or care that Blagojevich is just using him to thumb his nose at his critics.
