The Annals of Internal Medicine has released a study that shows that coffee drinking, even a long-term multi-cups-per-day coffee habit, is not associated with increased deaths among women. And among women who reported drinking two to three cups per day, the study found a 25 percent lower risk of deaths from heart disease.

Among women who reported drinking two to three cups per day, the study found a 25 percent lower risk of deaths from heart disease.

The study is called “The Relationship of Coffee Consumption with Mortality” and was funded by a research grant from the National Institutes of Health. It was led by Esther Lopez-Garcia of Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in Spain. Among the most intriguing findings is the suggestion that drinking large amounts of coffee may actually be beneficial to women.

The study followed 84,214 women from 1980 to 2004, each a participant in the well-regarded Nurses’ Health Study, which Wikipedia calls “the most definitive long-term epidemiological studies conducted to date on older women’s health.”

Well, with my five-cup-a-day habit, apparently now I’ll live forever.

Well, as I live and breathe. I’ll “lift one” with you right now. So good to see you! (Did you catch Gore last night. Wasn’t that great.) Sorry to divert from coffee for a minute. Could not help myself. I too - multi cups a day. Love my coffee.

Jittery Starbuck Coffee stockholders who’ve seen their share value fall 22% in the last 3-months will find this hopeful. The chain could print their napkins “More joe for your Mo-Jo, ladies” on one side…and the essential citation from the study on the other.

I love coffee but this sounds too good to be true. I implore all of you to read the new book by Michael Pollan - In Defense of Food! He puts these studies into perspective and explains how the food industry is making everyone sicker while touting all their “new and improved” and “now with more fiber” fake food products. And he talks about some of the deficiencies in the Nurses’ Health Study used for this study. Let me also say how much I LOVE this site!! It’s so exciting to be part of a network of such intelligent and funny women. You are so inspiring and wonderful!!

Andrea-Here’s a link for “In Defense of Food” looks interesting….but I rarely eat packaged anything so he’d be speaking to the choir here. Still, great cover…I’ll check it out in the bookstore. http://www.michaelpollan.com/indefense.php

I stopped drinking coffee and switched to diet cola for the summer. Now I hear that there is some chemical in diet sodas that are bad for your bones, leach calcium, and stomp on your health in general. Iced coffee, anyone?

ki b and lady gator: Iced coffee, anyone? mmmmm, yum. here’s a recipe I created few moons once upon, (serves four or just one with a really big thirst) in blender, add 8 ounces very strong coffee (already cold, best) pint softened Dulce de Leche ice cream 4 ounces Cream Soda (carbonated) 2 ounces either Amaretto or Kahlua (or the equivalent flavoring for the non-alcohlic) 6-8 ice cubes combine to slushie-like consistency serve in pre-iced glasses with spoon top with real whipped cream dust with either cinnamon and/or chocolate Injoy, Iris

footnote: I have used the following ice creams also: coffee, vanilla, chocolate, amaretto, kahlua, butterscotch (not so good), raspberry sorbet (interesting, esp. w/ real amaretto or brandy and a whole variety of others, though I always return to de Leche as it works for all sorts of yummies.
