Helen Mirren Reveals She Dabbled in Cocaine, Stole and Was Date Raped

Gray-haired beauty Helen Mirren admitted to the British press several dark secrets from her past — including a "love" for cocaine, shoplifting and being raped a couple of times.

The British actress, who won an Oscar last year for her leading role in "The Queen," revealed in the new issue of British GQ magazine that she sniffed cocaine until the early 1980s, when she was in her late 30s, reports the Associated Press.

Mirren, 63, told the magazine, "I never did a lot, just a little bit at parties. But what ended it for me was when they caught [Nazi war criminal] Klaus Barbie, the Butcher of Lyon, in the early ’80s. He was hiding in South America and living off the proceeds of being a cocaine baron. And I read that in the paper, and all the cards fell into place, and I saw how my little sniff of cocaine at a party had an absolute direct route to this … horrible man in South America," the AP reports that she was quoted as saying to GQ.

Mirren, who in 2003 was invested as a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE), also confessed that she used to steal during what she described as a "very poor" youth.

"I needed to shoplift for food," the AP reports she said, adding that while she enjoyed "the accoutrements of movie-star life," she still had frugal instincts, cutting her own hair and wearing dollar-store glasses.

A victim of date rape herself, Mirren admitted to being raped “a couple of times,” but it was not brutal, BBC News reports. “Not with excessive violence, or being hit, but rather being locked in a room and made to have sex against my will,” the actress recounted. Mirren never reported the incidents to the police. “You couldn’t do that in those days,” she said.

Mirren also told the interviewer that rape is not always as straightforward as people would like to think, reports The Independent.

Helen said that if a woman voluntarily ends up in a man’s bedroom, takes all her clothes off and engages in sexual activity in bed with him she has the right to say "no" at the last second. She added that if the man ignored the woman it was rape.

But the actress went on: "I don’t think she can have that man into court under those circumstances. I guess it is one of the many subtle parts of the men/women relationship that has to be negotiated and worked out between them."

Now, The Independent and the BBC report that her remarks are stirring controversy. The Independent writes that Mirren’s statements may have a negative impact on the public’s view regarding the issue because of her "respected" status as an actress.

Ruth Hall, of the campaign group Women Against Rape, said to the BBC that the comments made it harder for victims who are "already having trouble" getting the criminal justice system to take the crime seriously.

Oh, for Pete’s sake. Ms. Mirren stated the situation she described was rape but that under those circumstances it would not be taken into a court of law. Looking at the text, it would wind up being the woman’s word against the man’s if she went into a bedroom, got undressed and started to engage in sexual activity and said no at the last second. If a woman says “no” she means no but getting a jury to believe all those actions occured and it was rape would take a very good prosecutor. I would have a hard time with that on if I was a jury member.

Dabney! I haven’t seen your posting for awhile. In fact, I was thinking about you when I was slicing a fresh peach yesterday. Glad to see your always wise post. Yeah, I have a problem with going almost “all the way” and then crying Wolf! Best not to put oneself in that position(pardon the pun) in the first place.

Hi, Diana. I’ve been reading the posts and watching TV. Everything happening is just unreal. I agree with your post about the election. Your fresh peaches sound delicious. I am going to try some of the recipes. Thanks.

Speak the truth, Helen Mirren! Many of us (of a certain era) have dabbled in cocaine and repented for similar reasons. Many have also had the life circumstances that made stealing inviting. As for “damaging” comments about rape? Please! We ALL wanted to know what that Washington girl thought was gonna happen when she went up to Mike Tyson’s hotel room at 2am in a party dress! It “shouldn’t” be that way, but I try not to get too much “should” all over myself.

No matter what the situation…everyone has the right to say no at any point in the game. And poor judgement (for a whole variety of reasons) may be involved but the consequence should not be rape. I should be able to go to someone’s house at any hour of the day (wearing whatever I want) without feeling like I lose all my rights as soon as the door closes behind me. It is very sad that a woman is automatically suspect anytime she places herself in the company of a man alone. The implication is that men simply don’t have the ability to control themselves and therefore can not be held responsible and that is unacceptable and ridiculous. I do however agree, that in court it becomes a very difficult issue of one person’s word against another.
