Bush Dodges Iraqi Reporter's Shoes During Melee (Video)

President Bush had the ultimate insult literally thrown at him during a Sunday trip to Baghdad – shoes.

An Iraqi Shiite reporter stood up during a press conference given by the president with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki at the Prime Minister’s Palace, calling him a “dog” and hurling not one, but two shoes at him. But Bush’s reflexes were quick, and he ducked just in time.

He tried to laugh the incident off, later, then turned the incident into a message about living in a free society.

“Okay, everybody calm down for a minute,” Bush said. First of all, thank you for apologizing on behalf of the Iraqi people. It doesn’t bother me. And if you want some — if you want the facts, it’s a size-10 shoe that he threw. (Laughter.) Thank you for your concern, do not worry about it."

"So what if a guy threw a shoe at me? It’s like going to a political rally and having people yell at you. It’s like driving down the street and having people not gesturing with all five fingers … I didn’t feel the least bit threatened by it," the president continued. “That’s what happens in free societies – people try to bring attention to themselves.”

The incident is all the talk in Iraq and the U.S. today. Reuters reports that the reporter, Muntazer al-Zaidi, is said to be bitter toward Bush for the thousands of Iraqis who died after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. The reporter was briefly kidnapped by unknown gunmen in 2007.

Politico reports that White House Press Secretary Dana Perino was slightly injured in the melee’s aftermath.

Perino was hit in the face with a microphone as security wrestled with the reporter, NBC News reported. She is fine and will continue traveling with the president, an administration official told Politico. An ice pack will work wonders for any bruising …

In Baghdad’s Shiite Sadr City, thousands of supporters of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr demanded the release of the jailed reporter. They chanted in the streets Monday: "Bush, Bush, listen well: Two shoes on your head." They called the reporter a "hero."

"I’m sure many Iraqis want to do what Muntazer did. Muntazer used to say all the orphans whose father were killed are because of Bush," his brother, Udai al-Zaidi, told Reuters Television.

Bush made the surprise visit to Baghdad as part of his Iraq-Afghanistan farewell tour before Barack Obama takes over as president. During the shoe-flinging incident, Bush was taking part in a ceremonial signing of a troop withdrawal agreement, which calls for the U.S. to leave Iraq by the end of 2011.

"The war is not over," Bush said, but "it is decisively on its way to being won."

I wish I could say I see the humor in this but I don’t. Where were his secret service agents? True, the incident happened within seconds, but as the first shoe was hurled, an agent (a good) agent) would have jumped up and been in front of the President in a heart beat. I notice one guy leisurely jump up after the second show was thrown. I sure as Hell hope Barack doesn’t have this level of protection because if he does…..Lord help us all. That is just wrong. Kudos to Bush for attempting to laugh it off even though it was apparent he was clearly rattled by it. His face revealed it all.

Agreed Belinda - not funny, In fact it is a downright frightening incident and I predict that press conferences outside of the White House will be forever altered because of it. The room was a tight one and should not have had so many reporters clogging up the elbow room. I believe there were secret service agents posted out of camera shot at the back of the room BUT there was no room to move and it took a few beats too many to get to the offender. The agent posted closest to GW was very slow to respond. I’m going to guess that this agent will be reprimanded at least and maybe reassigned. I’d like to know who gave the green light for so many people to be in that room and what the reasoning behind it is. Security trumps any possible benefit derived from the symbolism of an open invitation to as many press organizations as we can cram into a space.

Sister Belinda, you were looking at this like my security-minded husband. He could not believe that a camera man took the assailant down- where in the hell was the SS?! I was too shocked to notice anything except that Bush is in good shape and has excellent reaction time- I clapped for him being able to dodge that first then second shoe being hurled at his head LOL!

I think the fact that no one tried to shield Mr. Bush may, perhaps, speak volumes about how he is thought of within his inner circle/secret service, etc.

Melanie: …how he is thought of within his inner circle/secret service, etc. It is not up the the SS to make that call. They are being paid by the people of the United States to protect their president. Throwing shoes at the President of the United States is wrong, no matter who the president happens to be.

That Bush could cavalierly laugh this off using the old “democracy is messy” mindset or using his phrase “free societies” as though Iraq could be classified as a free society is typical of what I would have expected from him. He doesn’t get it. He doesn’t seem to comprehend the fury toward him and his administration re: this war and its devastating aftermath. Belinda’s point about security guards is well taken. Didn’t they ––just maybe––expect something like this??? I have an inkling that years from now Bush will be interviewed by perhaps someone named Burns who will try to get Bush to admit his foibles and the consequences of his reign, much like the Frost/Nixon discussions. We could call it “The Burning Bush Dialogues”–––I’ll be waiting. Meanwhile, I’ll polish my shoes.

That Bush could laugh it off is actually offensive considering, as the journalist threw the shoes he shouted, “This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq.” We Americans who allowed this to be done in OUR names, can consider those shoes to be thrown at us as well. It would be great if Americans across the country, who opposed this war from the onset, would each mail one old shoe to the White House before Bush is out of office.

The Ultimate Insult in that area of the world is showing the soles of your shoes. Equivalent to f.u. And, even though Bush made light of the incident—and who wouldn’t—I just have a feeling that he was really really rattled. If this incident doesn’t remind him of how the Iraquis feel about his quest for “democracy” , nothing will. As far as “where was the secret service”, everybody in a press conference usually has their shoes on; what are they going to do now, make everybody take their shoes off? And now the guy who did it is being feted in Iraq as a folk hero.

I agree Diana, what now? The guy is now perceived as a hero. And the most disturbing part is, he threw his shoes at Bush and those shoes “could have” had bombs in them and exploded. No one rushed to pull him off the stage; he was left at the podium to continue his new conference. Did anyone, his secret service agent even consider the shoes could have exploded even after they had landed?

You know I had never thought about it this way. You girls are right! Some question I never thought of “where was the ss?” “did that shoe have something in it?” You know I’m going to look at this article again in a different light. Question though: Does any one know if they went though any kind of inspection before be let into the room?

I thought about security issues first as in WTH? and then I thought January 19th can’t come fast enough - if people feel like they can just throw a shoe at the President, what else will happen - and I really am grossed out at the concept of people feeling sorry for Bush or victimizing him in any way
