With Name in CA's Gubernatorial Race, Meg Whitman Tries to Clarify Position

Republican operative Meg Whitman announced this week that she may run for Governor out in California. You know what that means — the former eBay CEO has to sell herself to the Golden State. And that’s exactly what she did in this morning’s Los Angeles Times, where she tried to clarify her political positions. "Tried" being the operative word, for we’re still a bit confused about where Whitman stands on some major issues.

For example, on the issue of gay marriage, Whitman — who supported the controversial Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage — said her position was a "matter of personal conscience and my faith." But she supports gay civil unions and thinks anyone married before the ban was put into place should stay that way. She also supports gay couples being able to adopt kids.

As for taxes, Whitman, who’s worth over $1 billion doesn’t think the rich should have to pay more — since 1 percent of Californians already pay 50 percent of the state’s taxes — and she doesn’t want to raise taxes at the moment. She said schools, hospitals and law enforcement agencies should be required to report undocumented immigrants to federal authorities, but later backtracked on the schools bit. Whitman also insisted she’s concerned about California’s efforts against global warming, saying any move would hurt car makers more right now. Are you a bit confused by Whitman’s logic? Well, you’re not alone — the Los Angeles Times couldn’t keep her straight, either, and writes, "The first-time Republican candidate’s demeanor vacillated between that of a confident, take-charge chief executive officer delivering a PowerPoint presentation to that of an ill-at-ease novice who has studied stacks of policy binders, but has yet to master the art of political maneuvering."

You can click here to read the entire interview. Keep in mind that she is a political novice, so we’ll give her a bit of a break — for now.

I don’t know much about her but maybe CA needs a change.

Not that kind of change. I’ve met her. She’s a rich social elitist, and has no clue what life is like for the majority of Californians. I’d like to see Arnie stay on for another term. I didn’t vote for him when he came in, but he has surprised and impressed me on a number of fronts.

Oh yes the life of the rich social elitist do live different than the rest of us, don’t they? Thanks for filling me in.

Not that we live like Arnie S., either! :-)

Shes a business woman. CA needs a business woman or man to run this state. Arnold is the worst governor in history. The fronts he surprised you with are not state worker jobs.

Meg Whitman is not change in the right direction. I am sure the right wingers are licking their chops at the thought of her as governor. Totally out of touch.. E-Bay take her back.

Whitman is actually considered a moderate Republican: she supports a woman’s right to choice and even her somewhat ambiguous stance on gay marriage is significantly more liberal than a “right winger”. Just because she, and many others, label themselves as Republican, does NOT mean that they are “right wing”. It might help if there was an article here on wowOwow about just what exactly a Republican is: maybe then we could stop some of the knee jerk reactions to the party affiliation. I’m with Alex above: CA needs a business person to drive the state back on the path to success. Is it Whitman? I”m not sure. I’d like to learn more about her, which is why we have an election process and freedom of speech to debate.

Just because she, and many others, label themselves as Republican, does NOT mean that they are “right wing”. It might help if there was No one knows what a Republican is anymore. Some the bloggers say they are independents but in reality they seem to be cheerleaders for the Republican party. The Republican party for the most part are right leaning rather than true conservatives or what we used to think of as conservative. In my Opionion Meg Whitman is more right than left from what I know about her.

I think Fiorina was thinking more about vice president.

I could never support anyone who supported Prop 8 and repealing the rights of a minority.
