Can Fashion Icon Michelle Obama Wear the Same Thing Twice?

The Celebrity Firmament gives us style icons — and we give style icons hell if they put just one wrong foot forward even for a split second.

Why do you think it is that it is nearly impossible to recall ever seeing Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman — on down the red-carpet list to celebutante Paris Hilton — ever photographed wearing the same dress twice? Even if it sounds like a swell and smart idea in this economy, come on, you know they’d be chewed alive on Worst Dressed Lists and the Web. “Too busy to call your stylist, Angie? Get Brad to do it!” Can’t you just see the headlines and hear the comments?

But Michelle Obama? Whether it is a Michael Kors sleeveless black dress for her official White House portrait or a plum silk dress by Narciso Rodriguez for her husband’s first address to Congress as president, the First Lady is a fashion icon of a very different sort. Someday, after the current honeymoon display of her White House trousseau is completed, we may see her photographed in the same dress twice — the same dress twice, mon dieu! (Does Queen Elizabeth repeat outfits? Or just handbags?)

Print, television, the Web … Will the media support or criticize Mrs. Obama’s choice? Would you support it? Or would you think she has let her fans down, not giving us what we have come to depend on in these stressful times: photographs of Michelle Obama looking cheerful, strong, chic and so hopeful and positive? After all, is there anything more outwardly optimistic than a new outfit?

Here is what six top fashion-industry professionals think:

SIMON DOONAN, creative director of Barneys New York and celebrated writer: "Repeating looks signifies that she is fiscally responsible. This is a good thing. We do not want to ever feel that our First Lady is shopping her brains out like an English soccer player’s wife. Would the Web go viral and freak out and criticize her? Probably, but I am assuming/hoping Mrs. Obama has better things to do than be Googling herself, so really, it doesn’t matter if the Web freaks out. I say repeat the frocks and remind the world that you are the president’s wife, not a red-carpet cheeseball celeb. When you are the First Lady, the red-carpet rules do not apply to you.”

ISAAC MIZRAHI, designer and author of How to Have Style: "I think it’s WAY COOL if Mrs. O repeats looks. It means she really likes the clothes she wears. She OWNS them. As a matter of fact, I always thought it was rather wrong to never repeat clothes. It only makes sense that if you collect something with your heart and soul those things are not disposable … It’s important to have a point of view; somehow when someone changes clothes every time they appear, it puts air quotes around fashion and makes it all look too easy — only about the ability to buy more rather than how to have style."

SAMANTHA GREGORY, vice president, global communications at Tory Burch: "I love how the First Lady sticks to timeless, classic silhouettes, and I think when it comes to the kind of fashion she’s drawn to there’s no reason whatsoever that she shouldn’t wear these pieces more than once. In my opinion, the Michael Kors sleeveless black shift dress that she wore for her official White House portrait is the perfect example of a dress that could, and should, be worn again. It could be dressed up with a pair of heels and a statement necklace, or for a more casual look, paired with a printed cardigan and a pair of flats. It is really the perfect dress and it would be a shame not to take advantage of how versatile it is by wearing it on more than one occasion.”

First of all, I don’t consider Michele Obama a fashion icon!   She is the First Lady and should dress accordingly.   Wearing an outfit twice?  Of course….all First Ladies have done it!   She’s no different.

Both of the Bush first ladies dressed appropriately. In Dallas, at least, many have said if Michelle Obama went there, they have several excellent designers standing by ready to help her out - I know 2 of them, in fact.

It’s not a matter of plentitude, it’s knowing decorum in attire. Hollywood is no example.

Oh yes, the stock market is falling, the economy is collapsing, but she is still the first lady and has to dress up and I think Isaac Misrahi has it right, if there are outfits she loves she should wear them again, absolutely. Especially now, it sets a good example. The "little black dress" can be dressed up or down, and with those fabulous arms should be worn again and again ….. now I’m off to spend some serious time with a couple of barbells !

E .

Repeating looks for dailywear yes - official functions with photogs at her heels no.

There is news today on criticism over Michelle Obama going sleeveless in her first official portrait as first lady.  I am curious what the reaction to the choice/criticism is here at wOw.

Ok are we really going to talk about this?  I think its great she can wear the same outfit more than once.  I know many of us do and if she does, so be it.  We are in financial tough times so her wearing an outfit more than once shows that she isnt out there spending money or some could say that she isnt contributing to the success of our economy.  I guess it goes back to "can they ever do anything right"?

As I sit at my desk wearing a favorite skirt and cardigan outfit that I pull out quite a bit, ‘normal America’ probably has more to worry about than Mrs O’s dresses.  As long as she looks lovely and appropriate, so be it!  We need to move away from being such a consumer society and worry about what’s really important; hunger, genocide, poverty, and war.

That is exactly what most of us were trying to say…Who really cares what she wears as long as she doesnt come out of the house naked, since that is against the law :)

I think she can wear something twice, definitely! These are not the Reagan/Dynasty years when it’s all about looking like an oil barren. Being fashionable while not wasteful is a perfect balance and Michelle Obama is the perfect person to carry it off! And I even think doing it for an official function would be a great statement. The Time’s They are a Changin’….

Actually rewearing an outfit with a little something different like a scarf or different belt can be fun for the fashionistas to remember where she had worn the basic outfit before.  And the third time she did that, they can look up in their archives and mention that she wore the outfit the last time with a so and so belt and a lovely pin.  Such silliness can fill in space when nothing else is going on (if there ever is a time like that).

Of course! I would like to see her clothing worn  more than once. It  is  so phony not to  be able to wear things more than once. She has great arms, doesn’t she. . This is a transparent, down-to-earth family - I’m a "whitey"  I love them!

So glad for your web site, Liz!!

I am suspecting that this entire post was only to provide a venue for the failing fashion industry. In hard times, candy soars. Check the stocks! Crackerjacks sales triple, people eat more ‘goodies,’ and the sugar-stocks rise like yeast.

Methinks we might consider whether we want to provide the Direct Marketing Association and other market groups with our free input, without being remunerated, ourselves! These are tough times, women!

Kelly, other countries already hate the way we dress, those countries dont need to see a picture of Michelle Obama with bare arms to hate us…they already do.  Have you seen the picture?  Its a beautiful picture and I think it represents who she is and how confident of a WOMAN she is.

C, you are so right! Let’s hope Michelle inspires the ‘style’ of toned arms - something we could all benefit from!
