Can Fashion Icon Michelle Obama Wear the Same Thing Twice?

The Celebrity Firmament gives us style icons — and we give style icons hell if they put just one wrong foot forward even for a split second.
Why do you think it is that it is nearly impossible to recall ever seeing Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman — on down the red-carpet list to celebutante Paris Hilton — ever photographed wearing the same dress twice? Even if it sounds like a swell and smart idea in this economy, come on, you know they’d be chewed alive on Worst Dressed Lists and the Web. “Too busy to call your stylist, Angie? Get Brad to do it!” Can’t you just see the headlines and hear the comments?
But Michelle Obama? Whether it is a Michael Kors sleeveless black dress for her official White House portrait or a plum silk dress by Narciso Rodriguez for her husband’s first address to Congress as president, the First Lady is a fashion icon of a very different sort. Someday, after the current honeymoon display of her White House trousseau is completed, we may see her photographed in the same dress twice — the same dress twice, mon dieu! (Does Queen Elizabeth repeat outfits? Or just handbags?)
Print, television, the Web … Will the media support or criticize Mrs. Obama’s choice? Would you support it? Or would you think she has let her fans down, not giving us what we have come to depend on in these stressful times: photographs of Michelle Obama looking cheerful, strong, chic and so hopeful and positive? After all, is there anything more outwardly optimistic than a new outfit?
Here is what six top fashion-industry professionals think:
SIMON DOONAN, creative director of Barneys New York and celebrated writer: "Repeating looks signifies that she is fiscally responsible. This is a good thing. We do not want to ever feel that our First Lady is shopping her brains out like an English soccer player’s wife. Would the Web go viral and freak out and criticize her? Probably, but I am assuming/hoping Mrs. Obama has better things to do than be Googling herself, so really, it doesn’t matter if the Web freaks out. I say repeat the frocks and remind the world that you are the president’s wife, not a red-carpet cheeseball celeb. When you are the First Lady, the red-carpet rules do not apply to you.”
ISAAC MIZRAHI, designer and author of How to Have Style: "I think it’s WAY COOL if Mrs. O repeats looks. It means she really likes the clothes she wears. She OWNS them. As a matter of fact, I always thought it was rather wrong to never repeat clothes. It only makes sense that if you collect something with your heart and soul those things are not disposable … It’s important to have a point of view; somehow when someone changes clothes every time they appear, it puts air quotes around fashion and makes it all look too easy — only about the ability to buy more rather than how to have style."
SAMANTHA
GREGORY, vice president, global communications at Tory Burch: "I
love how the First Lady sticks to timeless, classic silhouettes, and
I think when it comes to the kind of fashion she’s drawn to
there’s no reason whatsoever that she shouldn’t wear
these pieces more than once. In my opinion, the Michael Kors
sleeveless black shift dress that she wore for her official White
House portrait is the perfect example of a dress that could, and
should, be worn again. It could be dressed up with a pair of heels
and a statement necklace, or for a more casual look, paired with a
printed cardigan and a pair of flats. It is really the perfect dress
and it would be a shame not to take advantage of how versatile it is
by wearing it on more than one occasion.”

It’s not just the media madam. It’s an awful lot of people, and not just Americans.

DeB, was Elaine removed from the site?
I may not agree with everything she says or believes but I will say Elaine just doesn’t strike me as the type that would hide behind another "name". She has always been outspoken and brazen about her thoughts, opinions and beliefs, something I respect even tho I disagree with her 99.9% of the time.
Also, I think it’s safe to say that Elaine, would not say anything along the lines of "accomodating" terrorists and their homelands.
Margaret, ahh yes those beastly hot flashes..ahem…lol. I hear ya!
I wear a lot of sleeveless sweaters, shirts and dresses, year round, and it gets mighty cold up here in the Great White North. Thankfully, my arms are well conditioned, a pleasant side effect when you have to carry a 115-120 lb 18 yr old up and down stairs, or transfer him to and from a vehicle etc.
I agree Michelle should and has the freedom to wear whatever she wants.
I’m glad to hear Elaine, has not been removed from the site, although we rarely agree, I have had the pleasure to have friendly and thoughtful exchanges with her.
Catherine, you piqued my curiosity… the Great White North? Are you that high up there? Or do you just have a lot of snow right now? I’m assuming from your comment you have a youngster with a disability? You have to be a strong, resilient woman in more ways than one. S/he is lucky to have you.
Now, just for the record’s sake, are we not in agreement that hot flashes are beasts that should be hunted down and run outta’ town? LOL!!! No one appreciates hormones till they start leaving, huh?
Margaret, I am in Canada (Great White North, as in the MacKenzie Brothers skits from the early 80’s)
Yes I have a son with a physical disability, Spina Bifida. He turns 18 this year, I can’t believe it.
Yes we are in agreement that hot flashes are beasts that should be hunted down and run outta town, I’ve been having them for about 5 months now.
Thank you for your kind words Margaret, pleasure to be "chattin" with ya!
Marjorie…she doesn’t get it. She thinks that there are about 5 people in the world who are not slobbering all over the latest occupants of the White House.
How long until that name gets "changed"? What do you think that it will become known as?
The Peoples House
The Not Only White House
?
I remember, as a high school freshman, coming home from a big rally at my church and lying in bed, filled with the spirit, silently promising God, earnestly and from the depths of my adolescent soul that I would do whatever He asked of me, no matter what He wanted me to do.
And a voice in my head said, "Wear the same thing on Tuesday that you wear on Monday."
Quick as a flash, I knew, not only could I NOT do THAT, but in all likelihood, that wasn’t really God talking at all! But I’ll never know…
I’m just pretty sure Michelle can decide for herself what she wants to wear, and time any repeat appropriately. And honestly, my guess is, her husband is consulted on her choices more often than not. She knows more, and cares more about the kinds of things he likes her in than the gaping public eye.
Your apparent dislike of Michelle’s looks are noted!
WIth everything that’s going on in the country we have this topic? Ok I will respond
"You Betcha"
she
She makes us care again, and it feels so good.

The right wing posters did their ususal snarky remarks about the first lady. Michelle Obama has striking and commanding looks. Her body looks good and she wears clothes well. Every choice she makes will not be a hit but on average she looks great.
I am sure the fashion industry could use a boost and they hope Michelle will give it to them.
