Can Fashion Icon Michelle Obama Wear the Same Thing Twice?

The Celebrity Firmament gives us style icons — and we give style icons hell if they put just one wrong foot forward even for a split second.
Why do you think it is that it is nearly impossible to recall ever seeing Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman — on down the red-carpet list to celebutante Paris Hilton — ever photographed wearing the same dress twice? Even if it sounds like a swell and smart idea in this economy, come on, you know they’d be chewed alive on Worst Dressed Lists and the Web. “Too busy to call your stylist, Angie? Get Brad to do it!” Can’t you just see the headlines and hear the comments?
But Michelle Obama? Whether it is a Michael Kors sleeveless black dress for her official White House portrait or a plum silk dress by Narciso Rodriguez for her husband’s first address to Congress as president, the First Lady is a fashion icon of a very different sort. Someday, after the current honeymoon display of her White House trousseau is completed, we may see her photographed in the same dress twice — the same dress twice, mon dieu! (Does Queen Elizabeth repeat outfits? Or just handbags?)
Print, television, the Web … Will the media support or criticize Mrs. Obama’s choice? Would you support it? Or would you think she has let her fans down, not giving us what we have come to depend on in these stressful times: photographs of Michelle Obama looking cheerful, strong, chic and so hopeful and positive? After all, is there anything more outwardly optimistic than a new outfit?
Here is what six top fashion-industry professionals think:
SIMON DOONAN, creative director of Barneys New York and celebrated writer: "Repeating looks signifies that she is fiscally responsible. This is a good thing. We do not want to ever feel that our First Lady is shopping her brains out like an English soccer player’s wife. Would the Web go viral and freak out and criticize her? Probably, but I am assuming/hoping Mrs. Obama has better things to do than be Googling herself, so really, it doesn’t matter if the Web freaks out. I say repeat the frocks and remind the world that you are the president’s wife, not a red-carpet cheeseball celeb. When you are the First Lady, the red-carpet rules do not apply to you.”
ISAAC MIZRAHI, designer and author of How to Have Style: "I think it’s WAY COOL if Mrs. O repeats looks. It means she really likes the clothes she wears. She OWNS them. As a matter of fact, I always thought it was rather wrong to never repeat clothes. It only makes sense that if you collect something with your heart and soul those things are not disposable … It’s important to have a point of view; somehow when someone changes clothes every time they appear, it puts air quotes around fashion and makes it all look too easy — only about the ability to buy more rather than how to have style."
SAMANTHA
GREGORY, vice president, global communications at Tory Burch: "I
love how the First Lady sticks to timeless, classic silhouettes, and
I think when it comes to the kind of fashion she’s drawn to
there’s no reason whatsoever that she shouldn’t wear
these pieces more than once. In my opinion, the Michael Kors
sleeveless black shift dress that she wore for her official White
House portrait is the perfect example of a dress that could, and
should, be worn again. It could be dressed up with a pair of heels
and a statement necklace, or for a more casual look, paired with a
printed cardigan and a pair of flats. It is really the perfect dress
and it would be a shame not to take advantage of how versatile it is
by wearing it on more than one occasion.”

Yes, I agree.
I intended to relate that Michelle would do well to follow Condi’s understanding of protocol, yet ad her own sense of flair.
It would be interesting to know how Condie voted. Everyone knows she detested Cheney and Rumsfeld. Must have been hard being so much smarter then those two and having Bush siding with them over her. They say she and Gates got along much better but Gates does seem like the cream of the crop when compared to those two DoDo birds.
who cares? don’t we have more important things to talk about like…
The DJIA has lost 23% in the last 16 days of trading.
It has lost 18.3% since taking office, and 30.1% since
being elected.
Does the Bush administration share some of the blame?
A little bit, but not nearly as much as liberals as
a whole, and the market’s lack of confidence in the
Obama administration in particular.
Many republican politicians opposed the bailouts. Many
more conservatives opposed them. Most liberals did not.
Considering the markets’ reaction to them, and the
inherent loss in confidence of a liberal plan, the
bulk of the 34.9% drop since the passage of TARP can
be laid at the feet of liberals.
Add to that the fact that the catalyst for all of this
were the liberal policies of Barney Frank and wealth-
spreaders, it is clear that it is liberalism that has
failed and will continue to fail.
Because George Bush went along with some of it does
not make it his fault or the ideology of conservatives.
It’s what liberals wanted. And they got it.
They lose.
Again.
Unfortunately they are taking us down with them this time.
Fashion icon, the First Lady is not, nor the 2nd … as long as they dress appropriately (for their age, too, would help).
For anyone in leadership, bringing attention to one’s attire is just not done; however, that being written by moi, once one attains respect in their career and/or leadership fretting about attire is unnecessary. Simple adherence to standards of appropriate attire is all that is expected.
It is certainly a nice change to see Secretary Clinton professionally attired (obviously not trying to please our president).
Women, cover shoulders, upper arms, knees, thighs (inner, too), and navels. The work place has become on shocking display of women-in-desperate-need for male (or female) attention, and it’s beyond tragic.
re It is certainly a nice change to see Secretary Clinton professionally attired
Oh, dear. that does not read correctly - Hillary has always been professional in every aspect of her public life, and now. This stark contrast to the former Secretary of State who dressed in a shocking manner most of the time, often in total disrespect for the cultural groups entered into (including the UN), signals our alliances that the US means real business.
I don’t really understand how Mrs. Obama suddenly became a fashion icon. She dresses like every other American woman that I know. I wish that as Americans we would stop being so impressed by minimum effort just because someone is famous. We always fall over ourselves about outside appearances and who is wearing what and how skinny or fat they are. Who cares. Lets instead try to teach our future generation of women to focus on their intellect and generosity of heart , and not on what they wear or how thin they should be.
elizabeth
Are you kidding me? The Obamas as only been is office for less than two months and you idiots are referring to her as a fashion icon?
What sort of nut jobs running this show?
Michelle Obama dress like a normal regular black female.
She is no more of a fashion icon than Hillary Clinton or Barbara Bush!
Actually Nancy Reagan was a better dresser and had way more style and class than Michelle Obama!
