American Designers Hope Michelle Can Deliver Fashion Miracle

The fashion industry hopes Michelle Obama will be a one-woman recession buster.

It’s a large task, for sure, but American fashion designers say the soon-to-be First Lady has looked so fine in her J. Crew outfits and other stylish garb, that she may be able to throw their industry a lifeline.

The New York Times says this about Mrs. Obama:

With flashcard clarity, she signaled an interest both in looking stylish and also in advancing the cause of American fashion and those who design and make it. She wore off-the-rack stuff from J. Crew and, at times controversially, designs by fashion darlings like Isabel Toledo, Thakoon Panichgul and Narciso Rodriguez. She brought to the campaign a sophisticated approach to high-low dressing, a determination to adapt designers’ work to suit herself — adding jewelry or sweaters or wearing flat shoes with sheaths or even altering dressmaking details — as well as a forthright conviction that it is the woman who should wear the clothes and not the other way around.

Designers and manufacturers hope that Obama’s fashion sense will not only rub off on other Americans, but that it will convince consumers that American-made clothes, which are typically less expensive, can compete on the world stage.

Michelle Obama "recognizes the value of beautiful dresses and not big prices. She dresses like taste doesn’t necessarily have to do with brand or status, but with what looks well on your body and makes you look glamorous, bottom line," said Stephanie Solomon, the fashion director of Bloomingdale’s.

Mrs. Obama’s Inaugural gown will be her first post-election fashion test, say sartorial insiders. "The First Lady is a balancing act between being a queen and a commoner. The Inaugural gown is a metaphor for the First Lady role," Carl Sferrazza Anthony, a historian who’s written extensively about First Ladies, told The Boston Herald.

Many think Obama will spurn doodads in favor of a refined approach à la Jackie Kennedy. Will she do emerald hues, or some version of pink? The lawyer-wife-activist-mom has already shown that no matter what she wears, she’s beautiful. The color of the gown will just be icing on the cake.

I hope Mrs. Obama uses her Chicago designer, that’s when she always looks her best.

I’m not sure I agree with that DeB. She needs help with dressing appropriately for the occasion as well as for her figure. She needs to be matched with the right designer and will look stunning if she dresses for her height and her figure. She also needs to bring the eyebrows down. They are arched way too high. I honestly don’t think anyone needs to worry…she will be a stunning first lady but like all first ladies she has to find the designer who will make her the best she can be. Fun! Exciting!

Jim—Clothes come out of their own personal money so it is no one’s business how much she spends. Truth. I am trying really hard to find something to like about you. Please, could you say something non-confrontational and show how intelligent I know you truly are. Here’s a topic: how did you pick your avatar? Does it have significant meaning for you? My avatar is because I am French. Go ahead and make all the frog jokes you want. I have heard them all. Yes, I am serious.

The soon to be first ladies have always help the fashion world. The question should be will she be able to keep it up?

MO must have a designer. She will need gowns and suits. J. Crew can’t deliver. I hope she spends thousands and thousands on her wardrobe!

I’m sure fashion choices won’t be the only contribution Michelle Obama will make to the restoration of Amercan prestige in the next eight years. Especially since, not everything that looks wonderful on a statuesque beauty like Mrs. Obama, will be all that flattering to the typical American.

For once the term statuesque applies to the First Lady! She’s 6 feet tall! Nice! Designers will be lining up to dress her. I wasn’t that happy with her choice for the election night. The dress was likely much more effective and striking in real life. But on camera it looks like a modern ode to the bulls eye. She definitely needs help with selecting things that are not only comfortable and reflect the image she wants to relay to us, but are also kind to her on camera. Kudos for boldness though. Now if she can just refine that annoying little nervous sniff she did during the pre-election interviews .

I hope the sniff was real. But why didn’t she say, “stop the camera please I need a tissue!” That’s what made me think it was a tick! I was thinking Oh-my-gawd-the-woman-has-a-tick! She is going to be an advocate for Tourette’s! LOL! (My nephew has it)

There is nothing wrong with bringing style back into the White House. She’s lucky to have the type of figure that flatter most clothes—not the one on election night. And, the more she wears affordable off-the-rack dress, the more they will sell. But for certain functions, I hope she uses more than one American designer until she finds the look that suits her best.

She’s a beautiful woman and I love this article, its spot on. She does look great in J Crew and other less expensive designer outfits. In my opinion, the last first lady that American women collectively attempted to emulate in terms of style and dress was indeed Jackie Kennedy. It will be interesting to see how we (as women) will respond to her style. She has come a long way in terms of her appearance since she and her husband first announced he was running for President. Just imagine what her style will be in a year. I think Michelle looks great!

Michelle Obama, like most women, is able to look absolutely terrific one day and the next she will appear as simply so-so. There are even those rare days when everyone’s eyebrows will raise in dismay because she will be dressed in something like that horrendous black and red dress …. reminds me of a dress taken from a crime scene. Michelle will now be expected to look stupendous …. all the time. Poor lady. Let’s give her a little time to get a wardrobe together and maybe someone who loves her will be able to tactfully take a peek and pull out from the closet all the blunders, like the crime scene dress. Michelle Obama is an attractive woman, especially when she smiles; but isn’t that the truth about most women … and men, too, actually.

With the exception of election night (and I feel bad referring to it because I know I’ve worn some mistakes along the way), I think Michelle has demonstrated great taste and sense when it comes to picking out her wardrobe — very classical, simple, understated — as someone ahead of me said Michelle wore the clothes, they didn’t wear her. What I also like is that she walks tall — despite her height. I have a couple of friends who are very tall (and I envy their height), but they are always slightly stooped — as if they wish they were shorter — probably a holdover from adolescence. I think a tall woman can look incredibly elegant if she carries herself well.

MO is in an unusual position as First Lady….she can’t be compared to anyone. She is the first African American and will stand alone. Her style will influence African American women much like many were influenced by Jackie O. I loved Jackie O’s wardrobe back then….especially her pillbox hats. I have to say that I think Laura Bush is one of our finest First Ladies. The worst: Roselynn Carter
