Candice Bergen: Behavior Is Not Genetic

Candice Bergen
Behavior is genetic … not?? Malcolm Gladwell’s latest says success is determined by date of birth, place of birth, or should I just say when and where and how you grew up and that that makes the difference in whether we find success or not. But I have to say, I lean to the genetic factor more and more and the surprises waiting there. We can be edged along by environment one way or another. But it’s all programmed.

One thing I noticed is that in a family of several children, there seems to be one or two who “get it”easily, don’t have to study hard and will make it at any endeavor they choose. Then there are the rest who study and study just to pass the test. They may do well also but it is much harder. I think I noticed a lot of people in show business or commentators say they were shy or didn’t like school but do well in a forum of entertainment. So there is a place for all.

I believe the key point in your comment is “the test.” It seems to have been proven that people learn in different ways, respond to varied ways of teaching, and succeed in diverse educational environments. Thus, America’s traditional study, memorize, test, cram, test, study, etc. may not be the measure of aptitude or intelligence of the student.

Great timing for this question. Candice, I just photographed a gentleman yesterday who’s name is Charles McCarthy. He is the family who’s namesake is related to your Charlie McCarthy. I photographed he and his family since it will be the last family photography they will have taken together. He is dying of cancer. I have always wanted to help and I do this part of my business at no charge to this family. The rest of my family is not as philanthropic. Yes, I would like to believe it is nature, or else I failed in teaching how wonderful doing for others really can be for ones soul.

For over 30 years I’ve said that our lives are totally programmed. I’m so happy someone agrees. The reason, I feel, is to deliver to us exactly the feelings that we are meant to experience in our life journey. Our so called “free will” is our emotions, which science has recently shown, making a decision for us, before we consciously do it intellectually. I view life as serving out a sentence of “perfect justice”. Where so called “choices” are concerned; who decides what the choices we face are? I say GOD (governor of destinies)! We magically lack the power to avoid catastrophes for ourselves, or our loved ones. The course of life on earth is the same dramas repeated with a constantly renewed cast. Everything happens because it has no choice. Life is a chain reaction in millions of directions at once.
