Candice Bergen: A Flying Fool

Candice Bergen
I am always flying. But very realistically. And it is very simple and easy. I just gently flap my arms and achieve liftoff. I can get about 15 to 20 feet of altitude. Just enough to flout it to people and be a general annoyance. I absolutely LOVE my flying dreams. They are pure bliss and I am always disappointed to wake up from them and realize how earthbound I am.

Does that mean you missed the deliberately GENIUS closing argument/rant by Carl about how TV is nothing but SUPERFICIAL TRASH and the networks are blatantly AGEIST toward their audiences, etc? It was so perfect and hysterical. A great Last Word on the creator’s part - obviously this show got cancelled in the risky pursuit of the younger demographics. Shame on them. That’s what CBS did to the profoundly trailblazing Joan of Arcadia in favor of unoriginal, unintellectual Ghost Whisperer…and they never DID reach that target audience after all.

Maybe I will try and go back and watch it on the web. I loved Joan of Arcadia, it was one show my daughter would actually sit and watch with me. Why the good shows get cancelled and replaced with somebody’s genius idea for a new venue that fails, is beyond me. I thought at first the cast wanted to finish the show, but when I found out they had been CANCELLED, I could not believe it! Linda

I’ve read that happy flying dreams connote having arrive at a loftier, detached perspective….’rising above it’ and also having a sense of power. When read Candace’s “I am always disappointed to wake up from them” reminded me that once had an incredible dream of having sex with a man I had a huge crush on [but didn’t act on in real life because he is married]. The dream was so fun and I was thinking ….’please don’t wake up.” In a way I was flying…… Boston Legal was cancelled? That’s truly nuts…will miss all of terrific characters….one of the only great shows on TV. Was hoping Alan and Candace would have an affair. Poor Alan will have to be content with the nude photos.

Loved the Boston Legal as always. Glad they touched on the Alzheimer issue. The medicine used by my husband now had been for sale in Germany for 10 years before the FDA approved them here. I am not sure of what is out there now in Europe and will take another 10 years to get here. That was the scenario in the show. They always find something up to date. I hate that Candice doll and hate to think about the “mad cow” disease.

Add me to the list of sad-to-see-Boston Legal-go viewers. It’s a fun and quirky show that exams important issues without getting stuffy or preachy. When I was much younger I had the occasional flying dream. They were so wonderful. I felt a sense of freedom and exhilaration, and I didn’t have to flap my arms. More recently I’ve been dreaming that I can levitate and walk about six inches off the ground—I’m not sure what the purpose is, unless it’s to keep my feet from getting wet. Once in a while if an obstacle gets in my way, or I have to make a quick exit, I simply lift up and “jump” (or fly) over the object or to my destination. Because I walk to work, there are days when I wish I could “walk on air.” Anyway, thanks for sharing your dreams, Candice, as well as your great performances on Boston Legal.

Hello Candice, Loved Murphy ! And I am a flyer also. The difference in my experience is that I do not flap. I just will that I will move and I do, in whatever direction and often upwards, I so desire. Also, after a few takeoffs I become the center of attention as people are in awe !! Love those dreams ! Interesting that so many have added that they are flyers too. See you in the friendly skies !!

am i crazy? made/lost/made too much $$$ for that dx—-‘perhaps eccentric’—-but i am way ahead of most—-you are simply recalling your origin—-most term it ‘Heaven’—-a real place in our distant future, and ‘assembly-required’—-by our progeny—-it is apparently illegal to partake of Heaven, and not contribute—-‘the ends justifies the means, if and only if, the ends become the means’—- simple—-‘death’ seems ‘time-travel’—-whether from Heaven, or here (hell)—-coming from where you ‘were’, bears memories—-ya find a better ‘cosmogony’? love to hear of it—-

I often have flying dreams, although they are less happy…. It’s often some kind of evil creature throwing me off a cliff (or something like that) and to my surprise I can fly, so I don’t get hurt! I really would appreciate a less dramatic flying dream sometime…

I think Dr. Freud had something to say about flying dreams and what they mean. I have them occasionally (ah, there, Sigmund!) but part of my brain always knows it’s a dream. When I experienced a hot-air balloon trip, I recognized that flying dream. It’s the same feeling. The balloon sails very low, and, when the balloon isn’t being “whooshed,” it’s utterly silent. My husband and I celebrated a wedding anniversary by ballooning over Palm Springs. We could smell orange blossoms and sun-baked herbs on the hillsides, hear dogs barking. This is as close as I will come to my flying dreams: hang-gliding or parachuting might also work, but that isn’t going to happen!

Speaking of flying… Well, my flying dream is a bit different than those all of you’ve had. Prior to 9/11 I often dreamt of planes crashing into the ground - several ones on the same “day”. One of the planes dove nose first into the ground. Always woke up a bit trembling after I’d “seen” that great big silvery bird heading nose first into the ground. Strange thing is - haven’t had that dream after 9/11.. A premonition? You tell me.
