Candice Bergen: The Kindle's a Reading Savior

Candice Bergen
The Kindle may save reading from becoming extinct. My husband uses the Kindle and it took him a little to get used to it, but now he uses nothing else. I have a Kindle that I circle suspiciously, but for traveling — how can you beat it?

I suppose it is a great way to travel, especially when you can’t make up your mind on which book to take with or when you are going away on an extended stay.

I had never heard of a kindle until this morning. First thing I thought was that this could be a godsend for kids that haul all those heavy textbooks around. The bad part is that the magazines in doctor’s offices seem to be getting older and older and pretty soon won’t be there at all. I seem to remember seeing glasses with a built-in TV and like that idea. Maybe it was just science fiction but Dick Tracy’s phone watch became a reality. All these new gizmos are amazing to me as I remember the electric typewriter being an exciting new invention. Well look at us now.
