Candice Bergen Picks 4 Trailblazing First Ladies

Candice Bergen

Eleanor Roosevelt
She is a unanimous choice among us and for good reason. While not a romantic partner to her husband, she was a partner in every other way — supporting his programs and philosophy and being his "boots on the ground." She will always be synonymous with enlightened liberalism and courage of her convictions. She acted on her convictions for the good of her country – in spite of how she would be received.

Jacqueline Kennedy
For all the obvious reasons, but also because she was in the White House when I was first a young adult. She simply dazzled. I remember her television specials on the White House (in black and white) and how she restored to it a sense of history and gave it the first true elegance. She was also the first to understand and appreciate the historical antiques and restore and incorporate them into the design. She was the most cultivated and refined First Lady and did a huge part in shaping the way America is perceived internationally.

Betty Ford
Because she took a minor character flaw and confronted it courageously and honestly in the most public forum. She then formed the Betty Ford Center which has helped many people with drug and alcohol problems face them and control them. She made drug and alcohol addiction a public problem and not a source of shame. Also, she was a great dancer.

And Michelle Obama.
Because she will be a fantastic First Lady and I can’t wait.

Interesting that Michelle Obama made your list before she actually even steps into the position. However, I do agree with you. Her intelligence, grace, style and previous accomplishments foretell the success she will have as First Lady. I expect we will see enduring greatness from her. Even with all the doom and gloom we are facing in this country, I’m very excited about our new President and his family. They bolster my faith in this country and give me hope for the future.

agreed—-why Ms. Martin would place ‘Lady-Bird’ above her? beats me—-perhaps they were friends, and she knows more than we suspect? there is an old saying amongst men—-‘all women are not trouble. who’s not? the ugly ones!’—-sort of a repeat of the old hit song—-‘want to be happy rest of your life? never make a pretty woman your wife’. so true—-

typical life issues—-the real deal? what-to-hell do you mean? ya can’t handle an ‘off-scaler’? not my problem—-elaborate, give me something to answer—-not some abstract mystery—-ok? after 6 decades in hell, what do you want, an inventory?

Ms. Bergen, I don’t know where else to post this, but I just wanted to say I was moved and touched by your wonderful performance on the Thanksgiving Boston Legal. You were simply amazing. Thank you.

if you were asking Me, ‘what’s wrong w/you?’—-i may only say, anyone wasting time on TV reviews, vs. philosophical cinema? or Life? physics? life-science?—-it is very unwise to question data of those who know—-with a mean spirit—-Life is fair, or not—-i have placed my chips on Life—-if anything is wrong? that’s it—-i’ve been wrong before—-rarely—-

What others failed to mention, when naming Jaqueline Kennedy, was her wit.. she was so cultivated and was a role model for me and others in my age group.  The importance of education; not just the learning of a skill but the appreciation of art, music, philosophy, languages.. She too influenced her husband and he looked to her for opinions, we know from stories written about both.  Though not as publicly outgoing as Nancy, Betty or Lady Bird (after all she was in the WH only a thousand days), in her short time she made a mark.. who knows how this young woman would have grown into the role… I totally agree about Michelle; the hope and promise of her influence is something I look forward to seeing.

So many of the first ladies have had such big influences and at important times in our history.. some we will never know because the writers of their histories may not have included it in history..
