Candice Bergen's Creature Comforts

Candice Bergen
I don’t have any pillows or beautifully framed photos like some. Now that I’m a LOT older — I never forget my goddamned pills. My husband’s t-shirts for sleeping. My black yoga pants which I wear everywhere at all times for 15 years. I just don’t care.

I just don’t care”–––you are my kind of woman. And isn’t it great that we have finally reached that I-just-don’t-care stage? It’s like breathing fresh air from the sea.

I have to have my rx as well, although they are certainly cheaper to buy in Europe, my good luck charm in case the plane falls out of the sky, and, well, I just wish I could pack less than more, as I always end up wearing the same things over and over, will I ever learn, probably not!!

In my first 30 years of life, I always dragged along my biggest suitcase filled with my entire closet and makeup drawer(s). Looking back, I must have been suffering from “I just care too much …” Earlier this month, I went to Italy for two weeks bearing nothing but a small pilot roller that fits in the overhead bin and a carry-on bag. I guess it’s taken me this long to figure out that I can’t (and don’t need to) take it all with me. A long black knit skirt, an assortment of tanks and T’s, Born black leather flip-flops, a couple pairs of bermuda shorts, swimsuit, and I’m ready for anything. La dolce vita, baby. (Not to mention, the delightfully stress-free aspect of not checking my bags!) It’s taken me 50 years to lighten up when I travel. With age comes wisdom!

Paper, pen and clothes. If going to the mountains, nothing high tech, outside of a cell phone. What I think is incredible about you, is you bring a character into Candace, rather than setting yourself aside. Always stay true to you! Blessings, Linda

Candice, I can’t believe how in synch you and I are on 1) the pills, 2) the black yoga pants and 3) Merrell’s(From Ladies Home Journal interview, I think; can’t believe James Spader won’t let you be comfortable)! Lately I’ve been wearing Dansko’s—because they prevent falling stuff from injuring my toes—and sneakers for walking; but I have known Merrell’s well. My mother and I love you on Boston Legal, and she’s picky about TV!

I couldn’t believe the day when at Londaon Heathrow I was pulled out of the line waiting to check in and held until someone finally asked me why I only had a small (exceedingly so) roller bag for travelling to the US for two weeks. They thought it suspicious that I didn’t have MORE luggage. Once I laughed and said I was going to visit my Mother and she still had a closet of my old clothes hanging in my old bedroom, they let me through. Of course, this was back in the early 80s. Today they are looking for a much different profile - thank heaven.

Hah! I absolutely MUST respond to a blog that ends with “I just don’t care” - how can one resist??? Good choices, CB, but here are my three: [1] My albuterol INHALER, which will soon be banned by the end of this year thanks to the greedy, inconsiderate phonies at the so-called Environmental Protection Agency - apparently the environment would be safer if we asthmatics (…all 20 million of us) would just drop dead instead of releasing our negligible amounts of CFCs into the atmosphere with our puffers. Thank you FDA and EPA - God [forgive] America! [2] A NOTEBOOK…so I don’t have to rant publicly about every little thing that pisses me off…like asthma inhaler bans… [3] MP3 PLAYER (not an iPod - a Sansa thankyouverymuch) because I would be dead a million tragic times over without my music. I have roughly 600 CDs and counting (am I the only one still paying for legal, tangible music?) so it’s nice to have all my favorites in one convenient location. [3b] Wait, does Tequila count? Surely not; you can get that anywhere. Tequila cures everything…except maybe for all that propaganda about the human liver. Whatever.

Gotta take my meds, my art supplies and a camera. That means batteries too. There is never a limit. But I no longer take the big suitcases. Just something I can toss clothes that I can shake the wrinkles out of into. Flat shoes, No longer need a hair dryer because the hair’s short and easy. I have gotten lazy and I, too don’t give a damn and have no time for crap.

Almost forgot, I cannot walk out the door without my kids’ pictures. I am incapable of doing that.
