Candice Bergen's Breakfast Club

Candice Bergen

Hmn. Well I had great luck with neighbors in the house where I moved 12 years ago in L.A. It was unreal, actually. A semi-private street that was a little Valhalla. Everyone knew each other and they were mostly all great. My neighbor on one side brought over an apricot tarte she had made from apricots from her tree and the neighbor on the other side, whom I had known slightly before moving, came over with a lovely mug of sugar. And for about five years, the people I saw most regularly on a social basis were my neighbors. We’d have dinners together in my kitchen or theirs and they were the best of people: kind, smart, funny, talented. And they were show folk as well so we had a common vocabulary and experience. It was a dream, a Golden Age, till one side sold their house to downsize and then the other side sold their house and moved back to NYC.

I was extremely sad when that period was over. It was like a Breakfast Club. We’d have big Sunday lunches on my porch, dog costume parties and New Year’s eve together. Such a good time.

Sometimes that’s the hardest part of selling a house or moving - leaving great neighbors. I have lost neighbors (and neighborhoods) that I still almost “mourn” for! The nicest thing a neighbor ever did for me was come over and cut my grass for me when my dad died and I was away from home a lot… That was so thoughtful and it meant a lot to me.

Candice, sounds to me like you were a pretty good neighbor yourself.

Candice, I had a neighborhood very similar to yours, only they were all NASA and Cal Tech scientist types. For two artists to meet these people was fascinating and great fun. We had an exobiologist, an expert on MASERS and a generally crazy, brilliant scientist who introduced us to Nobel laureate Richard Feynman. That one was some party!
