Well, Ms. Bergen, it’s clear you don’t live in Oakland.

For shame. This is a day to do something. We are in a great historic time of change. So we must change how we celebrate this day. If you do absolutely nothing what did you change? Answer absolutely nothing. If you do nothing but pick up a pen and make a contribution to a school in your area for after school programs or even a local library for books on Martin Luther King then you did something. Here is another thought have you volunteered to read at your local public library to pre school or grade school age children? I have and it is the best feeling in the world to think maybe with what I read will hopefully encourage a child to want to learn to read and be everything they can be. Try it you have nothing to do today or nothing to loose.

I think you will find that Ms Bergen, like many of the other amazing women featured on this website contribute a great deal to society on more than the days that commemorate great people who have shaped the world.

I would think that Ms. Bergen lives a life of service to others, which is what today is about. So if she is doing nothing, and being cynical about it, my hope is that her intent is to encourage others to think about what today should really mean to you. If today is a day off for you, then even if you are planning to read a book like Cookie is, maybe stop and take sometime to think about your contribution to the service of mankind. That is why we are here, to love, care, encourage each other!

Absolutely nothing. And don’t tell me anyone else is either.” Wow Candice, you really aren’t a woman of depth! I had heard that but didn’t believe it. Truly amazing that you are even grouped with the other founders of this site. Life is about learning, and it is clear you still have MANY lessons to learn.

My youngest son has no school today due to mid term exams. We will be searching the “american channels” in search of various documentaries about MLK. The “I have a dream” speech, so powerful, it still gives me goosebumps.

I find it refreshing to find such honesty any where on the web any more. To many people write what is pc and what they think people want to read. How many of us/them do something special on Presidents Day? Columbus Day? Other than drink green beer St. Pattys day? For the most any more, feds. for sure, it is another day off with pay. Sad but true. Ps

I too found your response refreshing and honest. As well, I’m wondering why it is a day off…..the schools in this area close for MLK Day. Wouldn’t it be better to have them open, especially since most businesses do not close and the parents of those kids are scrambling. Wouldn’t it be better to have the kids learn about civil rights and what that means. To learn what the dream was and how you can work to make your dream come true. To be shown actual photos of separate drinking fountains; restricted areas. My grandkids are off of school today and one has a soccer tournament! There’s something meaningful. Belinda, I must disagree. There are no “shoulds”; it’s what’s in your heart. And you can’t know what’s in someone else’s heart. Spending the day at home does not mean you don’t honor the man and, here’s blasphemy, even if you don’t honor the man, we in this country have that right as well.

Andrea, One cannot teach the life and lessons of MLK in one day and just on his birthday. Teachers start well before that otherwise the day off has no meaning.

I have to go with my first response, which was laughter with a touch of “uh oh, she’s gonna get it now.” Good for you, Candace. I appreciate your honesty and humor, and in no way feel that your response has anything to do with how “deep” you are as a human being. That’s a bit of a stretch.

Well said sentiments Gianna. I agree. Given Ms Bergen has generously given and continues to give so much to society, not only through her acting talent it is a stretch to suggest that she is not deep. That she chooses not to publicise everything she does, I think is one of her most endearing qualities. She is an intelligent and civic minded woman who has done a lot more for advancing society without seeking the approval and publicity that many of the celebrities of the day crave.
