Caroline Kennedy Finally Talks to Press, Pokes Fun at NY Times (Video)

In this series, which started in July ‘08, wowOwow follows the political news swirling around Caroline Kennedy since her surprise endorsement of Barack Obama and high-profile placement on his VP selection committee. Now, Caroline is ready to launch a political career of her own. With the Caroline Kennedy Candidacy Watch, we’ll follow all the latest news.

Caroline Kennedy finally sat down with some New York newspapers over the weekend to tell us a little bit about who she is and what she stands for – or not, depending on which interview you read.

The New York Times says that while Kennedy defended her reasons for why she should become the next junior senator from New York, she’s not being too specific about anything.

In an interview with Times reporters Nicholas Confessore and David M. Halbfinger, Kennedy "provided only the broadest of rationales for her candidacy for the Senate, saying her experience as a mother, author and school fund-raiser, her commitment to public service and her deep political connections had prepared her for the job," the newspaper says. "She still seemed less like a candidate than an idea of one: forceful but vague, largely undefined and seemingly determined to remain that way."

Kennedy is hoping to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate. It’s up to New York Gov. David Paterson to pick Clinton’s replacement. Kennedy still is not disclosing information about her finances, but did admit the economic downturn has affected her family a bit. She said it’s too soon to say how she could improve on Clinton’s performance, admitted she’s not a "conventional choice," and said her celebrity could help bring home attention — and financial help — to New Yorkers and their needs.

"This is the opportunity that’s presenting itself right now, and I’m interested if the governor thinks that I could do a good job and help New York and help him," Kennedy said.

She also credited her mom, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, with giving her the courage to seek the Senate job.

But when Confessore and Halbfinger asked Kennedy to describe the moment she decided to seek the Senate seat, Kennedy got a little testy.

"Have you guys ever thought about writing for, like, a woman’s magazine or something?" she asked them. "I thought you were the crack political team."

Ouch.

Kennedy is taking heat, even from fellow Democrats, for not being experienced enough for the job, and for not telling people what she’s about (à la Sarah Palin). Before this weekend’s interviews, DNC member and longtime Clinton surrogate Robert Zimmerman blasted Kennedy, saying (hat tip, Politico): "Caroline Kennedy has got to demonstrate the leadership and commitment she has to the state … I mean, Queen Elizabeth is more accessible to her subjects than Caroline Kennedy has been in terms of talking about the issues."

Although many Democrats have bashed her for being too close to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and they’re not sure she would really be a loyal Democrat, Kennedy said she wouldn’t be beholden to anybody.

"I’m really coming into this as somebody who isn’t, you know, part of the system, who obviously, you know, stands for the values of, you know, the Democratic Party," Kennedy told the New York Daily News.

wow… a Kennedy saying they aren’t part of the system? that’s a bit strange. I don’t like her vagueness.

I couldn’t finish reading the interview of CK by Confessore and Halbfinger. Too painful. Too bad.

Sorry, no doubt a very intelligent and nice person. The experience issue doesn’t concern me as much as the fact that she has never “engaged”. She doesn’t have the attitude or experience for the Senate. She has never been required to do a job… only assignments… from school… to charities.. to TV specials for the Kennedy Center. With the exception of school, she’s had a support staff to do all the heavy lifting and she was the high profile front person that gets the credit for donations. There should be no entitlement, due to family name, for anyone and yet it exists… big time… so she’ll probably ride the wave of the “elite” rather than the worker and get the position. It will be unfortunate when she gets “bored” and takes an early retirement.

What I find interesting, is that the measure of Caroline is seemingly made with a ‘different ruler’—not necessarily by her…but by her critics…with respect to the many contradictions in ‘boundaries’ when applied to other politicians. For example: The soon to be ending Administration have been called crooks, untrustworthy, too much of an ‘insiders’ club’, partisan driven. The thrust of the Obama campaign was to change Washington, to undo the ‘boys’ club’ that Washington has become with the lobbyists, the deal makers for special interests, with a focus to undo the ‘way things have always been done’, in favor of a more ethical, moral, and the idea that ‘doing the RIGHT thing’ for America is the goal… So here we have a woman, in Caroline, who is volunteering to be a part of that change, and so far—-NO ONE has been able to find her AGENDA as to ‘what is in it for her’, that all so often colors a motive as negative. YET! She is not ‘worthy’? When I read this statement in the article above: “”Although many Democrats have bashed her for being too close to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and they’re not sure she would really be a loyal Democrat, Kennedy said she wouldn’t be beholden to anybody.”” I wondered what ‘really be a loyal Democrat….wouldn;t be beholden to anybody’….is intended to translate into….that she will not always vote Democrat? that as a lifeling Democrat she will suddenly become an independent? or maybe she will vote AGAINST what is best for America? That people choose their friends by their Partisanship? That it is more important to vote the party, than it is to vote for the ‘right thing’ to do? That someone who is not part of a ‘machine’ has no right to hold office? And what is this uproar REALLY about? She says the word ‘um’ too many times? She thinks before she speaks—-how horrible—she should have her script memorized first? Just like all the other ‘politicians’? That she WANTS to ‘serve the people’, is suspect? That because her family, like everyone else, took a hit on their wealth—she is only in it for the money? Or is it just beyond everyone’s habit of thought, to accept that here is someone who just wants to be a part of a new way of doing buisness in Washington—-who may be actually AWARE of the corruptions, and sees a opportunity to participate in the molding of our futures? I do not understand how we can continue to vote into Congress, those many people who really are way in over their heads, are not that smart, and who are on a power trip, more than on a serving mission—-and YET, criticize Caroline for wanting to SERVE…… I think this is a NY State thing between Clinton backers and everyone else…. If there was not such a ‘machine’ behind the protests…..I doubt it would be in the news…..

Thank you for speaking so clearly and definitively about the concerns regarding the Kennedy agenda etc. I have no axe to grind however, in my heart I wish there were more places for those who have never served our country and are qualified. Sometimes change means new and different and if it’s a Kennedy or as mentioned yesterday the possibility of Mr. Clinton in Mrs. Clinton”s senate seat I’ll be so disappointed. Once again, i praying for new and qualified faces who have only our best interests in mind… Thanks for your great comments… Dorothy from grammology http://grammology.com

Caroline may not get this simply because she didn’t back Dem pols with her money or votes. However, she is still a very accomplished woman, but her interviews have been lack-luster. I also don’t like the pressure Bloomberg is putting on Patterson to pick her as much as I don’t like the Clinton camp going against her. If Caroline does get this position, I am sure she will do a very good job.

I am rather shocked that a woman with the benefit of her family background and educational background would pepper her language with “you know” the way she has here. Her mother would be appalled! But my opinion on her appointment into this Senate position is that, although I think she is taking the chance of appearing to have an attitude of entitlement by going after this, I do think she would very good at the job. I don’t think she would put herself out there for it if she didn’t believe she would be able to do a good job.

Shocked! were you not one of the many who said “she was the smartest most intelligent woman on the planet? The woman is a ghetto princess! And yet in the same silly breath you would tell us the “she would still do a good job”! She doesn’t even know what the job entails! Neither do you!

I have never said ANYONE is the smartest most intelligent woman on the planet. I don’t say stupid things like that. And anyone who thinks ANY Kennedy doesn’t know what a Senate job entails is a fool.

Lori- You and I both know that D never re-reads what she posts and never admits that she is wrong especially when many others call her on it. She doesn’t take the time to actually read what people post and will say you stated this and that when the evidence is the contrary. I can’t take any of her posts seriously because she lacks credibility and respect to those who have different opinions. It is her way or no way and life does not work that way. Being liberal is suppose to be open to ideas and she has not illustrated that. Thanks for standing up to her. I think people are getting tired of her.

She’s not qualified, she can’t even say much more than “You Know” NO Caroline we don’t, so spit it out and speak!

I have just listened to 3 different media reports re: Caroline…and this is what I think is going on—- 1. the media is creating the ‘story ’ and we all know bad news sells—good news does not 2. the polls so far show she is ahead in the ‘can she/ can;t she’ polls—-so why is that not being highlighted?. 3. the NY Times is taking liberty with their power, in that when they NORMALLY edit the interviews PRIOR to publishing, the CHOSE not to do so, when they published her interview, with them….Q. here is—-why? Who is influencing the NY Times to imply and make sure that Caroline looks ‘bad’, compared to the normal modus operandi of their interviews? 4. There is a ‘machine’ behind the demise of Caroline—-a very powerful one—that is STILL playing the ‘old game of politics’—if it were not so—then why is the media not reporting any of the positive statements, along WITH, as opposed to EXCEPT for? Because someONE wants someONE other than Caroline to have that seat. 5. IMO—this race has been decided by someONE before the seat became vacant!

Americans are soooo strange. Nearly ten years ago we had this outcry by the public about instituting term limits because politicians get elected and stay entrenched in the job forever and folks argued we needed new blood. That we needed more citizens and fewer party hacks. That is still true. We needn’t throw the baby out with the bath water, but this idea that beyond a very healthy intelligence, curiousity and basic honesty, one needs to be a political animal is bull. I think the more distant you are from the old party line and back room deals, the less perks you are willing to take … the more focused you are on doing the job. Folks this is not brain surgery. You haven’t seen more bored people than an elected official in his or her 7th year. You have been there done that… a thousand times. You draft the legislation, you present the legislation to committee, it goes through committee or NOT with lobbyists and colleagues attempting to add to it or take something away from it…it goes through Finance and finally it passes your House (Senate or House of Reps) and goes over to the other house for the same process. Sure there are battles to get things passed or if you are assigned to a top committee (which she won’t be as a freshman) there can be lots of important work…again, this is not brain surgery folks. I hope Caroline is selected, No one of us has more right than anybody else to any public office…you run, you win or you lose. CKennedy has maintained a low key presence and has not been a high maintenance VIP. I respect that a great deal. Where in the constitution does a citizen give up their right to serve this country because her father was the President and her uncle was a Senator? We ought to be clamoring for her given the hugely experienced group that just drove us into a ditch! Also I read the interview where one of the NYT reporters was asking a dumb tedious question and CKennedy responded something to the effect, aren’t you two suppose to be the paper’s elite political reporters ? You’re asking these types of questions, shouldn’t you be working for a women’s magazine? I loved it…Smack them around Caroline and show them who they are dealing with! Loved it and love the idea of her on the hill…Come on NY show your class and hire this brilliant woman!

I just thought of something. As a Chicagoan I can debate the merits and/or negatives of Caroline Kennedy as NY Senator, BUT, if I were a New Yorker I would definitely want Caroline as my Senator. Not only because of her personal qualities that I think will work well for her in the Senate, but because, as a personal friend and staunch supporter, she will have a hotline to the new President and that can only be a good thing for New York if she is Senator.

This is such an interesting dilemma for the governor of New York. Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg (people tend to negate her last name) has been a person of interest to Americans for decades. We like her; we want her to have a happy life and so far I think Americans have thought of her favorably and have left her to live a private life. However, she is now in the political arena and the situation is changing. Caroline Kennedy’s interview with the NYT was a disaster. Her constant use of the term “you know” was embarrassing and rather juvenile. And she actually said very little. She is a local democrat but we already knew that. Andrew Cuomo is also a candidate. He is currently serving in an elected office and is the son of a former governor. There are several New York women serving in the House of Representatives. Who is the more worthy? Whom should the governor select, keeping in mind that the candidate will have to run again in two years and then two years after that? Will experience or the ability to raise money be the determining factor for the governor? Will coherent speech make a difference? As I wrote earlier, it is an interesting dilemma.
