Caroline Kennedy Candidacy Watch | 12/22/2008 10:00 am

Caroline Kennedy Like Sarah Palin? Well, Sort Of (Video)

In this series, which started in July ‘08, wowOwow follows the political news swirling around Caroline Kennedy since her surprise endorsement of Barack Obama and high-profile placement on his VP selection committee. Now, Caroline is ready to launch a political career of her own. With the Caroline Kennedy Candidacy Watch, we’ll follow all the latest news.

You may have never expected to hear the names “Sarah Palin” and “Caroline Kennedy” in the same sentence, but we’re hearing it quite a bit these days.

As the race for Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat continues, some are comparing Kennedy to the Alaska governor, saying both have too-thin a résumé for the job they’re campaigning for (or, in Palin’s case, was campaigning for).

"It is a legitimate question: Why is the résumé-thin Caroline Kennedy being treated seriously as a prospective appointee to the U.S. Senate when the comparatively more-qualified Gov. Sarah Palin received such a harsh review?" Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker asked Friday.

A Pennsylvania Times Leader writer says picking Kennedy would be "another slap in the face to the feminist movement."

"Our gender has spent decades begging the world to see us for who we are and for what we have done on our own. If Caroline had never been the sweet little daughter of a beloved young president, and was just a New York attorney without any experience, she wouldn’t even be considered," writes Renita Fennick. "Yet, Sarah Palin, a woman of humble background who worked her way from PTA president to governor of Alaska – without the benefit of the name of a famous man or the help of a prominent political family – is the subject of ridicule."

Even some Democrats have jumped into the fray.

Rep. Gary Ackerman, a Queens Democrat, is saying that, like Palin, Kennedy hasn’t proved she has the "guts and the gumption" to fill Clinton’s shoes.

"Everyone knows who she is, but we’re not sure what she is," Ackerman said on CBS’s "Face the Nation" on Sunday. "You know, they’re Kennedys. They’re all boats, but is she a sailboat when we need a battleship?"

Ackerman accused Kennedy’s handlers of protecting her – much like critics and the press did with Palin during John McCain’s presidential campaign. Media speculated that in order to prevent Palin from sounding ignorant, her handlers kept her from talking outside of campaign rallies altogether. It was therefore hard to get a handle on who she was, and what she stood for.

AP reports that over the weekend, Kennedy aides offered written answers to some news outlets about her positions on gay marriage (she supports it) and school vouchers (she opposes them).

(Click here to read The New York Times’s analysis
of Kennedy’s answers to the written questions.)

But the fact that we can’t seem to get to Kennedy directly bothers Ackerman.

"They basically Sarah Palin-ized her," said the congressman who recently compared Kennedy to actress/singer Jennifer Lopez when making the point that a big name doesn’t make a good candidate.

"She has a very famous name and she’s a very attractive candidate. Those are good things in politics. But it’s not an entitlement. You know, one of the things that we have to observe is that DNA, in this business, can take you just so far. You know, Rembrandt was a great artist. His brother Murray, on the other hand, Murray Rembrandt wouldn’t paint a house."

Former Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, D-NY, also seemed to be leaning away from Kennedy, recommending that Gov. David Paterson pick someone already familiar with Congress – a woman, in particular.

"I did put it in a little bit of a support for the six women members. I said I don’t know if any one of them wants it, but I think you should reach out to them and ask them,” Ferraro said.

National Journal has a good piece on how Kennedy’s campaign to convince Paterson to send her to the Senate has pushed gender politics front and center yet again.

TYPO… I know I screwed up that second sentence, but I’m sure you get my drift.

DeBurca, Oh my!! I went to this link, and I’m apalled!! I hope the FBI monitors this link because these people are nothing but home-grown, hate-filled terrorists. Sarah Palin may not be very bright, but I do believe she’s smart enough to distance herself from these racists. It would be political suicide if she blogged on that site, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t read this garbage. It is very unsettling.

I can’t believe that people are actually comparing Sarah Palin to Caroline Kennedy. Sarah has worked her way to the top by her own hard work; not by riding in on her dad’s name or some degree. Sarah has a magnetism and absolutely lights up a room with her charm. If the media had gave her a fair shake, we wouldn’t have people actually believing that she said Africa was a continent and that she could see Russia from her house and people would see her for the intelligent woman she is. If I had to count the times I have seen horrible, degrading, vile, and vulgar things written about Sarah Palin and her family, including her children. As for Team Sarah; I have seen nothing negative there at all. On the contrary, it’s a wonderful place for people to gather and show our continued support for Sarah Palin.

Putting aside the fact the woman isn’t intellectually prepared for the job she almost got, what do you think of the racism that is at the base of her support? ” ‘Watermelon Roll’: More Racism from ‘Team Sarah’ ” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/geoffrey-dunn/watermellon-roll-more-rac_b_…

Yes, DeBurca, I read this article and was appalled at the hate that is being generated and tolerated there. And by women.

Governor Palin and Caroline Kennedy come from completely different classes. Kennedy the ultra rich and Palin the middle class. As such, they were never given the same opportunities. Sarah Palin had to work her way through, Caroline Kennedy just had to be Caroline. Kennedy could go to school until she got tired of it, Palin would have attended college until paying her own way became burdensome. There can be no comparison between these two people. Who would I want to be my senator? I would prefer Sarah Palin because she would clearly show an enthusiasm for the job. For Caroline Kennedy, I’m afraid it’s all for show. Now, all you Palin bashers can pounce on me for my opinion, but there it is.

In the shape this country is in, we need more than enthusiasm. We need knowledgeable, intelligent people who have more to offer than ideology and catch phrases. And what’s more, we do not need people who can only inspire by polarization through speaking to the fears and prejudices of people.

DeBúrca: We need knowledgeable, intelligent people who have more to offer than ideology and catch phrases. Knowledge without enthusiasm is a waste of knowledge. Caroline appears to me to be a princess. When the decisions gets tough, I think she will slide back into anonymity… perhaps even take to using her married name again. Will she really fight and argue for the folks in upstate New York? Difficult for me to picture that scenario. She is not a Ted or Bobby Kennedy. She is more a Jackie Kennedy. As for Sarah Palin, I will stop trying to defend her on this forum. Just as my mind is made up about Caroline Kennedy, other minds are made up about Sarah Palin.

For all you know Caroline has great enthusiasm… enthusiasm is not always loud.

Good comment! Caroline is not a fighter! She is weak the way her mother was weak! She is a laid back, do nothing, weak minded, shy as hell little woman from up state New York with a name and money! She is not a fighter!

Marjorie- Palin did graduate, eventually, after transferring to several different colleges where, in each case, she was an unimpressive student. I doubt that money had anything to do with her lack of commitment to her studies or her failure to tackle anything as challenging as law school. Good students get scholarships. What Sarah Palin shows enthusiasm for is Sarah Palin, pure and simple. All you have to do is listen to her. She’s an embarrassment as a politician. She really ought to be paying attention to her family - her older kids are a mess. Caroline Kennedy has proven that she has the intellectual capacity for the job. She is well educated, has an impressive track record of championing causes that affect children and has authored works of substance. Don’t excuse Sarah Palin’s lack of brain-power because she is “middle class.” I’m middle class and I’m well educated and intelligent, and I mostly worked my way through university and graduate school because I really wanted an good education that would prepare me for a career. Millions of middle class Americans have done the same. I will agree with one of your statements. There is definitely no comparison between these two people. As I said before “brass vs. class.”

I hope Caroline is getting help on that shyness of hers. I think that shyness could hurt her public image she wants to have/create.

If Sarah Palin was thought to be qualified enough to be vice president, then what is the problem with Caroline Kennedy NOT being qualified enough to fill a Senate seat for 2 years? Comparing the two is like saying that cashmere and rayon are similar. Sarah is very brash and vocal - a pit bull with lipstick, whereas Carolyn is called shy, which is probably more an indication of the fact she was raised to be a lady. One is educated, the other is only semi-educated, but “qualified” nonetheless The only similarity I can see is they are both female, and there the similarity ends.
