Caroline Kennedy Like Sarah Palin? Well, Sort Of (Video)

In this series, which started in July ‘08, wowOwow follows the political news swirling around Caroline Kennedy since her surprise endorsement of Barack Obama and high-profile placement on his VP selection committee. Now, Caroline is ready to launch a political career of her own. With the Caroline Kennedy Candidacy Watch, we’ll follow all the latest news.

You may have never expected to hear the names “Sarah Palin” and “Caroline Kennedy” in the same sentence, but we’re hearing it quite a bit these days.

As the race for Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat continues, some are comparing Kennedy to the Alaska governor, saying both have too-thin a résumé for the job they’re campaigning for (or, in Palin’s case, was campaigning for).

"It is a legitimate question: Why is the résumé-thin Caroline Kennedy being treated seriously as a prospective appointee to the U.S. Senate when the comparatively more-qualified Gov. Sarah Palin received such a harsh review?" Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker asked Friday.

A Pennsylvania Times Leader writer says picking Kennedy would be "another slap in the face to the feminist movement."

"Our gender has spent decades begging the world to see us for who we are and for what we have done on our own. If Caroline had never been the sweet little daughter of a beloved young president, and was just a New York attorney without any experience, she wouldn’t even be considered," writes Renita Fennick. "Yet, Sarah Palin, a woman of humble background who worked her way from PTA president to governor of Alaska – without the benefit of the name of a famous man or the help of a prominent political family – is the subject of ridicule."

Even some Democrats have jumped into the fray.

Rep. Gary Ackerman, a Queens Democrat, is saying that, like Palin, Kennedy hasn’t proved she has the "guts and the gumption" to fill Clinton’s shoes.

"Everyone knows who she is, but we’re not sure what she is," Ackerman said on CBS’s "Face the Nation" on Sunday. "You know, they’re Kennedys. They’re all boats, but is she a sailboat when we need a battleship?"

Ackerman accused Kennedy’s handlers of protecting her – much like critics and the press did with Palin during John McCain’s presidential campaign. Media speculated that in order to prevent Palin from sounding ignorant, her handlers kept her from talking outside of campaign rallies altogether. It was therefore hard to get a handle on who she was, and what she stood for.

AP reports that over the weekend, Kennedy aides offered written answers to some news outlets about her positions on gay marriage (she supports it) and school vouchers (she opposes them).

(Click here to read The New York Times’s analysis
of Kennedy’s answers to the written questions.)

But the fact that we can’t seem to get to Kennedy directly bothers Ackerman.

"They basically Sarah Palin-ized her," said the congressman who recently compared Kennedy to actress/singer Jennifer Lopez when making the point that a big name doesn’t make a good candidate.

"She has a very famous name and she’s a very attractive candidate. Those are good things in politics. But it’s not an entitlement. You know, one of the things that we have to observe is that DNA, in this business, can take you just so far. You know, Rembrandt was a great artist. His brother Murray, on the other hand, Murray Rembrandt wouldn’t paint a house."

Former Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, D-NY, also seemed to be leaning away from Kennedy, recommending that Gov. David Paterson pick someone already familiar with Congress – a woman, in particular.

"I did put it in a little bit of a support for the six women members. I said I don’t know if any one of them wants it, but I think you should reach out to them and ask them,” Ferraro said.

National Journal has a good piece on how Kennedy’s campaign to convince Paterson to send her to the Senate has pushed gender politics front and center yet again.

Even well known Democrats don’t think Caroline should have this seat!

I’m not advocating that she be given the Senate seat. I was simply pointing out the vast differences between the two women.

Sarah Palin has never done anything that didn’t benefit Sarah Palin, until she does, she will never get my vote.

From 2002 through 2004, Caroline Kennedy worked as director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships for the the New York City Department of Education. The three-day-a week job paid her a salary of $1 and had the goal of raising private money for the New York City public schools. In that capacity, she helped raise more than $65 million for the city’s public schools. She currently serves as one of two vice chairs of the board of directors of The Fund for Public Schools, a public-private partnership founded in 2002 to attract private funding for public schools in New York City. According to The Politico, her children attended “one of Manhattan’s most exclusive private schools.” She has also served on the board of trustees of Concord Academy, which she attended as a child. Kennedy and other members of her family created the Profiles in Courage Award in 1989. The award is given to a public official or officials at the federal, state or local level whose actions best demonstrate the qualities of politically courageous leadership in the spirit of John F. Kennedy’s book, Profiles in Courage. In addition, Kennedy is currently president of the Kennedy Library Foundation. She is also an adviser to the Harvard Institute of Politics, a living memorial to her father. She is a member of the New York and Washington, D.C. bar associations. That at least qualifies her for something besides wearing lipstick and designer clothes.

If Sunny Bono’s wife and other wives have been appointed to finnish out their dead husbands terms of office- why not Caroline Kennedy- the people can decide after two years. Sarah Palin was born into a middle class family- She was working hard to put herself through college. She muddled through. Caroline is an attorney. Has worked - though not always for pay. Is family with the political system. The press is being unfair - insisting that she campaign as if she was a candidate - that is not the usual way these things are done. It is just an appointment. The Republicans want to haven an election to give a republican a chance to get this democratic seat. What we have here is all out class war - listen to the “rich bitch” talk in contrast to “poor” Sarah Palin who scraped by on bread and water. What a crock.!!!!

I saw Caroline with Sharpton(?) talking to the press. In my opinion, this lady is what 51 years of age but I swear it seems like she is a 13 year old getting out of her shell. She graduated with a law degree but she never really practiced law. She wrote books with very general concepts that anyone with a law degree could have written. I’ve talked to a few lawyers and they confirmed this. I read in my home newspaper that she will release her financial information only AFTER she is the senator. There’s a lot of people in New York both Reps and Dems who are very vocal about the special treatment or so-called entitlement that she is seeking. If she did not have the name Kennedy would anyone give her a second glance? How many paid work hours does she have under her belt at age 51? Does she have more working hours than the average college student working his/her way thru college? Gov. Palin comes from a very middle class background. No free rides. She worked, paid her way while earning her degree, got elected into office …. She represents hardworking Americans who were not born with a silver spoon. Gov Palin is real and very true blue American. She is a very strong woman. It is strange that Caroline who I believe wrote a book about “privacy” is trying to maintain that while wanting to be in public office. She wants it both ways and it just seems to be a major contradiction. If she is having a difficult time with that now then how in the world is she going to handle being a senator?! Sheltered little girl lost is what I see in Caroline not a grown strong woman. Just an opinion which I have the right to have one. Thank you.

Just an opinion which I have the right to have one. Thank you. By Tanja Pineda on 12/28/2008 4:08 pm And I have a right to my opinion. My opinion is that you biased toward Sarah Palin just as you accuse others of being biased toward their candidate of choice. One person is not superior to another based on their birth . Caroline was born to priviledge and Sarah was born middle class. That doesn’t make Sarah more american or superior. As I mentioned before people have been appointed before without fanfare. I think her famous name is not serving her well.

Starry. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT AND EDUCATE YOURSELF. I NEVER accuse others of being bias toward their candidate of choice. Do NOT put words in my mouth. I REPEAT do not put words in my mouth. There was however MEDIA BIAS towards Gov. Palin and that has been proven. Gov. Palin earned my respect and MY vote. I love the States a great deal. She represents a true American with a VERY strong work ethic. She earned her name sort of speak. Just like I earned my name Pineda. There is something to be respected for someone who works hard all their life and working their way up. Goal oriented and not relying having a silver spoon. Relying on yourself and that is a beautiful thing. Gov. Palin just like myself is a true feminist. I hope that you took some notes. Thanks!
