Caroline Kennedy Talks to Gov. Paterson About Taking Hillary's Seat

New York Gov. David Paterson has to decide who will take soon-to-be Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. Who does Paterson call? None other than … wOw’s gal Caroline Kennedy. ABC News reports that Gov. Paterson talked to Caroline Kennedy about the possible move:

A Democrat who would know tells ABC News that New York Gov. David Paterson has talked to Caroline Kennedy about taking the seat, which was once held by her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy. It’s not exactly shocking that Paterson would reach out to one of the most highly respected public figures in New York, but this is: Sources say Kennedy is considering it, and has not ruled out coming to Washington to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate.

We see why "Kennedy is considering it." Given Kennedy’s family legacy and their political clout — and all the tragedies she has endured — Caroline has a lot to think about. Is she reluctant to step into Clinton’s shoes? Recently, the famously private Kennedy propelled herself into the public eye as she campaigned for Barack Obama. She handled herself beautifully during these times, and we think she’ll be as great a senator as her uncle Ted.

Whoever Gov. Paterson chooses will have to run in a special election in 2010 to finish out the last two years of Clinton’s term. Kennedy has been a favorite to fill that seat and there have been reports that Kennedy is definitely "in the mix." It helps that Paterson is said to be favoring either a woman or a non-white candidate for the post.

Another dame two women’s groups want to see in Clinton’s senate seat is Rep. Carolyn Maloney.

There are members of the House and hard working State Legislators that should be “promoted” before someone from the private sector gets that Senate seat. And as an upstater, I am hoping that Paterson will appoint someone who understands the needs of NY.. west of the Hudson. Hillary has been working on some important border issues and those need to be kept on the front burner. In all of the press hooplah, there is a tendency to forget that there are regular folk here in NY who lost a Governor and now a Senator during a time of great uncertainty. I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping this will be a pragmatic appointment, not a glamour nod. I respect Caroline a lot. I hope she keeps doing what she’s been doing.

If ‘legislative’ experience were the only measure of fitness then all the inept bureaucrats that have transformed Congress into a moribound institution would be the control point. Thomas Paine was one of the most brilliant leaders this country ever have, he arrived here a failure. And his first writings clairified for early settlers galvinized them into actions, Payne became the best selling author of the 18th C and his “Common Sense” and “Rights of Man” will always stand among the greatest writings. The control for greatness in a President and fitness for Congress should be high intelligence, respect for the Constitution, vision, and ability to conceptualize on a large scale, and to possess the drive and personal clout to make complex things happen. Caroline Kennedy has and has done all of these again and again and within and for some of the key institutions in WDC, NYC and MA.

Carmel etc: …key institutions in WDC, NYC and MA. What key institution in MA has Caroline been involved in? Are you referring to the Kennedy Library? If you are, that is hardly a key institution. Most of the residents of MA have probably not even visited it unless they were taken there on a school field trip. It would seem the people of California have a greater affection for the Kennedys than the people of Massachusetts. That being said, I do think Ted has done good things, and Bobby’s son, Joe, has helped the poor of Massachusetts with home heating expenses.

There seems to be a lot of debate on this board and topic about whether she is “qualified” for the job. That she lacks political experience. Ladies, every Senator, Congressman, Governor or Mayor started out their political career at the starting gates with no experience under their belts. Just an idea and belief that they wanted to give back to their respective communities and hopefully further themselves in politics. When you think of Caroline and all she has done working silently in the background on really important and vital issues, politicians and such, how could anyone argue she lacks the foundation to build a political career upon? If not her, who? Forget her last name, look at her deeds. Base your decision solely on her resume of work. She truly is someone that can and should start a political career because she would be an asset. But then again, I am still reeling over the fact the news is she is really considering this. I just never pictured it from her, she seems so private.

The starting gate would be the US Senate in this case, unlike most. The debate is not over whether she is qualified so much as “the most qualified”. If I base my decision solely on her resume of work - I believe there are others more qualified. Your belief that she is truly someone who can and should start a political career because she would be an asset has no real supporting tenets other than her silent background work? The interesting part of all this for me and why I chose to participate in this way is that every blog I’ve read discussing this today has comments dominated by people who say similar things - “oh, I like her” - “Great news - a return to Camelot” - “she’s smart” - “she and Ted can pave the way” etc. Not very much discussion on what her politics actually might be, what experience she has with legislative bodies, what she might do for NY or any other important aspects we might evaluate in contrast to others who have demonstrated political leadership skills. It is no more or less objectionable that someone who liked and voted for Bush because he seemed like such a down home kind of guy - or likes Al Franken because they think he is funny. It has long been articulated that if candidates aren’t celebrity enough - or pretty enough - they stand little chance of election to a high office no matter how qualified or how astute they really are. I believe this is a sad commentary on the nature of American politics and the American electorate.
