Caroline Kennedy Talks to Gov. Paterson About Taking Hillary's Seat

New York Gov. David Paterson has to decide who will take soon-to-be Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. Who does Paterson call? None other than … wOw’s gal Caroline Kennedy. ABC News reports that Gov. Paterson talked to Caroline Kennedy about the possible move:

A Democrat who would know tells ABC News that New York Gov. David Paterson has talked to Caroline Kennedy about taking the seat, which was once held by her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy. It’s not exactly shocking that Paterson would reach out to one of the most highly respected public figures in New York, but this is: Sources say Kennedy is considering it, and has not ruled out coming to Washington to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate.

We see why "Kennedy is considering it." Given Kennedy’s family legacy and their political clout — and all the tragedies she has endured — Caroline has a lot to think about. Is she reluctant to step into Clinton’s shoes? Recently, the famously private Kennedy propelled herself into the public eye as she campaigned for Barack Obama. She handled herself beautifully during these times, and we think she’ll be as great a senator as her uncle Ted.

Whoever Gov. Paterson chooses will have to run in a special election in 2010 to finish out the last two years of Clinton’s term. Kennedy has been a favorite to fill that seat and there have been reports that Kennedy is definitely "in the mix." It helps that Paterson is said to be favoring either a woman or a non-white candidate for the post.

Another dame two women’s groups want to see in Clinton’s senate seat is Rep. Carolyn Maloney.

It is not Caroline Kennedy’s opinion to which I refer. She may not care if she becomes embroiled in a bitter partisan battle as often occurs in the Senate but I fear there are a great many people in this country who would like to see her stay above the fray… to remain a gracious reminder of her parents and the fact that not all things Kennedyesque end in tragedy. Americans, for the most part, are pleased to know that Caroline lives a full and enriched life ….away from the bitterness that so permeates discourse in our houses of government.

Hello, Bonnie….I have always found “above the fray” a particularly vivid phrase….I would want for everyone to be above the fray if it’s taken to mean not mired in pettiness and worldliness but re-sponsable…”able to respond”…to greater calling…..And, of course, I would wish that she be spared tragedy… I’m thinking that the difficulties besetting us on all sides these days might have been lessened had many more of us not been above the fray….and sort of asleep at the wheel as well…. If there ever was a time to be”in it”…..!

It sounds like Caroline has it if she wants it. I have no doubts she would be a great, Progressive Democratic Senator if she decides to take it. I will be surprised if she takes it though, it doesn’t seem like something she would do… but I would be very happy about it. We can sure use a Progressive Democrat in the Senate.

So many different opinions here, but I am quite curious why there are those who feel that Sarah Palin is quite qualified to be president, yet Carolyn Kennedy is totally unqualified to be a senator? This makes absolutely no sense to me, and probably the reason I am a lapsed Republican.

I’ve been reading everyone’s comments with interest over the weekend. I am still befuddled by the excitement over Caroline Kennedy’s potential nomination to the Senate. While she is well educated and well spoken, she has not displayed any qualifications to hold a senate seat. She did not get engaged during the past eight years when the Republicans took us into a disasterous war, took away rights of citizens and encouraged much of the rest of the world to dislike the US. Now that the Democrats are in power she wants to just pick up the phone and get the job? Has she even run for PTA president? Has she shown how she could hold her own against fierce political rivals? On yesterday’s This Week with George Stepanopoulos they said she was a good candidate because she could raise the $100M it would take to run in 2010 and 2012. Is that the new qualification for public office in the US? Being rich and connected enough to bankroll a big campaign? How disheartening.

Maybe public funding has to become mandatory for both branches of government, executive and legislative, then there would be a level playing field, and a lot of sins would become controllable again. Sins like corruption, media control, undo advantage, etc.

Marjorie, Wouldn’t it be a real breath of fresh air if we had candidates who were picked solely for their competence and qualifications rather than their pocketbook.

Barbara, Yes it would be a breath of fresh air. The money thing has been way out of hand for many years… and now with the internet, it’s totally out of control. My guess is that people will get sick of the results and campaign reform will become an issue again. I’m ready.

I totally disagree. The internet empowers minorities , the poor and well others young and senior. It’s a major reason for the historic Presidential Election result in November 2008. The problem folk have is the power of $1 or $5s. Scary heh. Get use to it. It’s our future. Yeh, Yeh, give me the response about lobbyist and the wealthy sure. Not. So many others got into the game. Surprised a lot of ya. I exult!

Abdromeda: Surprised a lot of ya. Surprise happens only once. The first time. We’ll see if anything good comes from it.
