Caroline Kennedy Talks to Gov. Paterson About Taking Hillary's Seat

New York Gov. David Paterson has to decide who will take soon-to-be Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. Who does Paterson call? None other than … wOw’s gal Caroline Kennedy. ABC News reports that Gov. Paterson talked to Caroline Kennedy about the possible move:

A Democrat who would know tells ABC News that New York Gov. David Paterson has talked to Caroline Kennedy about taking the seat, which was once held by her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy. It’s not exactly shocking that Paterson would reach out to one of the most highly respected public figures in New York, but this is: Sources say Kennedy is considering it, and has not ruled out coming to Washington to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate.

We see why "Kennedy is considering it." Given Kennedy’s family legacy and their political clout — and all the tragedies she has endured — Caroline has a lot to think about. Is she reluctant to step into Clinton’s shoes? Recently, the famously private Kennedy propelled herself into the public eye as she campaigned for Barack Obama. She handled herself beautifully during these times, and we think she’ll be as great a senator as her uncle Ted.

Whoever Gov. Paterson chooses will have to run in a special election in 2010 to finish out the last two years of Clinton’s term. Kennedy has been a favorite to fill that seat and there have been reports that Kennedy is definitely "in the mix." It helps that Paterson is said to be favoring either a woman or a non-white candidate for the post.

Another dame two women’s groups want to see in Clinton’s senate seat is Rep. Carolyn Maloney.

No, what I mean is that Lincoln, along with a bunch of other people, did not have “experience” when they went to Congress. And, he, along with Harry Truman, was totally self made and did not have the advantages of a first class education. Where is it that a person has to have political experience to get into either house of Congress? What about our own Sen. Jim Bunning of Kentucky? Jeez, he got in because he was a baseball champion for the Detroit Tigers. Served two terms as a city councilman before he was elected to the Senate. Why is that okay? And, Caroline Kennedy has spent a lifetime in the political, not out in front, but backstage. I would venture she has a lot more knowledge than a whole lot of Senators who are or have been there. And, I’d much rather see her in the Senate than a Bush(W), a Bunning or, god forbid a Palin.

Served two terms as a city councilman before he was elected to the Senate. Why is that okay?” Because there is a process — that’s what makes this country different from so many other countries around the world. Whether you like who’s elected or not — and the Lord knows I haven’t cared for quite a few — it’s important to have someone who is willing to get in the trenches. I see Caroline Kennedy more like a consultant — short-term projects — I don’t think she’s one for the nitty gritty down and dirty negotiations, as well as the building of alliances. She operates in a rarified world and guards her privacy.

I’m surprised she’d be interested, too. Maybe her thinking would be it’s only four years to hold the seat for HRC if she wanted it after SoS. And the country is in crisis.

Isn’t Ms. Maloney a bit more qualified? Is a name all that is needed for a Senate seat? I have respect for Ms. Kennedy’s public contributions, but I fail to see how they have prepared her for the Senate. Is this just string pulling?

J. Mark, I agree with you. She is very bright and has made plenty of contributions, but I don’t think she should be handed the job/title Senator.

Their name lives on because so many of them have chosen to dedicate their lives to public service and politics.

sibelle: i predict Bamelot will be even shorter! Methinks indeed that the honeymoon could be short. A quote from Barney Frank via David Espo of the AP: “He’s going to have to be more assertive than he’s been,” Frank said of the president-elect. “At a time of great crisis with mortgage foreclosures and autos, he says we only have one president at a time. I’m afraid that overstates the number of presidents we have. He’s got to remedy that situation.”

True Marjorie, we don’t seem to have any right now. It is not Obama’s crisis at this point, it is still Bush who is in office.

Sandbee, Obama has received kudos all around for assembling a great team that will be ready from day one, he can’t just grab hold of the reins with Bush in office. He will be slammed no matter what he does. If he acts forcefully he will be seen as arrogant and over the line, offending the current administration. If he isn’t forceful enough, then he’s sharing the blame, though not in office, for the Bush catastrophe. If our Founding Fathers were alived the Bush administration would have been yanked out of the WH and hung along time ago..as they deserve to be. They are really disgusting and have done nothing but ransack this nation by design.

I so look forward to when Obama takes office, he seems to be so fully prepared. And of course with the state of things now, he needs so desperately to be.
